Ryten is a hard hike in the Lofoten Islands of Norway. Lofoten is known for landscape photography and hiking. From Ryten you will get a gorgeous view over Kvalvika Beach and the surrounding mountains. In this video, I'll show you where to park, go, and I share my epic landscape photography along the way when I hike to the top of this 543-meter tall mountain. Enjoy the video!

The only thing that makes a hard hike harder is vlogging it! Run up hill, place camera, run down hill, walking up, pick up camera....repeat, and repeat.... lol Anyway, what an amazing location. You do such a good job of selling these locations to photographers! 👍

Fantastic video Mads. I’ve only visited Lofoten once so far. It was winter 2019 and under 2 metres of snow, so quiet a challenge photographically. It’s interesting so look at the landscape in autumn. Did you visit in September?

I am new to photograph and have spent the last week trying to find the ideal camera for me, initial looking at the Nikon D5600 but this is not capable of 4k videos. It will be mainly for pictures but will be nice to have 4k, i am planning on buying a mavic mini and gopro 7 black in a couple of months to give video making a go, would like to get some milky way shots. Any suggestions for under $1000 that will still be relevant in a year or two years and minimum 20MP? A6400, x-t30 and for some reason i am interested in the nikon D5600.

Thanks for the great video! Could not make the hike last summer as my daughter and #1 travel buddy sprang her ankle just before our trip so had to stick to roadside locations. Good to know about the new drone ban so that I'm not overly disappointed if I'll do the hike this summer. Luckily got the drone footage from 2016, but would have loved to get some more... AND the drone would have helped in getting more interesting shots as I think I need to skip most of the ridges you visited as I'm so terribly afraid of heights! :)

Great video. What is your interval shooting settings? Start time, Interval and AE Tracking sens ? I guess with this kind of shoot, you are using A priority mode. In this case, do u use set up ISO on AUTO mode or just fixed and camera only change the shutter speed. p.s. have you ever considered come to Poland ? :D
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 4 года назад
It always differs from location to location what the interval and shooting start time is. You'll have to figure that out yourself on location. I shoot in aperture priority, pretty sure I mentioned that, and lock down the ISO. No reason to have it increase. Nope, Poland is not really on my radar ;)

The rocks look different from the Faroes because they are - in the Faroes they're predominantly dark basalt but in Lofoten they're mainly a mixture of granite and gneiss, so lighter in colour with lots of specular reflections. Now I have to go watch your earlier videos from there!

Thanks for sharing this inspirational video, Mads, it is great as usual. I wonder though, you being up there and the sun going down, how risky is it to have to descend in the dark, when you want to photograph the sunset from the top of some steep mountain? And how do you handle changing lenses outside, and (not referring to this particular video) especially in bad weather conditions, if you are out there?
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 4 года назад
This particular hike wasn't too bad, it wasn't all dark when I returned but always bring a headtorch. In regard to changing lenses in bad weather it requires a little finesse, but generally turn the parts you can't wipe off away from the incoming rain.

My invite must have been lost in the mail. Lol. Great use of leading lines in the foreground of the 2nd photo. Norway is beautiful, I visited the south a couple years ago. I will definitely make it back again someday to visit this area. Did you do any training before you went? I wasn’t ready for the steps at trolls tongue but pushed through. That’s one thing to definitely prepare for is hiking those mountains. Can’t wait for more epic footage 🙌🏻

Not much training, but surely went for some walks. I'm not getting younger that's for sure :P

Great video, great location. Will add to my bucket list, only problem is “why is it on the other side of the world!” 🙂😉 (and also my level of fitness 🤔) 🙂 Derek. Sydney 👍

Hehe, I bet Australia makes everything seem far away! You might not be able to make this hike, but there are plenty of roadside locations in Lofoten.

EPIC footage !!! Your enthusiasm is contagious ! When i was there there was a lot of snow and it was not recommended to go up. Maybe i go back in the spring next year. Looking forward to you upcoming videos !

Yeah, with a lot of snow it gets dodgy!

I have to laugh. Your "it is epic" and Nigel's "It doesn't get any better than this' should be copyrighted!!!! Thanks for the video. Gorgeous place. Hopefully it won't be soon overrun by tourist photographers and make the site untenable for real photography. Fortunately there is a charge and the Norwegians can always increase the costs to throttle the flow if he gets too high.

I hardly think this will ever be "overrun" by photographers, it is already a pretty popular hiking destination but I didn't have any problems getting my photos. Only on the first photos a group of Asian woman saw what I was doing and copied that with their phones ;)

Stunning pictures and footage from a stunning location, Mads. I was up there a few years ago, but only made it to the beach. My ex and I thought that hiking all the way to the top of Ryten seemed a bit strenuous. And by the looks of it, we were right 🙂 I'm travelling to your neck of the woods, so to speak, in early May. Look forward to seeing Risskov, if I remember correctly. The colours are of course better in the autumn, but I can use it as a scouting trip.
