Landyachtz Tugboat / Dinghy cruiser boards Comparison

I present the Landyachtz Tugboat thorough review. I primarily compare it to its little brother the dinghy. The dinghy was perfect in my opinion so when Landyachtz Team Manager Billy "Bones" Meiners gave me the opportunity to test out the Tugboat I couldnt resist. its a bit larger in every way but still behaves in the same agile manne.

These boards are great alternatives to step up from penny boards or nickel boards. They have much more grip and the decks don't flex so you can ride harder.

I love these reviews! I'm learning things I may have never known like the bearings getting better as they start breaking in. Not gonna lie, I held a brand new Landyachtz in my hands and thought the bearings were bad because they weren't spinning like you said. Saved me some cash!
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 6 лет назад
FrostyAvenger you're welcome and I'm glad it helped. Actually when I brought my first dingy I realize who ever assembled it tighten the bolts too much on three of the wheels. Backing the nut off slightly made the wheels turn freely. It's always good to go over the bolts when you buy a skateboard or even a bicycle

Nice review Ray, hope you do more. The Landyachtz videos are great fun to watch and make for excellent marketing. But your videos speak to me a lot more to me as it makes things so much more accessible and realistic. Everyone has their own situation and needs and for me, considerably older than you, 5'11" 215lbs, skateboarding is a blast from the past that I am rekindling with my 13 year old daughter. I've just ordered a Landyachtz Dugout as I think the longer wheelbase will offer me extra stability. My daughter is going to make her decision once we've tried the Dugout. Needless to say we strongly encourage your to make more videos as they're informative, relatable and easy to listen to, great job!
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 4 года назад
Hey David I really appreciate that man because yes the landyachtz videos are very fun but I can't do tricks or many of the maneuvers those pros are doing so sometimes I feel left out also. I say it all the time that this is a photography channel but my 2 skateboard videos or more popular than anything else. I really would like to start a skate channel but I just don't have enough gear 2 review. Hey man skating with your daughter is a great idea and realistically it's good to have different types of boards for whatever mood your in. I have three different ones but 80% of the time I grab the dinghy. let me know how it goes when you get it and thanks for taking the time to comment. By the way you probably already saw my penny nickel verse dinghy
@davidandhometech
@davidandhometech 4 года назад
@@Raychristofer Hi Ray, yes I also saw the Dinghy vs Penny Board reviews. We actually have a Penny 22" board, it's a bit of a toy but my daughter uses it to tick-tack through the kitchen and living room. My daughter wants to try riding the Dugout first (hoping to receive in 10 days) and will then go from there. She is also enamored with the Carver setup which is quite a different board. This may be a 'mean' question as I reckon you 'would if you could', but have you considered reviewing a Carver board with it's surf like ride? Maybe the foks at Carver Skateboards and Landyachtz would be willing to send you a board to review. As you can see from all the comments to your 2 videos, there are a lot of folks keen to see your take!
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 4 года назад
@@davidandhometech hey you know I had a chance to try the Carver board once. It reminds me of a RipStik. Raychristofer Hi Ray! I currently own the Dinghy and I love it. But I'm a big guy too and I'd like to switch to the Tugboat to have a little bit more room for my feet. On the other side I'd really like to keep the bigger wheels.... I like riding a looser setup, so wheelbite could be a problem for me with the Tugboat. Do you think it would be overkill in terms of riding height if I added some spacers, to make room for bigger wheels and looser trucks?
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 6 лет назад
deki mat Deki I had the same problem but I figured out how to use the dingy Wheels on the tugboat. The dinghy wheels are offset so I flip them completely around and put them on backwards on the trucks which makes them a little bit more inset. Only in extreme situations where I stand on the edge of the board I get some bite in the back. But to answer your question yes you can probably add 1/4 inch riser. It's one of those things you have to experiment with. I can't believe I forgot to mention it but this is one of the only tugboats that has the smaller Wheels if you look in the catalog you'll notice the other versions have the larger 63 mm Wheels. In an interview they said the smaller Wheel versions are best for skating bowls where the wheel will clear the coping better.

Hello Andreas how are you? That's awesome man. Here's the tip. Start in a smooth flat concrete with no cracks or pebbles to throw you. Push off one time slow and make sure your feet are in the middle of the board if not you'll find yourself turning in One Direction or the other. You may feel weird at first but keep your knees bent and stay low so if you fall you don't drop from too high. One thing I didn't know when I made this review was the black Tugboat is the only one with the smaller Wheels. Where did you order yours from?
@Andreasnordenstrom
@Andreasnordenstrom 5 лет назад
@@Raychristofer Hello! I'm good! The only option I had in my local online skateshop, was the Tugboat Chill Cat. It says 60mm(78A) wheels, would you reccomend bigger wheels for beginner. Or do you think it's good enough?😊 The price here In Norway is $210.. 😅
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 5 лет назад
@@Andreasnordenstrom if the area you live has rough streets then a 63 mm definitely be better but otherwise you'll do fine with the 60, you just want to learn push over cracks and rocks rather than trying to skate over them
@Andreasnordenstrom

Could i put the 63mm Fattys, directly on you think? Since they sell the same board with both type of wheels. Or is it different trucks, or other parts that makes it difficult?😊

@@Andreasnordenstrom heck yeah you can put them on no modification needed. The only thing you may want to get his quarter inch risers just in case you get wheel bite but try it out without them first. Or if it didn't ship yet you can ask the company if they can swap out the wheels.

Maybe you're talking about the wheels as if they can't be changed because you're reviewing the complete only as Landyachtz sent it, but in case you don't know, you can add taller risers to the board so you can accommodate bigger wheels if you want a smoother ride on rough terrain.

Don't waste time thinking about the negativity of others and do what you enjoy. The Tugboat dimensions read as only a little larger than the Dinghy, yet the Tugboat looks huge in comparison. What's going on? Is that an older, smaller Dinghy? I thought the specs were something like 28" to 30" and 8" width to 9" width among the two boards. One of the quick question. Is that wave pattern a textured part of the grip or is it a painted design?
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 6 лет назад
synapticflow you are correct it's 2 inches longer and a bit wider but it does feel a lot bigger. It's strange the griptape has that pattern built in. It's a good idea that they came up with these two boards being this close because it's good to have a choice in sizes

Great video! I have the smallest sized penny board right now but find that I get the death wobbles too often and stop suddenly on pebbles too much to be able to ride it to and from class on campus without almost eating it. I'm 5'9 and my feet are size 10 womens so I am looking for something more stable and durable for curbs, sidewalks, and tiled/brick roads. Would the tugboat be a good option as I already have a smaller board or is the dingy more stable in terms of not feeling every crack or bump? Thanks!
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 5 лет назад
Hello thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment. Brick tiled roads that's a tough one I would almost recommend something larger than the 63 mm Wheels the dinghy comes with. I would say get the largest wheel you can for the size board you're looking for. Probably go to a Zumiez or a Ron Jon Surf Shop at a mall near you and you can get a better feel. Sorry about the rocks or Pebbles that's one of the worst feelings to suddenly stop and fall

Word up Joseph what's up and thanks for stopping by. About a year before this I did a review comparing my dinghy and Penny Nickel board. I emailed Landyachtz and ask them could I collaborate with them but when they saw how few views that video got they said they don't really do that. About nine months later that dinghy video had to reached 18,000 views and I reached out to them again and the team manager was impressed and he told me I could choose any board from their catalog so that's how I got the tugboat. This tug boat video is extremely popular as well but unfortunately when I emailed them back a few times I haven't gotten a response. My advice to you is if you want to approach companies it's make sure you have a solid body of work first so review the board gear that you have as best you can but honestly there's not a lot of skate companies I've been able to find to hook me up like this

Ray, for the bearings if they roll longer when you push'em with your hands doesnt mean they're performing in a better way, it just means there is less oil on them but it wont go faster. rolling with the hands actually doesnt mean anything for a skateboard's bearing. if you want bigger wheels on the thugboat you can still put 180mm rkp trucks and you'll be able to put 65mm wheels no problems (if you put risers can go to 70 easily) if will feel less turny though.
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 6 лет назад
eferretti what's up bro, what I do notice is as far as the bearings is concerned my year old dingy rolled longer when riding it than the brand new tugboat not just in my hands. I actually figured out how to make the dinghy Wheels work they are offset so I turned them inside out bringing them closer to the center of the board and almost completely eliminate Wheel bite unless I Forced it. I have to review the board the way it is in stock form that's why I didn't talk about modifying it. Landyachtz did a very long video showing their complete 2018 lineup and they mentioned that they use smaller wheels on some of the boards for it to be more capable when riding bowls because it allows the board to grind the coping easier. So my all black Tugboat has those smaller Wheels but apparently the other models have the larger 63 mm version. I didn't realize that when I was shooting this review
@mulldriftyr
@mulldriftyr 6 лет назад
yes they put a larger truck and a smaller wheel on this new thugboat compared to previous year, they did that too also on the beastwreck dinghy from 2018. if you enhance the trucks you have to put smaller wheels or put larger riser pads. i talked about rkp because they sit higher than tkp trucks. i turn my wheels inside out only if they're centerset, for the offset i would keep them in the way they're because turning them would mean less grip and more prone to deteriorate when you carve big or slide. smaller wheels also helps for the occasional ollie and stuff ;) landyachtz are awesome board builders

Its D check this out, this black Tugboat seems to be the only one with a smaller 60 mm Wheels if you want to go over rough payment better look at the website and look at the other Tugboat models, you will notice the wheels have a marble pattern in them those are the 63 mm wheels that are bigger. Also the tugboat and decks are ever so slightly different with the different models. There's actually a tugboat with a Beach Party design that comes with 63mm wheels
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 6 лет назад
seanlin1202 what's up Sean, you know the sad thing is after shooting this video I realize this is the only Tugboat with the smaller 60 millimeter Wheels, if you look at the catalog they mostly have 63. They say this one is more geared to riding pools and copings because the smaller Wheels work better.
@seanlin1202
@seanlin1202 6 лет назад
Oh I didn't know that! I got the pugboat as well and it has 60mm wheels but the zumiez site says it's supposed to have 63mm, I'm tempted to just buy the wheels and swap them out. By the way, I bought a tugboat last week based purely on your video, I showed it to a friend of mine and he bought one as well!

seanlin1202 whaaat? Lol that's legit, I'm always shocked how well my skate videos do considering I don't look like your typical skater and this is a photography Channel. Maybe it's time I get sponsored LOL dude that makes me wonder if the people at the skate shop mixed and matched Wheels from different boards because I know the plug boat is supposed to have 63 also
@seanlin1202
@seanlin1202 6 лет назад
Haha well this was definitely the best review video I've seen for a skateboard! I was taking a look at Hawgs wheels on tactics and I think it might have 60mm wheels because they wanted it to be purple to keep with the theme and the only purple wheels I see on the site are 60mm. Now that I think about it I'm pretty happy with these wheels since I don't really like to go too fast down hills (yet).

@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 5 лет назад
Dinghy all the way bro. small enough to carry in class and tuck under the desk. im 250 and took it on a california roadtrip to skate parks and bowls. wait they have a model with slightly wider trucks I cant remember the name. oh its called the handstand. probably best of both worlds.
@dallasrenne9328
@dallasrenne9328 5 лет назад
Raychristofer I’ve been trying to decide for a week and I keep swinging back and forth 😂 I like that the tugboat is more stable, but at the same time I like that the dinghy is more portable
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 5 лет назад
One thing I will say is I didnt realize this is one of the few tugboat models with the small skatepark wheels, most others have the larger 63mm, skaters never really have just one board though get 2 or three different models and you will eventually gravitate to finding one thats best.

@@depswa3 hey there's something important to know before buying, the dinghy and the tugboat both come with different size wheel options. I recommend always getting the larger 63 mm option so look at the specs of the model you're about to get. It doesn't seem like much difference but it rolls over rough road better 🙂

@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 4 года назад
Hello Mike they're actually both perfect for beginners.the reflexes to balance and maneuver aboard or the same whether it's a bigger one or a smaller one. But if I would have to choose I would say use the larger board. Or even a longboard because they turn slower and are less twitchy. Hope That helps

What would be your build if you could blend both?
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 5 лет назад
Yo that's a serious question I never thought of. Now that you mention it the dinghy trucks are a bit too narrow and the tugboat trucks are a bit too wide I would like something right in between with the large Wheels and the soft grip tape. The older tugboats from a few years ago we're almost exactly like that but when they changed the design a lot of those boards were discontinued. What would you make if you could blend both?
