Landscape Photography - Mountain and Gorge Composition and Settings in Scotland

In this Landscape Photography vlog, I leave the Lake District and travelled north into Scotland, through Glasgow to a little known gorge called Finnich Glen. I climb down into the gorge to be greeted by the most spectacular green covered rock walls with a deep red river running inside.
It was busy with people (because of school holidays), but I managed to find a spot on my own. As I set up for my shot, it started to rain so I placed a shower cap over the camera and lens to protect the front from water drops (a great trick if using a filter mount and the lens cap won’t go on).
I found a composition and played around with different focal lengths.
Once I captured my image of the gorge, I travelled further north and reached Glenceo where I hiked a hill to get a good vantage point of the Buachaille, a famous mountain in Scotland for landscape photography.
Here I need to use polarisers to cut down glare and ND Filters and reduce the light in the sky. Thi allowed me to increased the exposure and capture the gorgeous detail in the side of the mountain.
I ended up bracketing a few shots to ensure I captured as much detail as possible.
This video is dedicated to my Grandfather (Andrew Marr) who was born in Scotland and migrated out to Australia when he was a young boy…never to return!

Of all the landscape Vblogers you are the one that never fails to teach me. I think each of the formats has merit with the portrait leading your eye to the green walls, the landscape is my least favorite as I don't see the composition going from side to side, and the square is my choice in that it balances the lovely water with the walls best and for me brings my eye into the image with the least effort. Excellent!

I think the square format is best. Oh, I enjoyed hearing about grandfather and your interest in in him. My roots go deep in England and Scotland, early 1600's, even though I am an American. I always enjoy seeing where you take us on your video photo treks it's an excellent way for me to escape for a few minutes, thank you. Also, knowing your location setup and camera settings are informative. The one thing we don't lack here in Idaho are mountains and rivers, however, we can't compete with the greenery in your treks it's fantastic.

Hi Andrew. I love the personal family connection with Scotland you shared in this one. Great story. I really can't decide b/t the 3 formats from the gorge. The portrait really shows the height of the walls whereas the other two emphasize more of the beautiful green on the walls. I think I prefer 1:1 over the landscape, but you can't go wrong with any of the three. All would depend on the dimensions of the space in which you wanted to hang your print! I love this UK trip and am quite jealous of your adventures. Someday...
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 7 лет назад
Thanks mate, so glad you enjoy this one. Your right, all three crops showcase the scene is different ways. I like that about some images. Love your photos Andrew, love watching your videos! I was in Glencoe 2 years ago whilst visiting my daughter in Edinburgh and I agree, the countryside is so unque. Mountains just rise up out of the plains and their peaks are just about in the clouds. How I would have loved to drive myself and explore but I was on a coach tour to Loch Ness.

Thank you so much Vivien, that's very kind of you! The landscapes in Scotland were so impressive. I wish I had more time to explore. I'll just have to organise another trip back there someday! :)

I there are very few images I like in portrait, but for some reason I love it for the gorge. The extreme ratio shows off why gorges are gorgeous! It demands attention in that form. Also, I like to imagine the possibilities for display; it will stand out among other images in this portrait orientation.

I like the landscape crop actually. The walls really give a sense of depth to the image. p.s. another great video. I really love your format how you explain everything while on location, really good to see a photographer in his element just talking about his thoughts and ideas for the scene in front of him.

I can tell it was a very special and emotive experience for you and it certainly comes across in your presentation. well done

Likewise my grandfather emigrated from Loch Fyne area to NZ about the same time as yours. Had my first visit to Glencoe last Sept. And was blown away by its grandeur. Liked your landscape shots, captured the grandeur the best IMO.
