If your laptop only works when plugged in then you might be worried your battery is dying or something else serious is happening. If your laptop is not working without a charger then you should watch this video for a potentially money and time-saving fix!
Fortunately, there are two quick fixes within Windows 10 that can likely fix your problem!
Fix one: Disabling and re-enabling the acpi-compliant control method battery in your device manager
Fix two: Resetting your power profiles through the command prompt. The command I used is
powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
If this video helped you, consider supporting the channel directly!

00:00 - Intro and issue overview
01:52 - ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery
03:42 - Restore default power schemes
05:15 - What to do if these fixes don't work
Note: These fixes will only work if your laptop can charge the battery and your battery indicator shows that it is plugged in and charging when plugged in to the AC adapter.
If your laptop has no battery indicator or your battery doesn't appear to be charging then these solutions will probably not work for you.
If you would rather read about this solution, check out my blog post on this topic here: askacomputergeek.com/laptop-o...
Laptop used in the video:
Model: Lenovo 330S-15ARR
Processor: Ryzen 5 (2nd Gen) 2500U - 2Ghz base clock
GPU: Integrated - Vega 8
Ram: 8 Gb (2400Mhz)
Storage: 128Gb SSD
Screen: 15.6" at 1920x1080p resolution
OS: Windows 10 Home

You missed the discharge part it's when you take the battery out unplug the device hold down the power button for 30 seconds then put the battery back in then plug it into the wall, from there turn on the computer. In that process you're discharging all power and capacitors in your device, which could potentially fix the problem as well.

Many thanks - I tried both tricks unsuccessfully on my 2014 Toshiba Satellite. However, I learned a lot - eventually I bit the bullet, unscrewed the base of the laptop and took out the small CMOS battery (a CR2032). Several videos have suggested taking it out and putting it in again to reset the BIOS. I found mine was dead. I replaced it, did some date/time resetting and the laptop works a treat now.

I've tried your method with the battery and adapter as well, checked the voltage of the adapter and other methods, to no avail. Wow! I was skeptical, but it worked! I went to Device Manager > Batteries and disabled the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Battery function. Got message saying I had to restart to let the changed setting take place. Did that, then with the computer running I pulled the plug from the charger and the computer stayed on! So then I opened Device Manager and enabled the ACPI Compliant Battery function again. This was with the laptop running on the battery. Again got the message needing to restart, so I did, and it still works. The battery icon is back and seems to show the correct battery charge, still running on battery. Then I plugged in the charger again, and it shows that the battery is charging. Seems to be perfect, like it was before the problem showed up. You saved me from buying a new internal battery pack. Before watching your video I had opened up the computer and used a multimeter to check the voltage at the battery connector, and there was zero volts. I thought maybe there was a fuse inside the battery pack to prevent a meltdown in case of a short circuit. But I followed your procedure and all is A-OK again. Thanks! My laptop is an Acer Predator Helios 300 that's about 3 years old. I have rarely used it on battery power, but it was always fine when I did, until a day or two ago. I had opened the case to replace the boot SSD with a bigger one, and after that was the first time I had a problem with running on battery. I thought maybe I had accidentally pulled the internal battery connector, but checked, unplugged and replugged it, but no joy. I still don't understand why disabling the ACPI battery control, restarting, then enabling it again would cure the problem. But it did! You saved me a lot of further expense and grief. Thanks!

@AskaComputerGeek

Thanks for watching! It's possible your battery is failing but also likely that your battery is having trouble talking to Windows. If you have already followed the steps in the video then next try the Battery troubleshooter (search for this in the Windows search bar) and run the diagnostic. Next, make sure that your BIOS and chipset are updates. Next power down your laptop completely, hold the power button for 30 seconds, and plug in the adapter while holding the button and start the computer. If these don't work, disconnect your battery internally, hold the power button down for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try charging your battery and using it again!

@Bamlak ChernetHI.. i gave my laptop to service center, they check and said that it is due update issue. so first try the method said in video and just check your pc is up to date or not. still you have any issue means the problem may be with your battery check the battery condition and try to replace it if it is damaged.

I was worried about this but i did a little experiment and found a fix for me HOPEFULLY IT HELPS YOU : I turned off ACPI and plugged off the charger and my laptop was working on battery then i waited for a minute or two and turned on ACPI again. It helped me hopefully it helps you. Tip: wait for your battery to drain out before charging it again
@AskaComputerGeek
@AskaComputerGeek 3 года назад
I think the person is saying to disable the ACPI, let the battery drain completely, then turn it back on and try to charge again.

hi, Josh! Thank you for making the video. I have some questions related to, and out of this topic. 1. I have an old laptop (ASUS X550J from 2015) that I use as a secondary storage, and it will only work when plugged in. The battery symbol exists and it shows "0%, plugged in" when I hover the cursor to it. Is it safe to disable the Adapter as you showed starting in 01:52 ? My biggest worry is that it'd just shut off and couldn't be turned on again, so I haven't tested the method yet. 2. The primary laptop I use (ASUS ROG GA502D) seems to be draining battery when I checked the Battery Health Report via CMD. Is there a way to somehow fix the health of the battery? If so, how do I do it? If not, how long, or when is the time I should get a replacement battery? 3. Do you happen to have any social media we can follow to connect to you more directly? I somehow struck upon this channel and I'm glad I did. Your explanations in your videos are very concise. I look forward to your reply. Cheers, PlasmaDrone P.S: Keep up the good work! I wish you all the best for your channel to grow. It's very top notch :D :D

Thank you for your kind words - I'm glad I can help! As for your issues... 1. I would say that if it is working when plugged in there should be no issue disabling the adapter on that laptop. Worst case you can always boot up in safe mode and revert back. 2. Are you saying that you disabled the battery adapter and you are seeing that the battery is draining? Or just wondering, in general, to protect the battery's health? Laptop batteries last, on average about 500 full cycles of discharge/charge and the most surefire way to prevent battery degradation would be to physically disconnect it/remove it. Let me know if that didn't answer your question fully. 3. I don't but maybe I should! Not sure what the best platform would be....any ideas?
@plasmadrone3123
@plasmadrone3123 3 года назад
@@AskaComputerGeek thankies for the replies, Josh! 1. Very well. I'll try test it when I have the time, then. How do I boot in Safe Mode, tho? 2. No, I didn't disable anything on it. I just noticed the draining, and reaffirmed it after checking it via CMD. Unfortunately the only way to remove the ASUS ROG GA502D's battery is to disassemble the bottom part, which isn't very ideal compared to the laptops where you could just snap it off. 3. I think FB and Twitter would be a good start :) :)

Directions for safe mode: support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-10-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234 Yeah taking out internal batteries isn't ideal and should only be done if you don't plan on using the battery for a while. With that said, it's not terribly difficult. My latest video on fixing blank screens goes through the process in pretty good detail.

That's a good tip. Other sites are saying to DELETE the power driver (or all of them), cycle the machine on and off, and let Windows auto-install it/them at start-up. I'm a LOT more comfortable just disabling and re-enabling the driver, unless I want to clone my entire machine to another SSD first -- as I don't want to mess up my machine if something goes wrong when trying this. By the way, to me it's outrageous how PC makers are now making it so hard for folks to self-repair, doing things like making the battery unaccessable externally, or even having a soldered wire attaching the battery to the mother board. I've been buying Dell E6430's and DellE6440's refurbished from corporate lease machines in good shape for CHEAP (like $150 to $200) from reliable refurbishers. (If you get them this cheap, they'll generally have a small old HDD). Since those (2011 to 2014 vintage for those two models) are SUPER EASY to maintain re both the hard drive or SSD and the battery, the repair manuals are online, etc. they're ideal for users to upgrade the data drive (two screws, and slide the bay), replace the battery (easy external access with two slides and no screws), etc. THANK YOU for videos like this. Between you great RU-vid video makers, and outfits like Dell willing (in the past) to have easily maintainable PC's and online documentation, PC owners can keep some old PC's going without spending a fortune or being a techie or mechanical type.

Make sure that your machine is completely updated (Windows, BIOS, chipset) first. If it still doesn't work then you could disconnect your battery internally, press the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect the battery, and try again.
