I drove a '78 Town Car in 1981, Dove gray with matching leather and 1/2 vinyl roof, but it only had a 400 instead of the 460. It truly was a pleasure to drive. That thick pile carpeting just invited everyone to take off their shoes, it was so comfortable. You have a really nice ride. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

I totalled the Oldsmobile, the transmission was dislodged and the radiator looked like aluminium foil. All that happened to mine was a broken headlight and it bent the bumper about 10 degrees down.

I totally agree!! I have a 75 Cadillac Sedan DeVille and had a 74 Lincoln Town Car and the Lincoln was so much better. Quieter and better ride and the 460 was a great motor. The Lincoln was a 'pillared' hardtop which made it a much tighter body. My DeVille's body is a bit 'looser'. The best I get with the Cadillac is 14 mpg and I would consistently get 16 to 17 with the Lincoln. The only problem I had with the Lincoln was those little 'mini vents' malfunctioning. I became an expert on fixing them! The window regulator in those looked like an octopus! I loved the thermometer like speedometer in the Lincoln. Looking again for another Lincoln!

That is correct. The thing is 8.2L. That's absolutely crazy. The ONLY production engine that was ever bigger than that old GM 8.2L is the Dodge Viper's 8.4L v10. Not even the Bugatti Chiron's w16 is bigger than the GM 8.2L (Chiron = 8.0L vs El Dorado 8.2L)

My dad had a 76 regular Eldorado with the 500cid V8. But, it had a bit more power because of the Fuel injection. 215sae net ponies compared to 190 carburetor. Torque was 400, compared to 360. Salesperson said dad would save fuel which was a crock. My dad enjoyed the Xtra power, never the Xtra MPGs.

I have to comment on this review. First off, gorgeous car. The '77 - '79s are my absolute favorites and are what I think of when someone says Lincoln. For a younger guy you seem to have an understanding of what luxury used to mean to people (still does to some, me included). Thank you for not crying about no backup cameras, touch screens, lack of airbags, poor handling, etc... as so many of your peers do. Large, roomy, smoooooooth ride, quiet cabin, soft seats, light touch steering and nice subdued, formal styling and size - exactly what is missing from (so called) luxury cars of today. I'd rather your Lincoln than any Ford GM Chrysler product made today. As far a those previously mentioned safety features, well, people knew how to drive, park, and pay attention to their surroundings and weren't going 40 mph over the speed limit with their faces buried in their cell phones. You get 2 thumbs up for for your Matthew McConaughy commercial - fantastic.

It plugs into your iPhone and you sync the sound with the video when editing. It makes a world of difference with sound quality when you're driving. Also, if you're using iMovie you can turn up the sound of your dialogue so it's normalized with rest of the video.

Horsepower, the rate at which an engine produces torque, is not that important when you have the massive torque of 460 cubic inches. That's why is was critical in those smog-controlled years to buy the biggest engine possible, 460, 455 or 440 depending on brand. They would not get that much less miles per gallon, if any at all, than their smaller 400 and 350 siblings as the smaller engines had to work so hard to move those barges around. A 460 might get two MPG better than a 351 under identical circumstances, but the reserve power was worth it.

way back in the late 70s, my neighbors would bring their over pollution controlled cars to me, I would tear off all the vacuum hoses, and then go tearing around the neighborhood with an extra 50 horsepower after flipping the air cleaner lid, taking off the air pump belt, and adjusting the timing just before it pinged on premium fuel. What a difference an hour worth of work would make! the General Motors Quadrajet 4 Barrel was the most fun, I would loosen up the spring to the air valve secondary, remove the lock out link (that forced you to hold the gas pedal down for several seconds to allow the vacuum to drop), then they would just fly from the flipped air cleaner! Did I mention removing the catalytic converter with a test pipe from Canadian Tire?

My step grandpa who is now 96 yrs old and in good health to this day, was riding in his brother's blue 1976 Lincoln Continental back in the early to mid 1990s, recalls the old Lincolns taking out a then new Chevy blazer that pulled out in front of a gas station, the lincoln had no more damage than a broken headlight and a slightly twisted bumper, after the police settled everything from there his brother dropped grandpa off at home and went home like nothing happened except for a spike in his blood pressure. And grandpa remembers to this day like it was yesterday, and tells myself and the younger generation, you never experienced luxury cars if you didn't grow up in the 1960s and 1970s. Back when Cadillac's and Lincoln's were the gold standard for luxury, not Lexus, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Jaguars and BMW.

I really enjoyed your video! thanks so much for posting. Lincolns and Cadillacs of the sixties and seventies rode better than any new car available today. Nothing as smooth ,quiet , comfortable is available today . (including any Mercedes Rolls or Bentley..I know, I own them). And frankly the handling was not all that bad unless of course, like you indicated you're driving on a Mountain Road at over a hundred miles an hour., but who does that. I'm saddened that all the new cars including Lincoln Cadillac have hard seats & hard suspensions. thanks for your posting of this great video. you have a good personality to go with it.

Your segment hit two landmarks from my not-too-distant youth: the Sunflower State (still here) and the car (my Grandmother had a '79 sedan that we all took to FL and back once). Thanks for the recall--it brought some of the few good memories I had of my childhood. Also, I have to give you kudos on the showmanship. Well done. Now, I noticed the shirt--is that an actual club in the area? Win

You will find with most of cars of this era, that by rolling the stock camshaft ahead 4 degrees or so (using an aftermarket adjustable timing chain set and keeping in mind that the distributor timing will have to be readjusted) will cause the engines to wake up. I did this to my '78 Eldorado 425 with very satisfactory results. The engine seems quite eager now, has a better sounding exhaust note. Dual exhaust also helps and using stock type mufflers and resonators will keep things very sedate.
