Jonathan - really appreciate all your videos. In terms of hook and loop sand paper testing, I believe there is one absolutely key aspect to the longevity / cost-benefit analysis that never gets tested: the disc's ability to stick to the sander after multiple on/offs. As an example, I purchased the Cubitron multipacks months ago and agree they were the best in terms of removal. But, its common to switch between discs (e.g. 80, 120, 220) throughout the sanding process. I found that the Cubitron discs would just fly off even my 2 new sanders after 5-10 "attach/remove/reattach" cycles. Didn't matter how long each disc was used. Have never experienced this with any other disc. All tests I've seen simply leave the disc attached throughout the testing process to determine grams removed. I think in a real world scenario where pads are removed and reattached, the cost of the Cubitron sky-rockets as the sanding side remains great but the disc is unusable because the backing will no longer stick to the sander. Due to this, I would not buy another 3M disc until this issue is addressed. From a cost-benefit perspective, this issue renders the Cubitron no better than the ones that remove the least material- unless you keep the 3M disc on your sander and never remove it. As such, I think testing this fundamental aspect of any disc is every bit as important in any cost-benefit test - and make that suggestion for your next such event. Many thanks for another great video.

Great comment. That is my big problem, sandpaper not sticking. I would also like to know how long each piece lasts before it's not useable. These tests didn't seem to figure out how many total minutes of sanding each brand lasts for.
@markolmstead4709
@markolmstead4709 9 месяцев назад
Use a backing pad protector and you won’t have that problem anymore. The problem with the mesh paper is the hook and loop from the sanding pad are exposed to the wood surface and get ground down due to friction and heat, which decreases their ability to hold the paper.

It would be interesting to get a temp reading of the discs after each 5 minute interval to see if het really does build up more on the film backed paper
@richs5422
@richs5422 3 года назад
Good idea, but it must be done at the same time interval after sanding. The robot should be programmed to present the disc to an IR camera, and the camera should be triggered by the robot controller. That way, roughly the same amount of cooling would happen to each disc. The pictures would have more data than just one temperature reading, as they would show hot spots (if any existed). Comparing pictures taken after each 5 minute run might also show how hot spots build up (or that they don't).
@hunnyhh
@hunnyhh 3 года назад
@@richs5422 High temperature is the major cause for short abrasive life. In wood it causes natural oils and resins to plastify and clog the abrasive. 3M XTRACT discs sharply cut and are designed to immediately extract the dust from the process so it cannot rub on the sanding interface which generates heat. No heat = no loading/clogging = long life+high level of sustained cut and finish according to the selected grade.

This was very interesting and revealing. I am retired and enjoy wood working as my hobby. I have been using Mirka Abranet for a number of years and am totally sold on mesh. I like being able to take an air hose to the discs and blow off most of the dust which extends the usable life of the disc. The traditional solid discs get loaded up with the dust and cannot be cleaned adequately to keep using them. But...I will definitely look at the 3M Cubitron Xtract Ceramic and order a few to try. And it looks cool, too..!!

First of all, thank you for taking the time to get us all these numbers! It's handy to have some sort of quantitative measurement (grams removed over period of time is excellent); however, I've realized it's worth considering the intention of use for the sandpapers. I've just tested a small subset of discs on a number of wood panels that I'm preparing for finishing -- Mirka's Abranet (+ their Ace version), the original Festool Granit, and this new 3M cubitron product, which is significantly cheaper than the other two. To its credit, the 3M does remove more, and last longer. It's an excellent product if you want to remove wood (e.g. shaping). From the details provided by 3M for this product, they've spent a lot of time developing a grain that cuts into the substrate. However, to finish and smooth out wood in particular, I'm leaning toward the Mirka product. My tests are highly subjective, simply because I don't have the means to measure beyond touch. The Mirka product leaves the surface significantly less 'hairy' than the 3M. I'm guessing the 3M grains cut deeper scores into the wood, whereas the Mirka product cuts across the surface of the wood. For discs of the same grit, 3M cubitron is noticeably more 'grabby' when finishing. This would be consistent with 3M's descriptions, and bear out in the data you've provided regarding wood removed. For a workflow, specifically in regard to finishing, perhaps it'd be a good option to use 3M to do the rough smoothing, then finishing up past certain grits (120?) with Mirka or similar.

I love that you guys are doing this kind of work. I hope you can encourage others to repeat this and/or do similar experimentation. I don't think you could get much better data, but you can always have more! I do doubt whether heat is making much difference here; the main way in which heat is the "enemy of sharpness" has to do with how metals react to heat, and it generally has much less to do with carbide/oxide/ceramics. Not to mention that 'sharpness' itself is of limited relevance to abrasive cutting - probably almost all of these differences deal with clogging and adhesion of the abrasive to the substrate. I'm sure the fancy cubic grain and other sharpness related things still have an effect, but it doesn't matter if your paper is clogged!

Great review of all of these sandpapers. If you look at current prices now, the Diablo sandnet is much cheaper at around $0.50 per sheet if you buy the 50+10 pack. That actually makes it $0.008 per gram removed (0.5/64) . This would mean that the more readily available sandnet would be number 2 and for some people the better buy since they can go to Home Depot and get it rather immediately.

There are other reason for not being on the P scale. Mineral composition is one of them. But as far as what grit is on the paper it has been proven that the Cubitron II is nearly 100% the same grit, which is insane. Most companies are an 80/20 or even a 60/20/20 split. The reason it cuts so much better is largely due to the mineral.

I don't quite understand how i can get such dramatically different results. I typically use Mirka Autonet but recently bought a box of 3m Xtract and the 3m discs didn't hold up even remotely as good as the Mirka. The 3m had great cut at the start but really fell off afterward. The Mirka held its initial great cut for far longer allowing me to get much more sanding done. The Mirka holds up so well i can put it on my dual action car polisher and wet sand metal and even glass to get a scratch out of it like i did recently.

I got the 3M cubitron mesh as a sampler with a recent order from your shop or Taylor Tools, cant remember, but anyway, it blew me away with its performance but its finish quality is insane too: the 320+ makes a surface that feels more like a 600 grit. I'm a convert from my faithful Diablo

You can't do a comparison with set Z axis points on your robot and variable board thickness. Even a few thousandths of an inch variation changes the load. You need a force sensor on your end of arm tooling.

This was fantastic and I ordered new paper! I would love to see a similar test for sand paper available for drum sanding. I'm no professional, but the paper I get for my drum sander is crap!

This is a dream test for a floor sander like myself; A lot of us in Australia actually use zirconia papers for our orbitals, along with oxide and ceramic Although I far prefer ceramic over zirconia alot of sanding guides from machine manufacturers recommend rough/intermediate with ceramic then fine sand with zirconia (Which confuses me as I find zirconia way too aggressive) Would be great to see this test with some of those in a test though - One I believe you could get your hands on are the SIA ones Norton red heat Norton Blaze Both cost a fortune, both are meant to deliver great results. But since finding Cubi II a year ago I have not looked back Just wish they made sanding belts for my big bertha!

Great video! Great experiment! It'd be interesting to reorder the existing results with a cost-to-use metric, which incorporates both the sandpaper cost and the manpower cost. For manpower cost, estimate wages of a person who has to remove N grams of material, where N is the average amount of the material that someone would need to remove in an average project. I think that cost-to-use metric might push down the Klingspor - Dewalt section and bring up some of the more expensive but higher quality disks. You can probably do all of that with the existing data you have. Next, another video idea, how long should you use a disk before replacing it? Based on the friability measurements and the cost-to-use, each paper type probably has an ideal replacement window. This probably varies with different grits, so maybe take some of the top ones and come up with ideal replacement rates based to maximize cost-to-use for that brand/grit. I think it's a good thing that your experiments bring up so many ideas for further research. That's the mark of an actually interesting experiment!

Cost per gram removed relates to product purchase price. Grams removed per disc relates to shop time/labor cost. That can be a more important factor than cost per gram removed. In this test, 3M Xtract is tops in both categories. That's darned impressive!

I would be interested in seeing some data on the DuraGRIT carbide sanding disks, I’ve heard some very impressive things about them. I imagine that the cost per grams removed would be pretty bad using the same 5 x 5 minute test used here, but over its whole lifetime it could be something.

Great job! Just ordered a couple Xtract packs from your link. I like to support the smaller companies like Serious Grit and Maverick whenever possible. It’d be cool to have a follow up like this ranking the smaller groups in this space. Thanks!

I bought the 3M Cubitron last year when you did the very 1st comparison as it was a solid test. Never buying them again. I went through the grits on a project I was doing: 80, 120, 150, 180 & 220, EACH disc wound up flying off the sander after about 10min of sanding on each disc. They no longer stick but I know they're still "good". I switched back to Diablos ceramic h&l. Idk if I got a "defective" pack but they were a super disappointment. They started off really strong but now I just have them in a drawer out of sight but if I need to sand by hand, I know they're there.

Thanks for this great video. I guess my only comment is cost/gram removed is not a measure of time saved. It's a value comparison. Since your time intervals were a constant it really becomes total grams removed as the true indicator of potential time saved in your shop sanding. As I have probably purchased enough Festool discs to last a decade of hobbyist work, I was happy to see Festool did ok in total grams removed. If I run out of a certain grit I will definitely try the cubitorn mesh next.

Just looking a the pictures: the winner has (much) less than half the amount of sand particles, compared to the the others, considering the amount of open area. So glue plays has a huge importance here! Going for the the 3m winner, not doubt! An endurance test would probably be very interesting!

All very interesting but as usual for US markets only. I can't find anywhere in Australia that sells the Number one Xtract. It isn't even listed on what purports to be the 3M Australia web site. The cost per gram removed with the Xtract disc blows out the window when adding in the outrageous freight costs US Carriers charge. Ok if cost is no object but it usually is for the average woodworker.
