Amazing game, great series, one of the greatest rivarlies in NBA history, superstar players on both sides... Of course, Celtics won this series 4-3 after winning games 6 and 7 with 3 point margine COMBINED!

I saw this game at the Boston Garden with my Big Brother and my Dad, even though we only had two tickets. My Dad had a broken ankle and was using crutches, but borrowed a wheelchair for the day. Men in Wheelchairs got in free to the Garden without a ticket, as long as they are with someone with a ticket. My Dad sat in a special section with 7 other guys in wheelchairs and when Celtics took the final lead, my Dad *jumped* out of his wheelchair 😅

Bird was a fucking beast. The guy was everywhere and could do everything. What those who never saw Bird play need to realize is that Bird played this hard EVERY night, be it early in the regular season or down 3-1 in a playoff series fighting to survive. The guy never took any night off, which is yet another one of his intangibles that don't show up in the statistics.

He kept himself in great physical shape. Ran and shot all afternoon before a game so he had gas in the tank in the 4th quarter. He never stopped moving and it was hard for a bigger man to stay with him defensively. Even if you're in his face, he had that 1-step-back jumper.

People tend to forget how great the 76ers were during the 80s. If not for Bird they probably would have had at least one more, even two more championships. The East was packed with great teams for the entire decade. The Lakers had a cakewalk in comparison.

Yes the Western conference was run and gun. The Lakers were the only team out there test played defense.

People don't always realize how tough the East was during Bird's time. I remember Boston having a much harder road than the Lakers in the playoffs. Especially early-mid 80's.

@Mike Johnson The Bulls had to beat Magic to win their first ring. They also went through Isiah,Dumars and Rodman, Shaq & Penny, Ewing, Stockton & Malone, Payton & Kemp, Barkley, Drexler plus many many more.

@Mike Johnson Magic was only in his 10th season. Worthy his 7th. How can that possibly be watered down or over the hill??? If you use the rationale of playing in their prime well the Bulls didn't hit their prime until the 90's. If you watched the Jordan documentary you will see how rubbish the 80's Bull side was.You're obviously a die hard Lakers and 80's fan so there is no point even continuing this conversation.

What a beast Bird was on the offensive glass (especially in the early years). I doubt there was ever anyone better at grabbing an offensive rebound, pump faking, and getting the and one. Just as lethal with either hand near the basket. His physical toughness and high IQ, combined with his ambidexterity and ball faking prowess make him in my opinion the best “put backer” in NBA history. Miss the physicality of 80s hoops

The celtics lakers games are legendary but people forget just how epic the early 80s celtics 76ers games were.

I'd say from 1980 to 2000, the East ALWAYS had some kind of intense rivalry. Especially from 80-95. The Sixers & Celtics from about 80-85. Then those epic wars between the Celtics & Pistons from 85-91. Then from 88-91, it was Jordan & the Bulls going through (& getting past) the Pistons to begin their dynasty. From about 89-96, it was Bulls vs Knicks, especially 91-93. I think Charles Smith is STILL trying to get that rebound from the '93 ecf lol. And who can forget the Pacers- Knicks battles with Reggie Miller clutching his throat (indicating the Knicks were "choke artists.) Man, 80's-90's NBA was epic.

6:32 Bird with the nifty above-the-rim layup and then immediately looks to defend the inbound pass. I feel like most players today would have gone for the emphatic dunk, and hung on the rim, and in the process taken themselves out of position to defend the inbounds pass. Because they value intimidation and showmanship and seem to only focus on each play as its own moment in time, while Bird just wanted to get the ball through the hoop more than his opponent, and was already thinking 2 or 3 plays ahead on how to do just that.

One word: Relentless. Have you ever seen a crowd react this way to one team turning a 1-3 series to 2-3? The level of frenzy for Bird and the Celtics is unbelievable after this game.

This is truly great stuff. You can not only see but hear the intensity of the play and the crowd. Look at the rebounding and physical play! This is what the fans and players loved. Bird and McHale rebounding efforts are the very definition of desire - who wants the ball more? Then go get it!! Love the action - thanks for posting

6:02 Bird all over the place. Starts heading back to play d after the baseline shot. McHale gets the rebound and misses. Bird button hooks at warp speed and takes matters into his own hands.

Larry Bird did it on the boards passing the ball steals n points when he wanted a shot he got it. He is one of those players who could do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted to do it. MVP for the ages.

I guess this shows the main reason old NBA was better: all that intensity. With today's rules, it's almost impossible to have this sort of intensity in a game...
@camoss3724
@camoss3724 3 года назад
One of the most intense and brutal series you'll ever see. Bodies were just literally flying all over the floor in every game. Five of the seven games were decided by two points or less, which just added to the drama. Every possession was critical, and every mistake was magnified. It's no wonder that the Celtics struggled to put away Houston in the Finals; after such an emotionally-charged series against Philly, it was almost natural that they'd experience a letdown in their next series. No one could have maintained that level of intensity forever.

Celtics trailed 3 to 1, and they were able to bounce back and win the series, but you never heard Bird said, that made him the greatest of all time. Just funny how Lebron would proclaim himself goat after winning against GSW, from down 3 to 1 also. Bird is way way better and skilled than Lebron.

At what point did Bird realize that McHale's shot wasn't going to go in and turn around and head back to the basket? 😲 Sort of like his famous rebound of his own shot that he nicely tossed up with his left hand as he was continuing out of bounds. Bird was on his way down court when McHale started to shoot. Then suddenly, poof, he's under the basket, rebound and in.
