In this video we talk about the new Laowa Argus FF T1.0 primes for RF/E/L/X mounts. 28,35,45mm set retailing for 1499.00 per lens or 3999.00 for a 3 lens set. Wild looks, wild times!
call me old school but I think this high aperture stuff is great for photography / portrait shooting, also in narrative films when needed (like crazy dof in Oppenheimer). but for me - I like to show the background. think a F 2.8 / 4.0 is still a very pleasing out of focus experience
You are totally wrong, in true modern cinema only the eyelashes should be in focus, everything else should be a blurry swirl of indeterminate colours 😅
@@SamWelker Totally agree, 'the full eyelash' as they call it in the industry is a sure sign of an amateur production and any DP worth their salt would beat the poop out of ACs dumb enough to shoot it
This is insane. I recently started researching cine lenses in the past month and i swear to GOD there's been like a new cine lens lineup released every week or so.
@@PeterDiBussolo honestly the darkening in the corners is pretty extreme even in RF mount wide open. With PL it would be quite a bit worse. I’d bet they don’t ever come out with a PL even just for performance
i am using the stills version 35mm for some years now and i absolutely love the character of that lens. shame they did not launch a 65mm-ish new lens with this cine range, the 35 and 45 are kinda close together.
The rate at which new cine lenses are coming out is wild! Def agree that Laowa seems to be one of the companies that is pushing a lot of good ideas and trying to innovate in the space. I think the only t1.0 lens I was ware of before this were from Zhongyi Optics....the tests from those a few years ago looked pretty nice even if there was CA issues wide open. After that I think the Nightwalkers albeit for s35 at t1.2. Similar CA Issues wide open...
The 35mm f0.95 FF is at $650 right now, and I think it might be wiser to compare before buying either. I'm leaning to the older 35mm f0.95 due to the price.
Leaning towards just grabbing the stills version of a 35mm. Don't think I'd reach for these on a full production without some additional focal lengths. Tempting though!
Unfortunately, theuey didn't realize the PL version, but maybe this is due to some phisical limits introduced by the PL flange distance. Even EF version doesn't exist (maybe for the same reason)...
Hi @northwest camera, argus lens set is appealing for its speed and price point, when compared to DZOFilm Arles. Do you know if laowa plans to release PL/EF and L mount options? I'd suspect they don't plan to due to the low market demand and profitability forecast. Any perspective you can share? Thanks
Are these rehoused versions of the stills copies? If so, don’t count on new focal lengths any time soon, they’ve been around for several years without a new entry. I have the 45mm and printed some gears for it. While it’s definitely fun, I find that I never reach for it.
The 28mm is a completely new lens. Obviously it is impossible for an F/1.2 lens to have a T value of 1.0. However, diving deeper, we see that the old lens was made up of 13 Elements in 7 Groups with 13 iris blades and a 50 cm minimum focus distance, and the new lens is made up of 14 elements in 9 groups with 15 iris blades and a 40 cm minimum focus. The other two full frame focal lengths appear to be identical to their stills versions. However, Laowa mentions that the lenses are color matched so there might be a few adjustments for consistency. I think we can reasonably expect another focal length, however given the consistent physical parameters of the series, the longest we can expect is 70mm. Still- 28mm, 35mm, 45mm and 70mm all T/1.0 is enough range for most things, and really exciting to myself. That 28mm T/1.0 is able to create an image we have not seen before.
@@MrFreezeMovie thanks Gregory! I'm glad to hear the 28mm is new (I was afraid it was just the f1.2 stills lens with an inaccurate label). Great to see new options coming to market for sure.
So these are just the Laowa Argus F0.95 lenses in a new cine housing, gears and with a T stop instead? They are only $599 but the T1.0 version are like £$1,300+ but are they optically the same as the already released Laowa Argus F0.95 set.
How far past infinity does this focus? (Rant: when did it become acceptable for a manual focus lenses to not be calibrated for infinity, damn you cost cutters).
Looks like that part didn’t make it to the marketing material. Let me check in and see when L mount might be happening. We talk in pre launch, so will report back.
I was about to post the same question. Hopefully there will be good news. I have the Laowa 2x super macro 90mm APO lens in L-mount, and I am very impressed with the quality. I would love to have more Laowa lenses for my Sigma FPL.
@@NorthwestCameraCo No doubt. It would still have great fall off at 2.8 up close. That said, having that T1 for full body shots, that isolation is insane! Great video. Thank you.
