Join me on a quiet landscape photography excursion to a lovely hidden location on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. If you enjoy this video please throw a thumbs up my way and consider subscribing goo.gl/hP8Sqe
Unfortunately Kirk Ebnterprises no longer make the lens caps but if they introduce them again or I find another source I'll post a link here.
Some of the topics covered in this vlog include my use of a new polarising filter from Breakthrough Photography that also incorporates a 3 stop ND filter. I also cover some of my thoughts on composition and the new focus stacking (Focus Shift Shooting) feature found on the Nikon D850
Interested in joining me on a photo adventure in 2018? I have three trips currently listed, Vancouver Island, Tonquin Valley and The Talon.
More details about each tour can be found at www.quietlightphotoadventures.com
Breakthrough Photography have been very kind in supporting my photography and lucky for me Breakthrough make some of the best filters currently on the market. For more info be sure to check out Breakthrough at goo.gl/wCvJRi
About the Images in viewing order. Small prints from this video at reasonable prices are available here

More proof that size doesn't matter with waterfalls. My favorite is only about 5 feet. Great eye putting together the composition with the curving mossy branches framing the single falls. Got serious envy for that shot.

Excellent, thank you! I must admit that the videos really help to put each of the images into context and perhaps give viewers some insight into what is involved in taking nature images. I do think that RU-vid is a wonderful way to add another dimension to the whole process. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching, much appreciated.

Good morning Adam. I am sure this will be the most relaxing 19 minutes of my day. The videography was particularly special, in particular reversing the flow of the waterfall and superimposing the close up of the moving bubbles over the lower fall still. I have used the D850's low gain ISO32 with some good success to get a little more out of an ND and am using that setting more often than not. Perhaps is my imagination but I like the image quality at that setting better than ISO64 as well. I watch, enjoy and learn. Thanks for sharing!

Waterfalls are such great subjects to photograph, and rivers and general. I've found that my favorite subjects to shoot involve some sort of running white water. Those floating bubbles really added to the images. I think my favorite was the shot looking through the mossy branches; they framed the waterfall very nicely. I really like the methodical approach to these vlogs. It seems like each one is really well done and thought out even when you're moving around and taking multiple shots. I'd like to try to make my videos more like this and I think the since I'm gonna be shooting large format in my next local shoot it might help out with slowing down my videos. Enjoyed the vlog as always!
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Large format! you'll love it, or hate it haha. Large format is an excellent way to learn about photography and composition. There is a learning curve and it can be a bit frustrating but stick with it Nick it's very satisfying to see those big 4x5 images on a light table. You're doing very well with your vlogs Nick. I'm finding the best approach is to just be yourself. It's been a great learning curve for me as well.

The in camera multiple shots capability changing the focus point is a nice feature in the D850 for focus stacking in post a little later on, very nice feature... So the camera gave you 10 exp. on image 2 for FS in PS, a real work saver for sure. The mossy limb as the foreground subject above the waterfall is a very well composed image Adam... Image 1 is a beauty as well, I like how you teased me with the video before eventually showing the final very well composed image, those swirls came out real nice at 5 secs. @ f/16, all this done with a dark 3 stop thread in cpl... The final image is pure magic! I really like all of them but I would have to lean towards image #2 as my personal favorite. Thanks Adam, Bill Farr... :-)

Another excellent vlog Adam and another beautiful location too. The b roll footage is, again, right out of the top drawer, I thought the reverse water was a stroke of genius! The images you made are superb, particularly the focus stacked picture, the D850 has some amazing features and I can see why it’s been so well received. When are you expecting the first real dump of this seasons snow, I bet you can’t wait to get out and work with it can you? Take care and look after yourself.🍀👌
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thanks again, Andy! Whistler just received lots of snow although the local mountains have just a sprinkle. It's hard to say as the temps on the local mountains always hover at around the freezing level. The temps change from day to day, one day it may dump snow and then rain the next. Lasy year was exceptional, this year is anyones guess. I am ready though.
@andykeeble1

Adam Gibbs given that you are originally from the UK, where we don’t get the same amounts of snow, has the novelty worn off for you or is it something that is always a welcome change?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
I really enjoy winter here, although Vancouver and Vancouver Island have weather very similar to the UK, wet! with some exceptions. I really enjoy the snow although I must admit that the wet winters and dark days can be a real drag, so when spring does arrive I'm ready for the change. It's those days when we have lovely snow in the mountains and stable weather that I really enjoy, especially in the spring when you can ski in shorts, just fantastic.

Adam Gibbs I must admit I feel pangs if envy when I see your vlogs! Not just the scenery but also the snow, it looks like a fabulous place to live and explore. Take care on your adventures please mate!🍀🍀🍀

Vancouver Island is a special place. I really liked it as I were there in 2015 but we had not so much time planned for Vancouver Island. Failure!

Just too many places and not enough time Jurgen! haha. Vancouver Island is a little tricky to explore as much of the west coast is still quite wild. Lots of logging roads though. Perhaps you'll get to visit again some day?

Adam Gibbs for sure, love the northern regions no matter in northern america or europe. But it’s a question of time as always. But I‘m planning, as always 😁

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, very enjoyable as always. I love your processing of those greens in the moss with a soft-ish blur which loans itself very well. Perhaps you may consider showing us how you process your images. I know that you use photoshop. However, I only use Lightroom. But it would be great to see the Master of Photography do it!

I always appreciate your talk about how you approach creating an image. In this vlog, I was also interested on your use of screw in filters, an alternative that can be useful depending upon what you are shooting. And, I was surprised about the feature of the D850 to aid in the capture of focused stacked images. That is really handy and something I look forward to using. The D850 is my plans for getting one in the coming months.
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thanks, Glen! putting the videos together is actually quite helpful to me as well as it makes me think about the composition and the reasons behind the way I have set things up, so it works well both ways :-) For my purposes, the screw on filters work great, especially if I'm hiking into an area and concerned about weight. I also have some 100mm filters that I'll be trying out in the future but of course, they need a holder, so more weight. The focus shift feature on the D850 is a great idea, not sure if I explained it correctly but it works like a charm. I'll be trying it out a bit more in the future. Thanks again.

Thanks for taking us along on the hike Adam! That's great to see that the D850 has the ability to shoot multiple shots and change the focus so you can focus stack. I've been wondering why that hasn't been included on previous cameras. Were you using a slider for some of those shots, or were you handholding the drone? Very impressive as always.
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
No problem Ben, thanks for watching! Yeah, I thought that was a pretty cool feature. I'm not really big into the focus stacking but this makes the whole process very easy. I did use a slider, cool to use but a pain to carry as I am sure you know. I purchased the cheapest one I could find, it works, haha. Mind you those new packable sliders from Rhino look really nice. Thanks again!

Interesting to see this video after just watching your latest video of the same area, not just to see the difference in the photographs but also the video itself. BTW, I really liked your conversation with Gavin and Paul, I've been struggling with my channel and hearing you guys verbalize some of the same things I'm experiencing gave me a shot of enthusiasm to keep plugging away at it ...one last thing, I think the reason there are more "English" speaking guys making videos is because your accents just sounds SO MUCH better than our American ones ;)

Great video Adam. Love the waterfall with the mossy limbs framing everything. How are you liking the mammut pack for all your camera gear?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thanks, Matt! The pack is working out pretty good. I'll be talking about it a bit more in the future but so far it has proved to be a nice replacement for the F-Stop bag. The initial reason for my purchasing the Mammut pack was that it is half the price of the F-Stop Tilopa, same size and in my opinion, better made. We'll see how it holds up but I am confident that it will do well as it is an alpine pack made for climbers.

Wonderful compositions and great to see some images using the new x4 CPL dark. Mine is on backorder. A question, would you get satisfactory focus in the framed branch waterfall image using hyperfocal distance control? I have used hyperfocal and at times get good results and other times not so much.
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thank you, Gary! It was very handy to have the darker polarizer and I can see myself using it more than the regular circular polarizer. As for using the hyperfocal distance, In this case, no, the branch was just too close. To be honest I have rarely used focus stacking and in the past relied more on stopping down and using the hyperfocal distance. However, in this case, I had to stack images otherwise I would have lost focus in the foreground or background. I must admit that in general scenarios focus stacking is very easy to achieve and the feature on the D850 just makes it even easier again. It's too bad that the lens manufacturers don't put the hyperfocal distances on the lenses anymore they worked great, especially with prime lenses.

You had to crawl for the camera four times to get that one sequence. Sacrificing for your art! More brilliant images sir! You have to love the development of technology in these cameras. I shoot with a Nikon D810 and a Sonya7R II. The Nikon is on it's last legs as I use it for wildlife photography and the exposure count is astronomical. Now comes the D850 and the a7R III. What is a boy to do!?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Unfortunately (for me) haha it would seem that the more awkward shots are the ones that viewers enjoy the most, haha. I actually crawled under the log six times as I didn't think about the shot until I had already crawled through once. All good fun. Lucky you! at least that way you don't have to decide whether to go for another DSLR or mirrorless, just go for both, haha. Good planning. I can't speak for the Sony but the D850 is a really great camera, best Nikon I have owned for sure. Thanks, James!

I thought you did a good job in finding a composition that complimented the swirling bubbles. The editing is excellent. Did you slightly de-saturate the back ground? I use NiSi drop in filters (I like the cost and they don't create a colour cast) but really like the idea of a ND built in with the polarizer. The issue I have with my screw on polarizers (Promaster) is they have very few threads and if you adjust the polarizer the wrong way, you can actually spin off the filter while shooting. How are the Breakthrough filters for this? Any colour cast?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thanks, Douglas! Yes, I did desaturate the colours in these images. I haven't had a problem with the filters coming off as they do have an outer ring that is slightly larger so that when you turn the filter the whole thing doesn't turn just the outer ring if that makes sense? They are quite thin so getting them on can be a bit tricky but overall they are really decent filters without any colour shifts whatsoever.

Loved the last two images. D0 you slightly desaturate the colours in post processing to give that matte look?
@QuietLightPhoto

Lately, I have been yes. I'm rebelling against all of the oversaturated images that I see online from my fellow photographers, haha. Seriously though I do tend to enjoy the less saturated shots.

Your videos are well made and it shows that you put a lot of effort into them. Just thought you might have missed this in this one and I would guess that this would be easiest fixed by just adjusting the volume in the video editor.
