In his first ever podcast appearance, deer hunting legend and possibly the best big buck tracker in history, Lanny Benoit has a conversation with host of the Hunt Suburbia Podcast Patrick Guyette about his life, passions, and of course strategies and stories of how to find the biggest bucks in the woods and kill them by tracking them in the snow. Lanny recounts stories of his childhood, talks about what it was like growing up in the legendary Benoit hunting family, and tells many stories of the giant 200+ pound bucks he's tracked in Vermont, Maine, Ontario and New Hampshire in a way that only he can.
Special thanks to Lanny for the interview and the friendship that has followed!

I’m 45 yrs old and when I was a little boy in grade school. I can remember looking at Larry Benoit’s book that my dad had. How To Bag The Biggest Buck Of Your Life. The Original edition. I went through that book front to back 100 times. Amazed with the pictures of the big bucks Larry and Lanny had shot. It was back before it was a big deal to shoot big bucks. To hear Lanny say that back in his prime. The only thing that could save a big buck was a big river or running out of day light sends a chill down my spine. I can only imagine how many big 200 lbs bucks that have lost their life to that man’s trigger finger. And the thousands of miles tracking and the adventures he’s been on. In my opinion, there has never been a better whitetail deer hunter on the face of the earth than Lanny Benoit. There is a lot of amazing deer hunters. But there’s only one Lanny Benoit !

I once spoke to Larry Benoit. I will always remember our conversation. I bought his book many years ago and knew nothing about hunting. No one in my family hunted. I have been following the Benoit family ever since. Their books make great gifts. I want to thank you for this series.

Watched this video last night. Woke up to fresh snow this morning. Wind was wrong for the "good" stands on the home 80 so I hit a big chunk of public ground with the crossbow and got it done! Killed over 25 bucks on private but this was my first public land buck (should have been a 9pt but broke a G3) and first buck I've taken still hunting. Thanks for the inspiration.

He nailed the part about not being able to do that anymore. Those guys use to hunt telos which is where I grew up hunting and now the loggers have flattened that land. It’s a shame. All the major deer winter yards have been cut

As a kid during deer season, my dad and I would have to drive through route 100 past their house on the way to our camp and I'd see the bucks hanging from the porch. My dad stopped by so i could get a closer look, larry came out and told me one day I'd shoot bucks like that. Still trying 😅

IIRC, my introduction to Larry & Lanny was a big write-up in a hunting magazine (Outdoor Life, perhaps?) back in the 70's. Living in the South (FL & NC), the whole notion of tracking a deer over long distances and walking him down until you kill him is/was as foreign as Greek. It's got to be a challenging and rewarding way to hunt deer and I'm envious of those that get to do it.

I was at the New Brunswick hunt with Lanny , Shane and Lane , on one of the afternoons I was with Lanny we were scouting an area and stopped on one of the logging roads . Lanny opened the back door of the Suburban and an orange fell on to the ground, Lanny grabbed his rifle and had me throw the Orange in the air , he shot the orange turned to me and said now we have orange juice. I’ve never before or after seen someone shoot like that,

Great Pod cast.. as an older guy…at 69…and killed over 75 bucks in my lifetime……It’s great to see Lanny tell of his deer hunting ….at my age now I have to stand hunt areas of whitetail buck.. choke points…or regular buck travel routes..to collect a nice buck…knees are so bad… can’t walk the miles I used to here in Northern Michigan…….my semi daily..squirrel hunting helps to narrow down the mature buck routes or daily whitetail movements…our bucks in North west Michigan…usually are more in the 150 to 180 lb range due to the hard winters of heavy snow and heavy hunting pressure these day...

A real hunter he is... not these corporate fools that hunt on a farm off feed and think they are hot shit cause they shoot a 270 pound 300 inch deer. They suck at real hunting and they look pathetic doing it. Spend thousands on equipment not needed to look cool and couldn't find a deer in the woods up here if they tried for 2 months

I feel same n say come up here to Whiteface Mt area ware I live n hunt see how ya hot shot hunters do. There is huge bucks here! But so much mountian land there hard to get to. Most don't got the grit to climb for them. My biggest was an 8pt thick webbed horns 28inch spread, 236lbs.

Spend your Whole day off just to fail.. But at the end you will have learned something about hunting Deer,.. "if" You love what your doing... That is the answer.. Find yourself on the track.

A 742 Bi-Centennial model with AAA grade wood handpicked by the gunsmiths working there the Friday before it was assembled. Rifle not carbine length in .30-06. it pays to have relatives that are gunsmiths. Oh yeah, has the "X" serial number as well.
