Viewers should know that Marine Heavy-lift Cranes are those which can lift 1,500 tons or more. This crane that is now on scene and being touted as such a capable tool for the job ahead of this salvage operation is simply a medium-lift crane and of course the largest available (not under contract or performing other work) on the East Coast. The "heavy lifters" can handle loads in excess of 14,000 tons but are also so large that they may not be able to clear the channel bottom at only 40 to 50 feet deep.

My job is linked to port activity. In fact, every single job in Trade Point Atlantic is linked to the Port's Activity! Container Port is one of our main carriers that bring us shipments from the Port! I suppose I will be seeing far less of their driver's in the coming weeks dropping trailers until the Port is re opened. I have been down in Myrtle Beach on vacation while this occurred. I drove back and fourth over the bridge quite often, and my wife commuted over it for work for over 15 years! Condolences to the families of those workers :(

There's a 700 foot wide channel and it's stood for more than fifty years. Most bridges don't have concrete islands in front of the piers. New ones probably all will, but that's thousands of bridges that would have to be upgraded.

@@GWNorth-db8vn The bridges where I live are older than this bridge. In the 70s, they got reports about this type of thing happening. The city built extra concrete support around the pillars. Because that wasn't enough, they built rock islands around the concrete. The city went a step further and made it so no boat of substantial size, is allowed to go through our harbour without tugboat assistance. Especially, while it is mandatory for the local pilot to have control of the vessel. I live in a city that has 400,000 inhabitants compared to Baltimores 500, 000. I live in a country that has lower tax brackets than America, with 1/8 of the amount of people paying taxes. Yet we can afford to make our bridges stronger, and implement safe use of tugboats while the local pilot is in control. Plus, we have universal healthcare. So, it's not because the un-United States can't afford it. It is just the fact government doesn't care if its people die, due to their lax infrastructure. Look at the powerlines in this video. They have more protection than the bridge had. That is pathetic. Those powerlines are worth more to the government than a bridge, with people on it. Seems a little backwards to me.

I don't think the Port of Baltimore has had any real attention in decades. Did you ever see the show "The Wire"? There was a whole season of that show about the Port of Baltimore and the whole premise was that the port was so underfunded that the Stevedores union there had to resort to corrupt dealings with an international drug cartel in order to be able to lobby politicians(who were also very corrupt, it being Baltimore and all...) to get the harbor dredged so they could get more ships into the port so they could have better job security and hire more people. In the end they got busted and the harbor never got dredged. I don't know if any of that happened in REAL life but I bet the harbor still hasn't been dredged.

Here's what happened. When the power went down the pilot lost steerage as it is a fly by wire system. He then called for full astern. That is the plume of black smoke from the funnel. That was a mistake. When the ship engaged full astern it began what we call a prop walk. The stern moves to port and the bow moves to starboard. There was too much way on the ship to stop before the bridge. It was doing 8kts prior to the power outage and 6kts when it hit. If the pilot had not engaged astern it would have continued on its course through the middle of the span.
