Wow, I'm impressed that it stopped all the 5.56 threats at level III. I'm a little disappointed that my RMA III+ plates won't stop M855A1.

But to think that ceramic is only .125" thick vs this .320" :D RMA has said that built the 1092 to RF1/2 specs, and it does very well at that. The RMA is going to shot way less back face on threats. Maybe they're come out with an RF2+ plate :D

I bought (2) of these for $178/shipped during some deal they had awhile back, and I feel comfortable knowing they would stop a couple of M855's if I was shot in the area of the strike face. I think these would stop the most common rounds most civilians and police officers carry today, which are M193 & M855, and maybe some AK rounds. I think your chances of getting shot are EXTREMELY low, but getting shot with a .308 is even lower IMO, so these will definitely tide me over 4 now... Thanks SO much 4 this video brother!

Thank you for another great video. I am curious do you know the amount of powder and type of powder used in the 31 grain ss190 that was loaded in a 556 shell. SS190 and SS198 both have an aluminum core. The 198 has a hollow tip, but SS190 has a steel penetrator roughly the same size/shape/config as SS109/M855. I believe that load used TAC in excess of 26gr.

AR500 steel is not going to stop those piping hot rounds, especially that light 556 round going 3700+ FPS or the EPRs. I have to rethink my armor strategy. Right now I’m running AR500 level 3 plate, front back and sides. It’s heavy. I’m going to grab a TSG level 3+ plate for the front. What can I say, they’re cheap and stop M193. I’m throwing EPRs but I’m not expecting my opposition to do the same. Is that expectation folly or reasonable?
@TheMattMoy
@TheMattMoy 3 года назад
Important to note that TSG Level 3+ is only tested up to 2,900 fps for M193. M193 out of a 16" barrel will generally be over 3,000 fps
@nicholaddelioncourt7863
@nicholaddelioncourt7863 3 года назад
@@TheMattMoy You are correct about the plus rating on my armor and the speed of M193 out of a 16" barrel. But by-and-large 16" barrels have been out of fashion/favor for quite some time now. The longest that the trend setters(Garand Thumb, Lucas, ect...) are wanting to go these days is 14.5" and prefer to stay around 11.5". My armor will stop M193 out of an 11.5" point blank range. How am I so confident in my budget armor? I shot it with M855A1 - yeah buddy, the good stuff - at point blank out of a 10.5". Not only did it stop it, it stopped it clean with no BFD. If I was really worried that I am going to face special threats I would get some NIJ LvL 4 ceramic plates with polylithic construction that pushed the ceramic all the way out to the edge. You got to watch out, those budget/chinese LvL 4 armor tried some tricky stuff that can leave you vulnerable. Such as stopping the ceramic coverage an inch from the edge and constructing the armor with a monolithic ceramic tile thats' multihit capability is a matter of good luck over good construction. Anyways, I hear you but I'm not sweating it. That 3+ TSG plate has done a good job on threats that it's not rated for so far.

As I mentioned on Patreon I just got 3 of these plates also. One thing I noted is that they are about 1.06" thick rather than the .7" that MrGnG report with the plate they sent him. I don't remember if you discussed the thickness in the video but I have the memory of a goldfish. Do most ceramic faced plates only have ceramic that comes out about that far from the plate edges or is that a result of buying such "budget" plates?
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 4 года назад
Vic, I did not measure it. Let me go and do that just for verification. The strike face coverage is kind of one of those gray areas. Consumer wants "light plate". Manufacturer can make lighter plate by not putting ceramic all the way to the edge, knowing that NIJ allows the min edge shot distance of 1.5". I need to read on why the NIJ doesn't having any testing for edge shots, other than maybe they know the bullet at that distance to the edge can still cause the bullet to come out at a weird angle and penetrate into the body? Most if not all US manufacturers are using a full ceramic strike face. Where they then save weight is going to less backing material. Say the Shot Stop III+ GT. Stops M855A1 because of thicker ceramic, (Can't stop M80A1), but is only an SRT plate, because it can't take 6 shots of M80 ball.

@@BuffRANGE I am bummed that they are really 7.8"x 9.8" plates when I didn't know they would be. I didn't see your notice of the up coming video until after I ordered them. We'll I'll up my Patreon contribution and more often wait for your reviews in the future.
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 4 года назад
:D That's a major concern for people. RMA took heat from doing the reduced strike face on the 1189 and 1199 early on, and that's why the Gen 2's they offer now are full strike face. They did amend their website listing when they still offered the Gen 1 to include the fact that the strike face was reduced size, which is the transparency I strive more armor sellers to have. Same with country of origin. If you're using imported materials, or plates from another country, I don't have issue with that, as armor is a very set formula right now. if you're a reputable company and due your QA due diligence then, it's a global market these days.

It’s because the ceramic is very thick and likely MrGNG’s surplus 30-06 M2AP tops out at 2600-2700 FPS. The NIJ calls for 2880 FPS and would likely stop the bullet but backface would be extreme.

@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 4 года назад
Each plate is unique in it's rating. Currently the NIJ Level III rating is actually ONLY M80 ball. The New RF1 and 2 standards now also include 5.56. .308 is technically a higher threat than 5.56. It carries much heavier projectiles at speeds just as fast as 5.56

@bigsean2473 4 года назад
@@BuffRANGE well i know 308 is a more powerful round but the speed and how small the 556 is is what makes it a higher rating on plates
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 4 года назад
@@bigsean2473 it all depends on the plate. When talking about steel plates, speed in smaller diameter is the killer. in Poly (UHWMPE) plates, bullet construction (specifically a hardened core) is the killer. With ceramic plates you typically need speed and core construction. Level IV plates for instance will stop M995 AP, but generally have troubles with M993 AP
