Lapping my granite surface plate2

In this video, I finish lapping my granite surface plate. It was, in my opinion, relatively easy to achieve a high degree of accuracy with basic tools both for measuring and lapping. The only high precision tool that was used was a Clock gauge calibrated in microns bought online very cheaply!. I used a cast iron surface plate that came out of a skip (dumpster) as a lap and built my own "Repeatometer" to measure it. I found that although somewhat daunting, it was much easier to lap in the granite plate than I thought it would be! Don't hesitate to do this at home, but, I will not be responsible for any accidents derived from this video!

Very interesting, great job! I think you have inspired us to build a repeat o meter, and buy a cast iron plate.. :) Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I really enjoyed it.

Have you run the repeatometer over the lap to make sure you haven’t created a matched curved surface? Or if you have a good parallel or straight edge you could confirm the zero with that. Enjoyed your vid, where did you buy your diamond from? I am trying to lap a granite worktop cutoff with polishing compound but it’s a bit slow to say the least.

I milled and scraped the Lapp before using it. I used the area that I found was flattest on the granite plate to scrape the Lapp. I bought 45 to 55 micron and the 10 to 20 micron diamond flour on line, it is really cheap! Good luck with the lapping!

I’m struggling to find a UK supplier, who did you buy from?

Hi matt nice video, have you checked for flatness using an autocollimator?!

Thank you for you comment. Not since before this second re-grind. I don't have one available! I calibrated the "repeat-o-meter" on an area of the surface plate that was "know" to be flat from the test with the auto-collimator before beginning re-lapping. I have 1 micron (0.0000393701") movement across the diagonal of my 3' square plate. A result I am very pleased with for home shop re-grinding!

Friend! I don't have a very thick stone (100mm). I have a lot of 20mm stones. I intend to "work" 3 large diameter stones (1000mm X 1000mm). I think 20mm is too unstable for a big rock like that. Can I glue several stones to get a more stable thickness? I chose a harder black stone in my region of Brazil. I also thought about making ribs in the shape of honeycombs between a sandwich of two 20mm stones.

Thank you for your comment. Why not! Glue them together with epoxy glue! I wouldn't bother with the "ribs" on the back, five layers of 20mm would be great!! Your going to use the "Whitworth" three plate method. I'd love to know how it works out! How about making a video and sending me a link!

@@MatthewTinker-au-pont-blanc I would be honored to make this video, it should take a while. I will process 3 plates A-B-C. I intend to study the subject a lot so as not to waste time and precious material. Thanks for answering me.

Many thanks Matthew, How do you clean the lap before going dow a grit size?
@MatthewTinker-au-pont-blanc
@MatthewTinker-au-pont-blanc 4 года назад
Thank you for your comment! I dust off with a paper towel you could vacuum it too! I avoid getting the dust damp as it's harder to clean! If I'm going to go over it with the repeatometer, I use windowlene window cleaner to finish. In my opinion, the dust and the remains of the diamond flour that remains after you wipe down with paper towels is insignificant!

@@MatthewTinker-au-pont-blanc He's talking about cleaning the cast iron lap, not the granite plate. A careful wiping down with a fine silicon carbide stone to "knock out" the embedded diamond particles should help, but the best bet is to have separate CI lapping plates for each grit you plan to use.

Your right! I read it too fast! You can also use a piece of Al . I ,must admit, I wasn't too worried as I carried on until I felt it wasn't cutting any more. Maybe, for the future, i should bare that in mind, thanks!
