This week we discuss LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY seascape and the mistakes that people make while doing photography at the coast. I also give a few tips that i use for my seascape photography. While visiting the isle of Harris and Lewis for a landscape photography workshop we check out some of the coastline that we will be visiting over the coming week as well as discussing seascape photography and what i look for in my compositions.

Paul watching you soaking it all in (literally) brought back my memories from the very same location. Good times. To answer your question: I prefer the 2 Sec. exposure than the longer exposure - in both those last two photos. There is so much energy moving around there and in your photo, the highlights of the tracks of the waves and water express that well. In the soft serene long exposure those are replaced with hues of colour, beautiful. I'd go back and take long exposures during the Blue Hour which is the most serene time of day. That's my opinion anyway XD

Really fabulous images and very good advice about working with the sea. There is so much more to pay attention to than when trying to capture a landscape that doesn't move and it is so easy to get caught up in the moment. Although I think that the 240 sec exposure is beautifully ethereal, if I have to choose, I prefer the 2 second one. It maintains the form and sense movement of those mesmerising waves, as well as the shape of the clouds, which are rather special. Thank you for an entertaining and information vidio.

Great video, Paul. I like both images, but prefer the 240 second one. Not only is the look the water takes on interesting, the streaking of the clouds really add to the image.

Great video as always and great set of photos. Especially liked the second image and also the shorter shutter speed on the last image I just prefer the more textured look you get on shorter shutter speeds than the smoothed out longer shutter speeds. Great videos as always I love that you take time to explain your thoughts behind what you like about your compositions. 👍📷👍

My tripod was blown over by a sudden gust of wind at Elgol back in February. I had walked away from my tripod to my bag which was only about 3 or 4 yards behind me and also to help someone in our group. Luckily the camera suffered minor scuffs and the rear screen wasn’t damaged. It was a light tripod and was great for carrying up hills and had a surprisingly good height when fully extended but in the March I sold my tripod and bought the Kingjoy C85 which I’m blown away with. It’s twice as heavy as my previous one and has a wider base when the legs are extended.

Definitely worth getting the heavier tripod for sure makes such a difference 😁✌️

A beautiful scene Paul. I like the faster shutter speeds when it comes to seascapes. The 2.5 second one is far more pleasing to my eye, in fact i’d like to have seen it even faster, maybe 0.5 but that’s just me. The 240 second version does nothing for me I’m afraid.

My top tip is when shooting seascapes, when you throw your bag over your shoulder, make sure it is zipped up! I had a full bag of kit go scrambles one time at Robinhoods Bay, much to all the dog walkers amusement! 😅

Paul - I prefer the water in the 2.5 second image but there is something about those super long sky exposures that I love too - and the clouds were moving very quickly that day! So I'd maybe try the long exposure sky and the shorter exposure water?
@PaulthomsonphotographyUk
@PaulthomsonphotographyUk Год назад
Thanks James that’s the beauty of taking lots of different exposures you can mix and match the elements you like 😃✌️
@JamesParkerPhotography
@JamesParkerPhotography Год назад
@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk - Exactly. I always teach to try lots of shutter speeds when it comes to water and sky as you never know which one you'll like best when you sit down to review. And, like you said, you can always mix and match to create something unique. Hope your workshop is awesome!

I live a thousand miles from the nearest coast but I always enjoy seeing coastal photos and videos. When I do get to the ocean I'll try to keep your tips in mind. I prefer the 2.5 exposure as it has better detail and looks more realistic to me. Thanks.

Great video Paul! I shoot a lot of seascapes here on the east coast of Canada. Everything you say about being on the rocks and aware of your surroundings - is so true! It's very easy to get distracted at the beauty and lose track of what you're doing or where you're standing. Love the images - keep up the great work!
