The outside A line went slack during collapse and got hooked on the speed bar pulley. The pilot was panicking and did not see it so he kept trying to recover the collapse but it was impossible because he needed to free the right A line. Essentially he landed with one big ear pulled in. Good control all things considered. Lesson for the rest of us to check lines are free after collapses. @2:23 you can see the outside red A line is pulled down and caught on something creating the big ear effect.

Cravats don’t flap: not 100% true but the leading edges dont move around flapping like this … very good point u made. Outer A and outer B are hooked on something

look closely. one of the cables in row A on the right is hooked to something lower down. this collapse could not let go by itself. you could say you had your right ear on and didn't see it

On 1:54 if you pause we can clearly see that the second A line from outside is somehow stuck in the risers, under the C control handle. You just had to undo it.

Well seen Bastien, thanks. Hooked in an apparently useless label furthermore. I'm sure that Bruce G will see this video and improve that hardly predictable issue (Printing instead of sewing for ex). The less there is potential hooks of any kind, the less there is risks.

Thanks for posting this I have studied this paraglider problem for some time as I'm learning to fly. This is the first mention I have seen of a tangled line after a collapse and recovery. There's a saying if it will launch it will fly. If you get some problems off the surface from the start you should be able to fly down and land it. Now a new thing if it'll fly it will land.

this happens quite often. the A-line may even be stuck in the carabiner. so, as you said, you have to look not only above but also down and follow the lines. you can see it several times in your video. happened also to me ;-)

I do agree with the fact a C glider is too high level vs pilot reaction.

That is definitely something that you don’t see every day. I have had lines hook the C handles while ground handling but never while doing maneuvers. This is something all pilots should be aware off!
@tomtom8494
@tomtom8494 3 года назад
Robert himself grabs the right middle A line in the video at 0.08! This creates a one-sided flap / collaps and the A line gets caught somewhere on the harness or on the belt at the pulleys or lower. Did you want to target a one-sided flap (big ear) ?
@nickolaymerkin248
@nickolaymerkin248 3 года назад
This is typical issue of BGD Cure and Base (Base is less prone, because of more thick lines). There is a lifehack how to prevent lines to be catched with the C-steering handles. Just wrap the bottom of the handle with a sticky tape (duct-tape, insulating tape, scotch is less preferred) to flatten the connection of the handle and the main stripe.

I remember this landing, because I was one of the people on the (sunrise) landingspot. We where really wondering what was wrong with you for landing this way. Right before you touched the ground, your wing recovered itself, so it looked a lot like you had been intentionally pulling a big ear on only one side. This video clears up the mystery. :)

well done though brother, you did an amazing job to land as softly as you did with no injuries, so to me that was a perfect landing, not the most ideal, however, you remained calm, worked with what you had, and got to land safely

Not the last time you'll probably land with half a wing, good skill to have. Same thing happened to me at Soboba, I was too low to clear. Glad you figured it out, I saw the A line pretty quickly only cause I've seen videos where the wing wasn't responding correctly and so I have learned to look to ensure all A lines are present and accounted for. But tough to recognize that in the air. I wouldn't sell the wing, but I certainly don't like anything that could hook the A risers on a collapse. That asymmetric really was not something that should have been a big deal, but this became a big deal when the A riser was hooked. If this was active air or a hot LZ it could have ended badly. Find out what it got stuck on and remove it ;)

No offense intended but you should either go back to en-B wing or take a SIV course. At 0:15 , when the right side collapsed, you kept pumping the left brake. The proper procedure is weight shift left , then applied just enough left brake to straighten up the wing. Once the wing is flying straight find out what is wrong without being panic. Also you can do a full stall to clear the stuck lines once you have practiced full stall during SIV course.
@Dreams-and-Castles
@Dreams-and-Castles 6 лет назад
Going back to a B wing would make no difference. This was not because of the rating of the wing. The pilot did well enough to fly the glider straight and land safely. Doing an SIV would also not change what happened.

but in my opinion if he used his eyes properly he would have had recognized what was wrong. i know it is a stressfull situation but as phan said, the glider was flying stabel, then use ur eyes and look what is the problem. it would have no problem to solve the mishap.

I think you should avoid to pull the A from the inside. Keep the arms outside to grasp A.
@lighthunt
@lighthunt 6 лет назад
Hi, do you mean the arm or palm direction? As of the arm, I believe I have pulled from outside, same way I used to do ears. Perhaps you mean pull down with the hand in the same direction I would do ... a facepalm ( :-) ). Please elaborate it on it more, you may have a point...
@GaetanZoritchak
@GaetanZoritchak 6 лет назад
At 0:08 you pull the B (not A) with the thumb down, the C are in front of your arm. I think this is the reason why you can pull the line under and behind the C handle. If you have taken the A (and not the B), with the thumb up (watching you palm), you could not mix the lines with the C handle. This is a video of me during a SIV: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HICB-SapBlM.html. I pull the As with my arms at the outside of all lines.

Glad to see that you saw the problem on the video... it opens really fast after collapses, but of course if lines are clear... once it happen similar to me with a line hooked on the speed hook.... i had a hard time to unhook but it worked at the end.... as you can see, your main mistake probably, is not being calm, so you couldn't see the problem... assymetrics open quite good just by body shifting or letting it turn if you have height enough. Even though, it flies straight as you can see... sorry for this... but you know... sometimes we win, sometimes we learn, and this one, was a good lesson!! All the best and enjoy whatever choice or machine you fly.
@lighthunt
@lighthunt 6 лет назад
Yep, a good lesson for me and hopefully for others too. I don't recall that any instructor would ever told me (but maybe my memory is just so bad) to check lines at risers. Everyone just look up. Lines on Cure are black and thin, not easy to see what's going on if you don't know what to look for. So it's worth to share, and repeat and memorize. This can happen on any wing. This is a new wing for me and for a while I thought, that this is may be a normal behavior. I am glad it isn't ;-)

Hello Robert, very interesting video, I think the answer is in 1.03! In the outside line of A risers catched in a harnes or somewere. What you think? Sory for the language.... Nick
@tomtom8494
@tomtom8494 3 года назад

If you aren´t comfortable with full stall you might have tried a frontstall or even big ears to see if it would release. But in the end... all´s well that ends well.
@axellehamers3064
@axellehamers3064 5 лет назад
But it WAS a big ear ! if you look at this right, there's an A line taken in something down around the right handler. It's nothing but a big ear hold with something else than pilote's hand.

Forget the Stabilo on a big collapse - opposite weight shift and massive, deep pumps with brake on collapsed side - just short of spinning the wing. Otherwise if enough height + pilot skill, a stall will reset things most of the time.
