Yes Hip-Hop is a very popular and highly succesful music-genre and its definetly not "unimportant", but it's not the most succesful. (There is also a geographical spin on a lot of genres, don't know where you got that from)

You don’t even hear pop music unless it’s coming from the radio or a TV commercial. Rap is everywhere. What I said before still stands. No other genre of music has as many subcategories as rap does. It’s in quite literally every country, even far out European ones that you wouldn’t even expect to like that music. The same can’t be said for pop.
