I would say in general, a sloppy gliss. is easy on the piano. However, to get them as crisp, clean and colorful as he did is INSANE. I mean he slides up to that last note perfectly every time while keeping everything artistic and beautiful. It is difficult enough to gliss, up to a note without hitting a finger on any other keys without trying to keep things bright and beautiful!
@alech9418
@alech9418 3 года назад
Then there are octave glissandos which are 50x harder. I can't get my fingers to keep the perfect spacing... ever...

I'm Chinese, I never liked Lang Lang growing up, always thought all his exaggerated gestures and facial expressions are unnecessary even embarrassing, until I was able to truly appreciate how great he masters the piano. He has done some fun reality shows in China in recent couple of years, I'm glad I could get to know him better through the show, Lang Lang is actually a very humble, pure, genuine, down-to-earth guy with a warm personality, he's not showing off or being dramatic with all the "unusual" movements/faces, it's just when he plays, he's so happy and passionate. The entire "don't clap during concerts" is another elitist invention of the modern day. Please, tell me, why can't I show my appreciation during a concert in between movements? Why can't a saxophone be in an orchestra? Why can't I dress casual to a concert? Tradition. But fck tradition, really. Just have fun. Clap in the middle of a solo to assert dominance. Show up to your concert in fishnets and a pink hoodie. Write your own tenor sax part into an existing symphony and play that. I don't get tradition... it's pointless.

As a currently practicing pianist, there is a lot of actual legitimacy to the gestures. As Brett said, it's mostly a byproduct of what you are playing. It is often easier to reposition your hand (depending on the piece, anyway) when you do crazy elegant stuff like that too, so it has an actual purpose beyond just looking like you're feeling REALLY extravagant and passionate about whatever you're playing. It's also an excellent way to release tension from your hands so you don't end up carrying it over to the next notes. Sidenote, that rendition of Chopsticks was beautiful and I can't believe he was able to get such expression out of such a simple melody. The level of control he has with all of his muscles is insane. The glissing was also :ok_hand:.

Well, as a classically trained musician myself, the museum culture has been deeply ingrained in classical performance. Lang Lang here has definitely brought back music (i.e. classical music for that matter) back to the people. He has made it more inclusive. In contrast to how we classically trained musicians cringe at wrong-timing of clapping. Obviously Lang Lang has engaged the audience excellently the fact that they could not help but clap. This is real music for real communities! Thank you Lang Lang for making classical music playing relevant and enjoyable for a wider range of audience :-)

Fun fact from my music history professor: when Liszt used to perform it was very common for people to cheer in the middle like this, much more similar to rock concerts than classical performances. He ate it up, he was a brilliant performer and Lang Lang's performing/playing style is actually reminiscent of Liszt's. However, at some point later in his career Liszt got fed up with it and would actively shush audience members if they started to applaud during his pieces. So, Liszt is one of the main reasons why it's common etiquette to be silent during classical performances.

The people watching that have little to no musical training only hear the notes. Intonation, articulation, modulation,, emphasis, pitch are things just either don’t know or just don’t care to know what they all are. They just want it to make them feel a certain way or just only to be entertained… It takes some of the enjoyment out of it if you spend the whole performance analyzing. They just want to relax a bit after a crappy day at work. I love when you guys hear or see a mistake or a really difficult part and you immediately look at each other and smile while reaching for the pause as fast as you can. Oh and the clapping. That might be something artificially added or they light up the “APPLAUSE” light and have the audience clap when instructed. I’m sure they would have the audience noise controlled like they do in “recorded in front of a live studio audience” tv programs.

Doing a glissando in piano isn’t hard, but doing a PERFECT one like that is demanding. Lang Lang seemed so effortless, too......

Late night shows like _The Tonight Show_ *do* have these audience-instruction signs, as do sitcoms. That's what _Shrek_ was parodying. There's a _very_ good chance the audience was instructed to clap. You have to remember that late night TV is basically entirely advertising. People go on to soft sell something through conversations and performances. Advertisers pay for it by showing overt advertisements between the soft selling. The producers' job is to keep it all engaging enough that the audience at home won't change the channel or fall asleep.

Start knocking with your left fist at one knock per second and then simultaneously with your right fist at one knock every two seconds. The amount of concentration that is required to pull this is off is massive and it's really impressive on this piano seeing as he's even changing the keys that he's pressing.

I worked in a jazz club in Melbourne and had the pleasure of seeing so many amazing musicians every week live. I'm learning more about classical music (a great deal from your channel, thank you!) and have never clapped during a classical piece, but I almost have to sit on my hands to do so. I love the relationship between musician and audiance in live jazz. Have you ever played a concert where applauding mid-piece was encouraged?

Maybe classical music needs an audience that isn’t afraid to make some noise. I used to play with this group that performs high level classical music in bars with noise and people drinking and playing pool, but they also packed the place every time and had a great time. It was an effective way to bring this music out of the conservatory and into unexpected places that inspired energetic and wonderful performances. You could have a string quartet, opera singer, classical guitar, saxophone quartet…basically anything from early music to 20th century experimental music. It was fabulous.
@pjbpiano
@pjbpiano Год назад
The thing is that classical music was created towards a certain group of people and those people have their culture of how to listen to that music. I do not think that would change any time soon. But I certainly think classical music can be taken to other audiences.
@Munchylego
@Munchylego Год назад
@@pjbpiano These days, that depends on who is listening. There is definitely the traditional music halls, and you can’t move or make a sound during the performance, but many people are playing this music in much more lively locations and breaking with established traditions. It is helping to bring some life into the genre, especially for younger people.
@pjbpiano
@pjbpiano Год назад
@@Munchylego yep. But they would still eventually have to learn the traditions that go along with the music. Eventually. Because as we know, this music has lasted this long simply because people preserved it and did not change according to what was popular at the time.
