Steve, you videos are inspirational for me. This is one of the best advices I ever heard to improve my photograph: Don't get a new lens, maybe just get a cafe (coffee). I enjoy your videos, thank you for sharing them.

I’ve just returned from Anglesey, literally yesterday but as it was a holiday with my wife, and dog first and foremost, photography trip second I didn’t really get much really, mainly due to lack of sleep as the place we stayed was great but the pillows were awful, plus I forgot my V Pillow, I have COPD ( under review ) and scarring on my lung so have to sleep sat up most of the time. I shoot Street mainly but I’m wanting to do more and more Landscape Photography so looking to take a drive back down come Autumn. Love your videos Steve, just straight forward and down to earth.

Thanks Brian, I hope the Anglesey trip was the first of many, it's such a great island and often benefits from dry conditions when the rest of Snowdonia is under water!!

Thanks for this one Steve. I "stumbled across you" this morning with your New Brighton video and then saw this one. I was back in Liverpool in February and also did New Brighton and Penmon Point! My sisters thought I was mad, but being out on that point before sun-up was wonderful and I got a couple of keepers. Thanks again - really enjoyed it.

Thanks Paul, we are lucky to have such diverse locations on our doorstep. Penmon is a wonderful place to be at sunrise even though people often don't understand why we do it.

For long exposures on water, I usually don't go past 1second exposures as you can get the lovely lines of the water drawing back. Or then I'll try for like 2mins or more of an exposure to give that misty look.
@SteveONions

Thanks Mark, I think my problem is having too long an exposure so I will try something around a second next time.

Great video but the best time is a clear day with high onshore wind and the tide half in- waves break over the top of the lighthouse! Park into the wind though so the car door doesn't get blown off. Also you will need to clean off the front surface of the lens every few minutes due to salt buildup. I learned by experience! Check the shot in the cafe.

Penmon is a place I visited often in my youth. I spent hours there fishing for mackerel. I had no interest in photography back then.

Hi, I do like long exposures with water. Just wondering what happened to your shot? Did you not like the look of it or did it not expose properly? I enjoy your vids. Thanks
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 7 лет назад
Hi. The long exposure images worked fine technically but they didn't interest me. I have done a few in the past that I liked but I guess it's just not my thing.

Hi Steve. Stumbled across your vids and really enjoy them. I've just purchased a lumix g80 to take up photography for the 2nd time. What's your views on the image quality? Can you get enough pin sharpness in the final product. I've got a 12-60mm lens that I'm going to be using for landscape photography. Any thoughts would be welcome

Bacon makes everything better. I really like your dedication to your shots, the use of the tripod and the remote cable really commits you to your shots. I’ve taken similar shots around the seaside here (New England) but rarely setup the tripod, I just walk around and snap away. The result is way too many shots to have to manage afterwards. I like the idea of slowing down and getting things right before the camera, then in the camera. I am interested in how you do focus stacking in LR. You mentioned this twice. I know I can do panoramas and HDR’s in LR, but never seen focus stacking. Are you selecting the images in LR and sending them to a plug-in or to PS?
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 7 лет назад
I admit that my mention of stacking in LR was an error, I use either PhotoShop or Helicon focus. I often refer to image merging as stacking by mistake :(
@andytheghosthunter
@andytheghosthunter 7 лет назад
With the G80 you can get the camera to focus stack for you can't you? I think you can :) Great vid again!!!!
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 7 лет назад
Hi Andy. It can stack but only in 4K mode so just 8mp sadly.

I find it interesting that you shoot micro 4/3 digitally but then shoot large format film. Is there a reason you don't shoot full frame digital?
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 5 лет назад
Hi Erich. I do use full frame digital sometimes but find micro 43 a better fit with my film cameras. If conditions are suitable I usually use film but on those occasions I can’t I often need to handhold the camera and this is where the micro 43 cameras work better than full frame. I did this on an upcoming video, it simply would not have worked on a full frame digital or any film camera.

Thanks for letting me know your thinking on this. It is always good to get the insight about the process.
@jonmanjeot

I really like the Barnacle image, how many frames did you stack?
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 7 лет назад
It was actually 5 although in reality I think 3 would have been enough. The bottom left of the image if I recall correctly was quite a bit closer to the lens and needed two frames alone to get it all in focus.
@steveh1273
@steveh1273 7 лет назад
Steve, you mentioned focus stacking in Lightroom. I do not have the CC version of Lightroom, does it have capability to blend images for focus stacking now? I have version 6.8 and I am not aware of it. Maybe you export to Helicon or some other app? I enjoy your videos and love those locations. I also think you do a very good job of explaining your photography process and ideas.
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 7 лет назад
Hi Steve. I confess that I should have said Photoshop was used for the stacking. I select all the images in Lightroom then open as layers in photoshop. It's just a couple of quick merge options then to give me a good result. I used to use Helicon but I do like the tight coupling of the Adobe products and anything that saves time in editing is a big plus for me. Glad you enjoy the videos too as I want them to be easy to watch as well as showing what each location has to offer. Truth be told I sometimes enjoy the video making more than the stills - especially when the weather is less than ideal.
