A perfect example of a lens that doesn't do well on test charts, but for real-world use looks amazing! Lately I've been less interested in technically perfect gear and put more weight on the fun factor and overall experience.

I picked up the 7Artisans 35mm /0.95 a few months ago for my Z6. It's a crop format lens, but the image circle is big enough for full coverage on 16:9 fullframe video, or 4:5 format stills. Not bad for $250 CAD.

I've been watching you guys since the olden days and I have to admit this might be my favorite video you've ever done. I loved the humor. I loved the descriptions and the testing. Most of all, the commentary was informative and honest. Great job! I kinda want to try this lens out one day, it has some potential to be a "modern classic" with the character and focus fall off.

I have a Voigtländer f0.95 for my micro four thirds cameras, and I have to say that once you get used to composing with that paper thin depth of field it's so much fun and really opens up new ways to get a nice artsy/vintage look, especially when shooting black and white.

I actually bought one the day it was announced and received it a few days later. It's quickly become one of my favorites. The versatility is pretty amazing. Center sharpness further than 1m away is actually incredible, even wide open. When it's stopped down for landscape it's actually my sharpest lens in that category. Really love what they're doing with this.
@davisfan
@davisfan Год назад
I've long noticed that the sharpness of most lenses changes depending on how far you're focusing. I once read an article by Vittorio Storaro about Café Society, and he mentions that he shoots test charts at various distances when he's choosing optics for a project. I think that's something that most youtubers don't do, but also, un the few ocassions when I've visited or worked in expensive sets, doesn't seem to be done too often. Portraits don't need to be as sharp as landscapes or macro, and perhaps we should pay more attention to those details.

These affordable lenses give many the chance to explore wide apertures. True there's distortion to the edges along with some softness, but not all can afford L series lenses. I enjoy the Laowa, and other affordable lenses - they offer character, they have attitude and for most ordinary filmmakers, for the price, they're a ton of fun. For people that shoot for a living, it's not for you.

I love Laowa lenses and many are affordable, but I’m having trouble justifying this as an “affordable” lens at $900…
@chilecayenne
@chilecayenne 2 года назад
@@tevebaugh I dunno…look at native canon RF glass for instance…$2K +/- easily for any of their lenses. There is a new normal, and with inflation starting to really kick in, it ain’t gonna get any better any time soon. $900 for a lens isn’t pricey anymore, IMHO for FF modern lens anymore.

I just got it and I'm enjoying it. It's much easier to use than my 50mm f 0.95 from another manufacturer, thanks to the large focus ring (realistically you always want your hand to go to focus, not aperture), the large focus throw, and a focal length that's easier to frame in my view. 35mm with narrow depth of field allows some 'vanishing angle' compositions like the kid in your tests while a 50mm is more like face on.
@jaredlucow
@jaredlucow 2 года назад
I got the mitakon 50mm f0.95 years ago and it's still my favorite lens.. especially for video. Reviewers and professionals often dismiss it for all the mentioned "faults" but the average person has no clue about any of these issues, and often love the results specifically because it has way more character and things that pros consider to be disadvantages.

could you guys review some of the "cheap" 0.95 lenses available on the market like 7artisans / TT artisans 35 and 55 f0.95? Those lenses sit at an incredibly low pricepoint and with very few reviews online (or none at all depending on the lens), it is really hard to decide if those lens are complete POS or actually good value

I personally like the 35mm, but it is a bit of a novelty imo. It's nice to play with when you add a warm pro-mist or cinebloom filters, but it's already a softer lense so I primarily use it with a specific look and feel in mind.

I have the 7Artisans 35mm f0.95 for Nikon Z mount. I use it with my Z50 frequently, especially for video work. I spent $180 USD for a "used" version on what I think is the official 7Artisans Ebay page. I say "used" because this was definitely brand new and hot off the press. Basically everything they say in this video is true of the 7Artisans, except the 7Artisans flares worse, doesn't get as sharp, and might have better vignette control due to being an APS-C lens. I like the quality of the Venus Optics lenses, but they're just too expensive for me.

Let's face it, the lads very seldom (if ever) have reviewed any of these relatively inexpensive, contract-manufactured, exotic-spec lenses… and frankly, I'm baffled why they decided to make an exception for this one. Did Laowa kidnap Chris's hair-care products and hold them hostage? I'm actually a happy user of several “characterful” lenses of this sort, but I don't see much point in doing formal reviews of them… either you like the look, or you don't.

I'm seriously considering this for my Cine rig. I have the 35 1.4 GM, and I love it, but I have to disassemble/reassemble my rig every time i want to use it on a stills camera. This might be good just to leave on the SIII with a follow focus.

T stops don't determine the look iirc. It's the relative size of the aperture that allows light rays to be not hitting at the right angle, hence bokeh. A f/2 lens will simply look darker even if it was a t4, but the bokeh should be the same.
@niccollsvideo

We thought the same thing but figured few people would ask. However you did, and we did test it as well! Actually very impressed because we assumed it would be poor. Against a Canon 50mm 1.2 RF the transmission was effectively identical at 1.2. Actually slightly brighter on the Laowa. At .95 I'd say it was only a third to half stop brighter than at 1.2 but still noticeably more light.
