Laney LC15R. This little tube amp with a Celestion 10" speaker came in with no tube as a write off. But it turned out to be working fine when we got some tubes in it. We have a listen to this amp on the trusty Marshall 4x12 cab and then on it's own speaker. A good budget amp for someone starting out as a guitar player.

Back in 1970 the band I was in went to the Laney factory and collected our new backline. Lyndon was there to meet us in his recently acquired bigger premises in Digbeth, Birmingham. We got 2 X 100 watt Supergroup lead/bass amp heads, a 100 watt 4 channel PA with pair of 4X12 columns and 4X 4X12 guitar/bass cabs. We'd driven up from Plymouth and Lyndon helped us load our 35cwt Transit and then took us for a generous meal at a nearby café. He told us about Black Sabbath and how the demand for his amps had skyrocketed since Paranoid album was released. Slade also used the same backline as we now had. He said he'd have to move again to even bigger premises to cope with demand. They were fantastic amps and very reliable.. I tried a new Laney in 1989 and oh dear what a disappointment compared to those originals. I see they have now released a hand wired reproduction of the Supergroup 100 .. I bet that's a cracker ! Interesting video Martyn.. Illustrated perfectly the difference speakers make to the sound you get from even a lower cost basic amp.

I have a L100 from 1972. The quality problem with it is the fact that there is no room for wooden support blocks whatsoever in the lower corners of the plywood cabinet because the chassis takes the whole width of the cabinet. If the corners start to fall apart, it is very difficult to repair it or try to make it more damage resistent.

Hello Pete. That's a great story. It must have been awesome playing in bands in those days. Thanks for watching Pete and take care.

@@jutukka Something I didn't know about the L0100 design.. I only played through them in the 70's , I never looked at the innards .. I became interested in the workings of valve amps much later in life and I'm still a novice which is why I watch Martyn's channel in the hope I'll learn something 😅

I don't know what I was expecting but I wasn't expecting the sound that you were getting from that amp.
@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
Hello Ron. I wasn't expecting it to sound like that either. I downloaded the schematic and it's not a bad circuit. A bit like a Marshall JCM800. Thanks for watching Ron and take care.

Got one of these. Nice little amps can be picked up cheap!
@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
Hello Will Yes, I downloaded the schematic and the circuit design is pretty decent. Not far off a JCM800. Thanks for watching and take care.

Just picked up one of these for £40 in superb condition ( like new ) glad I did now !!! It just needs some switch cleaner in a couple of the pots to get rid of the crackles 😀 Like you I’ve considered the head conversion option.
@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
Wow, that's a bargain Garry. The head option is a great idea. If I had owned this one I would have gone down that route. Thanks for watching and take care.

Hi. Good Job. I was surprised by this amp with the 4x12.... everyone should have a decent 4x12. Greetings.
@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
Yes Miguel, everyone should have a 4x12. Thanks for watching and take care.

I noticed you keep checking the transformers..is that for heat ?? my friend has one of these amps and he says he transformer ( i think the output ) is over heating.. What might cause that to happen.?? Love your videos ,great work, regards.

Hello, thank you. I kept checking the power transformer. If it gets to hot then the bias would have to be reduced

Great video! I've got one of these, sounds brilliant, my only problem with mine is the low channel has volume fluctuations so is basically unusable. The high channel is fine however, I know that there is a PAD after the low input so maybe something is up with that?
@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
Hello Conor. Could be something simple. Check on a few forums to see if anyone else has had the same fault. I haven't come that fault before. Thanks for watching and take care

Nice video! Is the gain pot dual pot? The slight difficulty of getting clean sound before it starts very soon to distort, is probably caused by the second stage triode set to clearly function as a so called cold clipper. The possible dual gain pot system which affects the cathode bypass cap as well, may increase the cold clipper distortion compared to vintage amps. However the schematics of these amps show that it is normally quite a decent 2 triode cascade + DCCF + long tail PI + class AB p-p EL84 amp, so no surprise if it sounds quite good indeed. Reverb circuit + effects loop are done using opamps, I suppose.
@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
Hello, I checked the schematic and you are indeed right. I have used the cold clipper before in one of my test builds. But I have never seen the dual pot layout. Thanks for that. I you hadn't have left this comment I wouldn't have looked at the schematic. Thanks for watching and take care.

@@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher You're welcome. Keep on good work. 👍 P.S. I have built almost identical (except handwired on turret board) amps myself and I usally have used a switch to change cold clipper cathode resistor value and sometimes bypass cap value as well, but never tried this dual pot version myself. Maybe I'll try some day.

Hi! Thanks for the videos, really enjoying your channel. I got an LC15 where the volume cuts out after around 30 minutes of playing. Did you play test it for a good while?
@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
Hello Steven. I had it running for an hour or so and it never missed a beat. It could have been a blown preamp valve. The valves were missing when it came in, but that would be my guess. Thanks for watching and take care.

That sounds great. Is that all tube Distortion or is there some of those diode things helping it out.
@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
Hello, I would have to study the schematic in a more detail to answer that one. They sound great on a 4x12 cab. When I get another in for repair I will go in to the design in more detail. A good question though. Thanks for watching and take care.
