Last week, U.S. health officials announced plans to investigate a possible association between breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma -- a rare but treatable cancer.
According to the FDA, the cancer risk -- if it exists -- is very small. Five to 10 million women have received implants in the past decade, and only 60 cases of the cancer have been reported worldwide (34 documented in literature).
We spoke to URMC plastic surgeon Dr. Howard Langstein (he performs more than 75 breast implant surgeries a year -- both for patients seeking augmentation, and those seeking reconstruction after cancer-related mastectomy) to see how patients should interpret the news.

This needs to be updated. The numbers are higher and it can show as masses in the capsules. Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma is now mentioned in implant manufacturer product inserts and recognized by The World Health Organization. MD Anderson in Houston, TX, is on the forefront of this research. Women have a right to know this possibility prior to undergoing breast augmentation. Many surgeons don't address the topic and they don't know much about it. The number of women being diagnosed will rise as more public awareness is made.
