@@HASHEAVEN I grew my trees almost 40 years ago! It's a real pleasure to see all the life in the trees. They'll be cutting down more with the 5G. The best homes are the ones that are under trees in my opinion. I always believed a tree won't fall down on you if you love it! I like to think God gives them a chance to decide which way they want to fall. From watching lots of hurricanes he always seemed to fall away from the homes they love or should I say that love them.

Everyone keeps saying "add ice" but it would melt in a matter of minutes. I know because I'm from Arizona and very familiar with the "swamp cooler" idea, and have had many in the past. This really looks like an easy build and although I now live in a house with an $8000 A/C unit, I still prefer swamp coolers. Right now humidity is up in Arizona so swamp coolers aren't effective, but I may consider this for my bedroom at night beginning in mid September when it dries out again. It's too bad how A/C has taken over swamp coolers in Arizona, but I always hear the same reasons: A/C units have become much more efficient, the air outside is dirty and not healthy anymore to breath, A/C units require less maintenance. I still think the feel of moist air is so much nicer than the artificial chill of A/C units.

Update to my previous comments: I built this using 1/2" PVC that was on hand and an 18-gal Rubbermaid container i had. I used a 6" desk fan (on sale), a water cooler pump from Wal Mart, $14.88, a water cooler pad and a half hour before I go to bed, I add 2 blue ice and 2 pro pak "freezies" to the water. 10 min later, I turn the cooler on. The pump and fan are plugged in to an extension cord because the unit is on the far side of my RV bedroom. The fan has a three-prong plug, which is plugged into an adapter (dollar general), then into the ext. cord. 2 nights ago, I recorded 90 degrees inside the bedroom at bedtime. 1/2 hr after turning the cooler on, it was 80 degrees- comfy and sleep-able. I now need to get a timer so it's not too cold when the outside temp drops. Where am I? I'm in the Four Corners area of New Mexico, near Farmington. This thing does work- my total expense has been around $30. If I bought everything new, it would be around $50, still less than half of a commercial water cooler/evaporative cooler. Thank you again for this design- it's a lifesaver!

We use to cool our entire house with a full size roof swamp cooler. That was in northern California where the air was fairly dry most of the year. Once the rice patty farmers flooded their fields, the humidity was too high for the swamp cooler to be very effective. Most people don't realize swamp coolers in dry climets will reduce the air temp indoors by up to 20 degrees for a fraction of the cost of AC units. Plus the humid air causes dust to drop to the floor, keeping the air cleaner and the house much more dust free. The best way to use a swamp cooler is to pull dry air from outside from a window or in our case the swamp cooler was on the roof, and crack a window at the other end of the house which pushes the hotter humidified air out of the house. I had a similar roof mounted unit in Las Vegas. It kept the mobile home I was renting at 76 to 78 degrees while outside it was 98+.

Todd Crenshaw newer air conditioners are extremely efficient and their electricity costs are similar to run as swamp coolers. Swamp coolers work great in small homes with little to no insulation. But in larger we'll insulated homes air conditioners work best. Modern ac units have variable fan speeds and compressors that will keep your home a constant temperature.
@MrToddsCorner
@MrToddsCorner 6 лет назад
TheJ602 I beg to disagree that newer AC units have similar electricity costs to swamp coolers. For one you're using two motors to run fans, not just one. There is a blower motor in the evaporator and one in the condenser. Second is the third motor in the compressor itself. The home I grew up in was a four bedroom, two bath, home with a large living room and a den (family room these days) with over 4500 square feet and fully insulated. A swamp cooler kept the house cool. High seer AC units are very economical electricaly compared to past AC units, that there is no doubt. However, anything above a 14/16 seer AC and the purchase price starts getting unreasonable unless you plan to stay in the home forever. High seer AC is very much like a swimming pool here in Dallas, it adds almost nothing to the value of the house. Insulation has the same effect on both. No insulation and the prevention of transfer of heat/cooling is lost. Good insulation prevents this in both, just in a different way. The only requirement for swamp coolers is to have exit points for the moist air (windows furthest away from the swamp cooler entry are left slightly open). In my bedroom my window was left just 1/4 or less open. I could actually put my hand by the crack and feel the air escaping. Now do I have a swamp cooler here in Dallas? No freaking way. The humidity here prevents a swamp cooler from doing anything other than creating a sauna! I did see a 1/3rd drop in my electric bill when I had the original 8 seer 15 year old AC unit replaced with a modern 14 seer unit. Though I saw a nice reduction in my electric bill, going down to about $2 a day that in no way compares to the dime or maybe even a quarter in worse case a day for running the motor in a swamp cooler. When I retire on my ranch in Colorado I'll only have a swamp cooler. It makes no sense to have AC at 7,000 feet in the high desert air. I have a background in HVAC so while we may disagree, my experience tells me there is a large difference in running costs and efficiency.

@MrToddsCorner
@MrToddsCorner 5 лет назад
Candy Gurl Fewer and fewer are saving for retirement and their dreams. I've been blessed with how my parents taught me to work hard, save money for retirement, and then of course finding the property I've always wanted. My 40 acre ranch is at 7,000 feet elevation so A/C would be truly a waste of power. My aunt and uncle live near by and when speaking to them last night, they said mornings are in the high 40's. Love that mountain cool air. Before someone says yeah but the winters you freeze, well I love the cold. Dallas, TX is way too hot. Plus you can always put clothes on to warm up. You can only take off so much before the picture gets ugly at my age!

* Good idea, but certainly not a new idea. My portable evaporative cooler broke down - pump failed, fan motor failed. The remaining box was useful holding the pad and the basin to hold the water similar to what he shows. Important to be sure that you build this carefully, otherwise you will have water splashing onto the floor. You can buy a water pump for about $30 more or less. Keep with a low output pump - too much water causes excess spray. Holes should not be very large. Experiment. You can always drill the holes larger. Use good quality pads. Use a pad that can be thoroughly moist. The water should flow through the pad from top to bottom, not splash out - another reason to be certain that your pump is not too powerful. The pad that he shows should last at least four seasons, maybe more. Some pads last only one season - usually the aspen pads. Also be certain that you use a fan with a high RPM. Cover the back of the fan to protect the fan motor from the water. You can also try a standing fan that pans back and forth across the cooling area. You can start with cooled water by putting ice or dry ice in the bin. Be careful about dry ice - try it only if you know how to handle it. Otherwise, stay with ice from your freezer. *

I live in FL. I would not use ice cube but instead use ice packs or plastic bottles which contain frozen water which can be reused. Also, use distilled water and it will keep those 1/16th inch holes from clogging up and also the pad will stay cleaner.

It may be cheaper to buy a new pad every year rather then distilled water.. . uses a lot of water.

The environment expose water will get hot sooner or later if you'll not gonna use ice , maybe insulating that water supply portion give you more longer cool air. Thanks for the video i like the idea it's cheaper and faster to build .

hi there. with this type of cooling system you don't need any ice. the evaporative effect works on the water in the container too. after running it for 10 mins or so the water temperature (of the water in the container) will drop to the same temperature as the output air. it's pretty cool how that happens.

If you have solar, and boondocking, you might be able to use a high velocity 12 volt fan. Only thing is that they’re smaller.
