I didn't think I was interested in pinhole cameras, until now. I've been thinking about getting back into film photography, and black and white film processing. It's been a couple of decades or so since I last had a darkroom set up. I was a novice at best back then. With the wealth of online resources to learn from these days, I might stand a chance to get past the basics and learn to make some descent prints.

Great video, thanks! I have a pinhole lens for my Intrepid 4x5 and I shot maybe a dozen sheets with it. It seems to work well, I need to get out and use it more. The enlarger back for the Intrepid looks interesting, it could give me more space in the darkroom. I am using two different enlarger now, one is a 6x7 dichroic and the other is a 4x5 condenser.

I wouldn't swap my Durst out. The intrepid worked well but I'd rather have the camera in a case ready for photography than keep setting it up in my darkroom.

I shot my first ever 4x5 negatives with a 3D-printed Box Turtle pinhole camera (.stl found on Thingiverse) as I was still waiting for my Graflex to arrive from the USA. I already has some film and I wanted to practice handling and developing it. It's an extremely simple camera, just two boxes, one slid into the other, with a pinhole made of a piece of aluminium tape pierced with a needle and a shutter held In place by magnets. Virtually free (if you have a 3D-printer) and doesn't even need a film holder. I got a couple of pictures, they were quite underexposed though as I was not yet familiar with the quirky exposure characteristics of Fomapan 400. But it's an interesting tecnique, maybe I'll try it again at some time.

An enjoyable video. Thanks! Could you make a video comparing image quality between the different formats. 135 vs 120 vs 4x5? It would help me to decide what format would suit me the best…..
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 6 месяцев назад
Thanks. To do that I'd need to shoot the same scene on the three different formats to find the obvious. More silver on the film equals more detail to print. Best way to decide what format to shoot is knowing what you want to shoot most of the time. I.E Scapes, Street, portraits. Then decide what's important, cost over quality. 36 frames on a 35mm camera, 15 on a medium format (645). Medium format will always give more detail on an enlarged print. More so with Large format. Also comfort. Medium Format cameras can be larger and heavier if you want to carry it about all day. Mostly for street I shoot 35mm as I get more photos for my money and I don't mind the print looking a bit rough around the edges. Scapes on the other hand I'll shoot medium format to get more detail on enlarged prints. Hope this helps 👍 it's actually a good subject. Maybe I will 😊

Well done Roger beautiful prints as always!! A question about the bromide drag, is it caused because of lack of agitation? Or very slow agitation?
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 2 года назад
Here is what I replied to another comment Abdulla. "You'll get a good explanation on wiki for bromide drag. Usually happens when a film is not inverted enough or on stand development. So as the film sits the developer gets trapped in the sprocket holes and slowly drags down the film causing the uneven development. I don't get it often though. So I don't know why it happened here."

I think if you press and hold the black buttons on the Intrepid Enlarger control it will advance in whole second increments. If that's wrong, then there is some other way to do it, but I know it does it... 🙂 I'll dig mine out and give it a go if that is wrong.

Could you do a more in-depth video about the 35mm pinhole? I'm tempted to buy one, I have the 120 pinhole by Lerouge and I love using it but it seems like the 35mm one would add even more portability. I was just curious how it comes and how you load it I suppose, does it come with an empty cassette inside? I'd love to use it in a city

An interesting video. I have a LEROUGE 135 pinhole camera and have had the scratching issue, as well as fluff from the light stop material where the film goes into the cassette. I have only been developing film for a short time and would like to know what development (bromide) drag is. I would like to go to a 6x6 pinhole camera but I would have to get the negatives developed at the lab as I do not have the ability yet to scan anything larger than 135. I am looking at the LEROUGE and ONDU (which has a filter holder). Love your work. Cheers

Thanks for the cool birthday video! LOL Love your pinhole shots. Question....if you shoot on paper instead of film with the pinhole...do you develop the print as normal? Ya I know you end up with a negative but can make a positive from it. Was just wondering . Thanks so much for all your videos. Entertaining as well as very educational. I'm on a very fixed income so cannot afford to buy cameras but I'm gonna try making a pinhole for 5x7 paper and see what happens.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 2 года назад
The paper is much less sensitive than film so probably around 6 ISO! So looooong exposures needed. Yes it will be a negative. Which you can easily scan and invert. I wouldn't know how to make a transparencies from it. Maybe take a photo using the DSLR and then print onto transparent sheet? Great idea making one. I'm sure there is lots of info online
@tumaprints

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I saw on another channel today and the photographer made a positive from the paper negative by placing an unexposed sheet face up then covered it with the paper negative and flashed it for a couple seconds....must be using fiber base I am assuming.

Quick question (hopefully not a dumb one). What is "developing drag?"
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 2 года назад
Commonly known as Bromide drag Adam. Can occur during a stand or semi stand or not enough inversions during development. In this case the bromide ions got trapped in the sprocket holes of the film and as the film was sitting in the developer with no inversions the developer from the sprocket holes slid down the film with gravity and caused those streaks. You'd probably get a much more technical explanation of you Google "bromide drag". Hope that helps.

Hey Roger, you ever have problems with FP4? I bought two new rolls, developed at different times with different batches of developer and fixer, but ended up with the same spattering of dark spots most noticeable in the sky. Ruined my first roll through the ETRSi!
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 2 года назад
Not with FP4 Dane. Fomapan, I have. Possibly a manufacturing defect but I imagine Ilford would usually be quite vocal with any batch issues online as many would be having the same issue. Or maybe a storage/transportation issue.
@danem2215
@danem2215 2 года назад
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I found a few forums and they said Ilford claimed it as lacquer and backing paper issues. Ilford is going to send some replacement rolls, which is nice. I got black spots on my first two rolls of Foma. Not sure if a thorough pre-rinse is why they stopped forming, but I haven't seen them since. That antihalation layer is so stubborn on Foma!
