I’m not too sharp on theory, so I spent time counting notes on my fingers. The top three strings of any fret are the minor third chord of the bottom strings on the same fret. The relative minor is made of the top three strings on the 4th chord fret of whatever scale. 3rd fret is G and Bm. The relative minor (Em) will be found up on “C” - 8th fret . I tuned my steel from standard open E to this Emaj7. It is a really nice tuning. Having fun.

For the sake of theoretical accuracy, in your major7 tuning, the top three strings are NOT the relative minor (vi/6 minor) of the lower strings. They are a iii (3 minor). G#, B, and D# make a G#m triad - the third degree of diatonic chords in the key of E.

Hi Robert! Fantastic video. In 2009 I decided build a home made lap steel that stils with me at these days. It´s a fantastic instrument as you described. I used in past the same tuning that you Emaj7 and it´s a very rich tuning. Actually, I´m using the famous "Nashville Tunning" on my lap. This is a common tuning for acoustic guitar than I decided try on my lap and was fantastic. Now I have a pedal steel vibe on lap steel and works so well since you use the same tech to play slide on standard tuning, but how you have the strings 3456 one octave up, this gives you a diferent tone. You can made a Major cords on strings 2,3,4 Minor Chords on 1,2,3, Minor 7 with strings 1,2,3,4, Major 7 on 123 and using the technique of bending behind the tone bar gives you a pedal steel vibe. Please make video with more info about Emaj7 tunning. It´s not a very used tuning and I think that you will have some rich information. Thanks and best regards from Brazil!

Leandro Cleto This sounds incredible. Best pedal steel emulation I’ve ever heard on a lap steel. So let me get this straight: you’re using a set of strings for Nashville tuning (strings 3456 up an octave), then tuning them to Emaj7?
@lecleto
@lecleto 4 года назад
@@RobertCassard , thank you for comments! I´m using a two regular sets of 0,11 Ernie Ball strings for standard guitar tuned in Nashville tuning. As you said, strings 3456 octave up and strings 12 on regular tuning Nasville Tuning. String 1 - E string tuned in E - regular (1st set) String 2 - B string tuned in B - regular (1st set) String 3 - E string tuned in G - octave up (2ndset) String 4 - B string tuned in D - octave up (2ndset) String 5 - G string tuned in A - octave up (2ndset) String 6 - D string tuned in E - octave up (2ndset) For chords just think as "part" of bar chords on standard guitar. Minor chords: Strings 123 - think in minor a bar chord Major chords: Strings 234 - same shape of A chord Major 7 chords: Strings 123 - same shape of D7+ Minor 7 chords: Strings 1234 - part of bar shape of Fm7 Major chords 9: String: 2345 - Bend string 5 to resolve the 9 on third of chord. The octave up strings and bend the 9 on string 5 to resolve on third of chord create the signature sound of pedal steel. The theory behind this chords are invertions and relatives but is much more easy think as part of standard bar chords on convetional guitar. If you have some other questions feel free to ask me!

Got a new Rogue for $79 with the bag and legs. Tuned to C6 for a little western swing and poop-kicker old school country. Not a bad steel but I'm going to swap out the single coil strat pickup, change the nut and bridge and lengthen the scale to a true 22.5 ". These things are so fun to play I can'r put it down. I even bought a cheap tacky retro taco shell cowboy hat to wear when I'm playing it. Now that right there is full-blown hick!

Brilliant. Living up to the gutbucket moniker, and having fun on the range! I'm impressed you'll be performing such extensive surgery on a $79 axe. What pickup do you plan to install?
@goodun6081
@goodun6081 5 лет назад
@@RobertCassard , Lollar makes a repro of the original Valco lap steel pickups, but I believe they are designed primarily for installation on a regular electric guitar*, and I don't know how well they would retrofit into a Rogue. Those Lollar pickups probably also cost more than the Rogue lap steel itself. Still, those original Valco pickups found on Supros and National lap steels and so on have an amazing sound, they have tons of headroom and clean output, and if you run them through a cranked up amp with dirt and distortion you can still hear the individual strings separately from each other. If there's anybody here who hasn't heard David Lindley play Mercury Blues through a double-neck Supro lap steel, they should go check it out. * look up the history of Ry Cooder and his infamous Cooder- Casters, Strats that were retrofitted with vintage Valco pickups.
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 5 лет назад
@@goodun6081 Great info, man. Looks like the Lollar Cooder-caster PU retails for about $265. You can buy an original vintage Valco Lap Steel for about $450. That makes it a tough choice!
@goodun6081
@goodun6081 5 лет назад
@@RobertCassard , about 15 years ago I bought the double neck lap steel with a small late 1940s Vallco built Airline amp, a raucous end great-sounding little amp, for about 300 bucks, from an antique store. I have a white single neck Supro that cost me only thirty bucks about 13 or 14 years ago from a brick a brack and junk store. And, I have a third Plain Jane supro steel, plain brown wood, no neck-position markers or fretboard whatsoever, that cost me 70 bucks in an auction about 10 or 12 years ago. I bought it mostly for the pickup, thinking I might build myself a Coodercaster of some sort. Just another project I haven't gotten around to! There was also a historically interesting Dan Electro single pickup lap steel at that same auction, which went for close to four hundred bucks as I recall. I say historically interesting because I doubt it would have sounded very good, unlikely to sound anywhere near as good as any of the Valco pickup equipped lap steels, because the Dan Electro's single lipstick tube pickup also functioned as the bridge. Yep, that's right, the strings didn't just pass over the pickup, they actually contacted the pickup case, so not only would you be unlikely to get much string motion being sensed and picked up by the pickup, do to it being located at the very end of the string travel, but I would expect this set up to be noisy and prone to microphonics and weird string noises. There weren't any intentionally filed notches in the pickup cover that could hold the strings in place and prevent them from moving side to side. I would imagine this would sound thin and buzzy, but it sold for good money, and I got the supro literally for a steal! By the way, I've been lucky enough to see Junior Brown play live in concert. that guy is a wild man! and if you're not familiar with Dave whole, he's a fiery blues rock slide player from Australia who does everything "wrong," playing bottleneck style but overhand, on a regular guitar, and he is fantastic.

Hey Sam. For Emaj7, E7 or E tuning, a regular set works fine. Here’s one specifically for E: amzn.to/3josTCO

Rogues may be inexpensive but they sound great and the make other great sounding instrument too so for less than the price of a rental my kid owns it instead.

Not sure about Revelation. Here’s a new link to the Rogue: amzn.to/3j3x8U5 And it looks like the Harmonia brand may be similar.

My Question still is: can you play in different keys with one tuning?
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 5 лет назад
Absolutely. It’s all a matter of which fret becomes your “home” (tonic) position for a given key.

Christian Lives Matter // Crews In may ways, a lap steel is simply a 6-string slide guitar. You can’t capo it easily, but you can tune it many different ways, e.g., the Emaj7 tuning that I like, but also Open D, Open E, Open G. Sometimes one of those tunings lets you strum “open” for your home or tonic pitch, and that’s the sound you want. Especially true when playing blues.

@@RobertCassard yes my concern is to be able to use one tuning for all my playing like I do on Guitar and Uke. Is that possible?
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 5 лет назад
Christian Lives Matter Sure. That’s what I do. I always leave my lap steel in Emaj7 tuning for everything

Isn't c# the relative minor of E ?
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 4 года назад
Yes it is, Django. If your play all the strings open (without the bar) in this Emaj7 tuning, the bottom three string form an E major chord and the top three strings form a C# minor chord. In my example, with a bar at the third fret, the bottom three form a G major and the top three form an E minor. Make sense?

@@RobertCassard Hi Robert , thank you for the quick reply, caught me off guard there 🙂 It's when you said tuning is EMaj, and top three are relative minor of E, relative notes would contain c# E G# ?

I assume you need to be pretty good at fingerpicking to get the best out of a lap steel.
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 3 года назад
I hadn’t really thought about it, but that’s a good assumption, Alan. Travis-style picking isn’t typical on a lap steel, but being comfortable with making your fingers work individually and in groups of 3 or 4 really helps.

You should think of Lap Steel (or Dobro) as different instruments from vertical guitars . A substantial numbers of Steel / Dobro players have zero background with armpit guitars .

I knew you were joking. Even Euro import fees wouldn’t make a slide cost as much as the lap steel. ;-)
