The entire island is on big volcano with multiple vents and calderas. Earthquakes and toxic gas venting are common when magma is on the move. Be safe 🎃

Amazing to think, just as in Yellowstone, you are walking on top of magma. We have to disconnect a bit or we would be high-tailing it off the island or whatever place. I guess we are all walking on magma, just magma at different depths.

50 years is approximately the time before the last eruption. A blink of an eye for the volcano. They are truly a humbling thing.

Lucky for the island residents this magma chamber is deep enough and small in size under the ground that it won't collapse the island downwards into a caldera. You don't want to end up like the Yellowstone area of Wyoming ! Yes it will sometimes get enough pressure built up to make another volcano in an unknown number of years but it may be slightly to the south, on the island where the hotspot currently is, along the fairly deep Cumbre Vieja rift. Be safe Ben and take care.

Dear Bushcraft Bear, this is facinating news, the situation is evolving, mostly in slow motion (compared to us) with occasional bursts of activity - eg eruptions. I'm sure it's similar in many places, eg Iceland or in areas where earthquakes often occur like Italy. Great that such information is known, as it is great that the recent eruption didn't directly cause any casualties (of course there was much material damage, but with time this can be made good). Your reporting was excellent, I have visited other Canary Islands but not this one, would love to do so in the next year or so. Take care and thank you for your videos.
