The LaRoshes have been farming here for over 100 years. This video chronicles the highlight of the farming year, harvest time for wheat. But the process began 9 months earlier, in the fall. The wheat is planted using a seeding drill. It sprouts up, then goes dormant as the cold sets in and stays dormant through the winter (hence the name, winter wheat).
In spring, the wheat greens up again and continues growing. Rain and moisture are very important during this time. Eventually the heads appear with wheat kernels on them. By early summer, the green wheat fields give way to a golden color as the heat and wind dry the wheat out. Finally, it is harvest time!
This video depicts two John Deere combine harvesters cutting the wheat. When their bins get full, they dump into a grain cart pulled by a tractor. The grain cart dumps the wheat into one of two semis/tractor trailers. These trucks haul the wheat to elevators at the Coop in nearby towns, where it is stored for eventual delivery to market.
