Large Rail Ding Repair Polyester Surfboard

In this video we are fixing a large rail ding in a urethane core/polyester resin (standard) surfboard.
Because the board was glassed with an orange tint we wanted to see if we could fix it without removing the glass skin in the damaged area, however that was not possible.
The steps to the repair are:
1. Remove the damaged glass, anything that is not bonded to the core and is broken or shattered. Cut back and sand as needed.
2. Mask off around damaged area
3. Fill damaged area with ding repair putty • How to Make Ding Repai...
4. Sand putty back to match board
5. Mask around area to be glassed, this area should extend roughly an inch past the damaged area.
6. Cap damaged area with 4 or 6 oz fiberglass fabric
7. Sand edges to blend, then hot coat repaired area
8. Sand to blend repaired area with board
9. Apply surfboard sealer over repaired area or if it is a gloss and polish, buff repair to blend with board.

Hello; I am a surfboard builder since the 80s. I want to say that are others approaches to that type of repair. Even more in a board like that with resin color work. Then; you slightly sanded the sanded gloss and hot coat. That is not right. No matter the approach, is needed to sand the gloss or sanded gloss (like that board); then the filler coat; then 2 of the lamination layers (you have 3 in that area) You need to do it in steps and about 1 inch or more (depending the type of repair) wider than the damaged area.

cheers bro! ...asking for a pro tip.... is ok to use a water based acrylic spray to paint a PU foam?

@@nachoelias6882 Hi; yes; all water based are not a problem then with the resin Tempera is what most use. Green most times is a complicated color regarding the resin work later. Reds in some brands too. May be you can do a test with the colors that you have?

What if i want my ding same color of board could i use pigment in that putty?

That would be an option, probably easier though to carefully spray the sanded putty with paint to match and then glass over it with clear glass. Color matching is skilled work.

@@FiberglassSupply i agree, but i think if one could play w color to match it closer it would definitely look better. I'll try it. I got a board a just dinged so I'll give it a try.

I have a red fiber glass long board with a few dings in it this was very helpful! But how would I go about adding the red color back In To the repaired area properly?

If the original lamination was tinted or pigmented you would add tint or pigment to the resin when you lam the patches on. Be warned it is tricky to match. If it is painted then I usually find a spray paint that matches as closely as possible and paint over the repair feathering into the existing paint.
