Introducing... The Landscape Material! Setting up a landscape can be a scary endeavour, and rightfully so - Landscapes will end up being the most complex material in your project since you need it to contain so many different layers to allow for artistic freedom when creating your game world.
Today we cover the basics of setting up a Landscape, the benefits of using Landscape Layer Blends, the different blend modes and their uses, and much more!
This is the introductory video to landscapes and will serve as a basis for the upcoming videos in the Landscape Miniseries. Hope you enjoy!
Note: You can ignore the node hiding behind the Texture Samples - it's a Prismatica-specific thing, but just imagine we're pulling a pin out of the RGB channel

Really nice tutorial, will be sharing it for everyone that needs to start with landscapes materials :), also really nice explanations on the types of blends, I find that there is not enough clear info about the types of blends out there in a clear and concise form.

So how do we get textures Like blue channel is height and rgb is normal?
@PrismaticaDev
@PrismaticaDev 3 года назад
You can bake them in-engine, although for most cases you can put a Height texture into the Alpha of your BaseColour texture. The only reason I have mine in the B channel of the Normal Map is because I don't use any BaseColour textures in my game so it saves me an unnecessary texture sample :)

Hey Prismatica, can you do a custom blend mask tutorial for this landscape series?
@abimeutube
@abimeutube 3 года назад
@PrismaticaDev. The "BlueStuff" is its own independent layer. Is it independent because you used "LB Weight Blended" in the material graph or is it because you chose "Non Weight Blended" while creating the LayerInfo? Before I forget, your tutorials are good. I'm happy to see that your videos only cover what the title of the video says, and you don't digress much. *Edited once to correct typo.*
@PrismaticaDev

@@PrismaticaDev Appreciate the quick response :). As a follow up, what happens (in other words, what's the use of) if I choose "Alpha Blend" and then choose "Non weight blended" layer info? Or "Weight Blended Layer Info" with Height or Weight blend in the material?

This just plainly does not work 1 for 1 with UE5. Frequent "Physical landscape needs to be rebuilt" messaging, not to mention when you cut at 3:38, you have nodes doubled up over your Texture sample nodes that are connected, and don't bother to explain what they are. Normals don't appear back in the main project view after connecting at that step, and reopening the project shows there's no light in the landscape and nothing appears. Sad that so many people doing these tutorials do this kind of thing.
@PrismaticaDev
@PrismaticaDev 2 года назад
Hi Max - try Build > Build All Landscape to solve your landscape rebuild issues. The nodes that are doubled up at 3:38 are hidden for a reason, because my project uses a different method of packing textures together and that hidden node is there to separate the normals from the heightmap - from that point onwards it's exactly like normal. I'm not sure why you're experiencing glitches with the lighting, but I would recommend using the WorldNormal buffer viewmode to try and isolate what the issue is. I'm sorry that you find it "sad" that a tutorial I posted 1.5 years ago, free of charge and made in my own time on a different engine version is causing you issues. This is the first time that someone has run in to those issues with this tutorial, so I'm inclined to think it's something within your project or build of the engine.
@maxwolford6299
@maxwolford6299 2 года назад
@@PrismaticaDev Thanks for the suggestion. I actually attempted using the Build All Landscapes before asking for help in multiple forums and groups including your own. I apologize for the frustration, it wasn't aimed at you personally and I should have just not spoken up. I am appreciative of your content - I am a subscriber and have enjoyed many of your videos, as well as watching discussions in your Discord. Watching many tutorials and even paid courses to scrutinize every detail to make sure nothing is missed, there are often places where instructors will cut between screens to reduce time or omit explanation entirely for some actions - which I just assumed was what happened here. I'll try your suggestion, apologies again.
