Stop treating your employees so abusively. They aren't robots, they deal with high stress work every day with not enough breaks, and they aren't paid enough for the skill level that is needed to be an interpreter. Typical shit corporation.

This job is nothing like the examples in the video. If it were like that, it would be heaven, but in reality, both parties usually speak a lot, not clearly, too fast, and in addition, the company expects you to interpret the entirety of every message exactly as said by every person.

Do not become an interpreter. It's one of the worse jobs ever. Very stressful, low pay job. They put you in front of a computer, with a headphone and make you do interpretation, no stop, for hours. You will have terrible headaches, dizziness and you will end up losing your ability to hear well. Terrible job.

In my opinion, if interpreting over the phone is stressful for you, just work part-time. Get the experience. Learn if typing or noting notes 📝 is your thing since this job is consecutive and also study the medical terminology for a month before you apply. Later you can specialize in a specific industry such as finance, business, medical, legal, etc. or for international conferences as a simultaneous interpreter and work face to face, but REMEMBER, is a career where you can grow professionally, so take classes and go for higher education, you can get hired without a degree or certificate, but you get paid around the world proportionate to your level of education or experience and also consider learning Arabic, about 374.9 million people speak it.

I see a lotta people saying this job’s stressful, but I don’t think is as stressful as working at a call center either sales or customer service where the client’s pissed as fuck cuz he hasn’t received his refund or the fact that you have to make certain reservations while the client is saying what he paid for is a rip off 😂

@linkitty6402
@linkitty6402 3 года назад
i personally find interpreting to be much more stressful than customer service by the sheer amount of mental work you need to convert between languages, especially when it comes to medical, legal, administrative matters, you have to fish out the terminologies that come up and you can't do pre-assignment research like i did while i did interpreting for lectures for my practicum (that was stressful as hell already, especially when you get a speaker that just goes on and on so you have to memorize 5 minutes of ongoing speech from one go and rework all the sentence structure because different languages often have different sentence structures

I worked for Language Line in Mexico (outsourced) and it is like Slavery!!! Interpreting is the most exhausting job mentally there is and they do not give you any break!!! Any time you need to go to the bathroom you have to sign out and they don’t pay you for those minutes. You only get 30 minutes for a break when you work 8 hours but it is impossible to work that long and stay healthy! I had horrible migraine headaches every day and I had to stop. I couldn’t even work anymore. I reduced my daily hours and even then I needed more breaks. Well… they stopped sending me as many calls like as a punishment and of course the money wasn’t worth staying. I had to quit after a year! Don’t do it!

I interpret for a different company which pays much better than language line with less restrictions too. Language Line pay low, require you to answer calls on a landline, make you commit to 20 hours a week and you have to do a stupid assessment. I on the other hand am paid more, take calls calls on my mobile phone where ever I am and answer as many or as few calls as I want. Avoid Language Line unless you want to speak to emergency services all day!

Over 7 weeks, 3 exams, 2 phone interviews, sorted visa, and already signed contract, you still need to go for 3 weeks training and an exam at the end of it, which most likely you will fail if you are not the robot they want you to be. They are so needy they expect you to bring: New phone, PC, headphones, webcam, fast internet, quiet place and of course you already have working visa. They will waste your entire hiring session on you with a very dumb lack of communication process. They have zero patience and expect you to sort everything without even knowing what are you expecting.

Do not let a lower paying salary sway you from a job....most of the time bigger companies offer much more overtime which in the long run can equate to much more money, Interpreting hours, and paid Vacation/Holidays. With salary, OT, and contract work with Courts and hospital, etc....a hard working person can easily clear over 160k, but it takes licensing, connecting with the right Courts and Companies that give you the work...and the most important----a killer work ethic. An interpreter is able to translate a message depending on the context. Google translator is very literal. Yo won’t get the same accuracy if the conversation is about a specific speciality. But that’s not the main problem. The main problem is that these companies pay a low salary for the skills provided by the interpreters, they work under stress everyday and they just give you 80 minutes of break. That’s an insult for an interpreter getting back to back calls and working under stress every day.

And so what? C1 is the level required to be an interpreter, you do not need to be native. On top of that, think about how unlikely is to be fully native in multiple languages, there are a lot of people out there needing this type of service (in many languages) if the interpreter is helping them to communicate with each other effectively, that's enough, the goal is met.
