Landscape Photography in Iceland | Long Exposure Settings to Capture Beautiful Waterfalls

In this landscape photography vlog, I take a trip to one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland, if not the world, Skogafoss in the south of the country.
To avoid the crowds and get the best light, I arrive at Skogafoss around 10:00 at night. Even at that time of the day there are still about 30 cars in the carpark and around 40 people exploring the base of the waterfall. So I took a walk up the stars to the right of the waterfall to a platform where you get spectacular views of the area from above the waterfall.
You aren’t allow to fly drones in the area, but with stunning views from the platform, I didn’t need to get the drone out. After a couple of attempts to set up only to be interrupted by rain, the weather held off long enough to set the camera up for my first shot.
I tried out the polariser and ended up keeping it on the Nikon 24-70mm lens as it was giving me a nice effect cutting out the glare on the surface of the water and making the rocks darker. I was going to use the Lee Filter 6 stop, Little Stopper but the reduced light from the clouds and the f-stop of 11 that I was using gave me a shutter speed of 2.5 secs. This was perfect as it was taking around 2.5 secs for the water to fall from the top to the bottom of the waterfall. This was going to give me the silky smooth effect on the waterfall that I wanted.
After capturing that first shot, I explored the area a little more to find a few other composition of this gorgeous area.

What a fantastic way to round off your series of films from Iceland. A really atmospheric video that made me feel like I was right there with you. I know it is a well shot location but I simply wouldn't be bothered. Those beautiful images are now in your portfolio forever to be cherished. Work to be proud of. Thanks for sharing.

Could you please do a video on your editing process if you don't mind sharing it. I have photos from Iceland too but I can't figure out a good way to edit them as the colour are quite muted. You seem to get a lot of vibrant colour in your photos without making them look edited much. Thanks!

Aaah Skogafoss. What a beauty... I loved that place. That hike seems like a bit intense (i never went up there). You got the place to yourself, which is a blessing as it can become very overwhelming with tourists. I love the compositions and the final results. Thanks for sharing your experience and taking us to the mighty waterfall. Well presented.

Hi Andrew, thank you for your wonderful videos, after moving from the country to Perth I found myself struggling to get out and capture some of Perth's beautiful landscapes and seascapes. I turned to RU-vid and your awesome video's came up, in a word inspirational, liked, subscribed and ticked the bell

Very well done Andrew... I see you are still in Iceland! It appears you moved in a little closer on the f/9 shot after doing the f/11 a tad farther away. I can't make up my mind which one I like better...I decided I like them both! Working with the conditions you had, nice job catching the shape of the water before it gets too milky. Thank you, Bill Farr...

Great videos, Andrew. I’ll be there next week and have been watching your series on Iceland with much enthusiasm. They’ve been super educational and full of tips where to go. I shoot mostly 35mm film with an M7 and wondering if I should take that with me or leave at home.

Your inspirational work just gets better and better Andy and this vlog is no exception mate.👍 Your production is becoming really polished, the drone work is superb especially considering you’ve not had it long, it really adds something to your videos but you don’t overdo it as some seem to. The images of Skogafoss are stunning mate, I particularly like the close up, almost abstract one but the landscape images of the waterfall are just as good. As in other vlogs of yours, I find the dialogue fascinating and particularly like that you take the viewer into the location and don’t just use the cliché views. I assume you’re back in Australia now mate, I hope the homeward journey went smoothly. I look forward to seeing how your local based vlogs have changed now you’ve had this amazing trip, I bet it will take you a while to settle back in though. Take care mate and stay safe.🍀👌

Great video as always Andrew. I wonder if the 200-400mm lens would be better in a situation where you would have the issue with blowing mist? I've seen a couple of shots of a similar waterfall with a person standing close to the waterfall as a point of interest. Do you think standing further off and zooming in would work?

Nice Video as always, I was 2 months ago in Iceland as well. Your videos brings up a lot of nice memories. In regards to waterfalls what I experienced there, was missing of my pictures with fast shutter speed in many cases. When now I am looking back to the pictures slow shutter speed and silky waterfall reduces a bit the feeling of how big the waterfalls were.

Did you consider removing the railing at the viewing platform on the shot from the base of the falls? I find my eye going right to it as it is not natural and seems out of place ..

Great shots, but honestly, I think that with these magnificent waterfalls it is sometimes better to use a slightly faster shutter speed at several 1/10s of a second to show the structure in the falling water which will very well emphasize the sheer power of the waterfall.

Amazing photos. Great vlog. What do u think about not using a polarizer on the 24mm shots? I feel like the glare of that shallow water on the lower left corner of the photo would help accentuate that leading line towards the water fall. Just food for thought.
