The convo IS a lot closer than most ppl (aka Jordanaires) will admit. Nothing triggers a Jordan jock sniffer more than suggesting Larry Legend is the TRUE GOAT. And they REALLY hate it when you bring up the head to head matchups between Larry & MJ….”Larry had all that help” “MJ had no help” What utter BS! Larry’s “help” was not the difference, it was Larry’s playing style! Larry was the ultimate TEAM player & Jordan WASNT. Jordan had Paxson & Oakley & that big center (forget his name) who were all good players! Later he had Scottie too! And the last few games LARRY was playing with a bad back & was slow as anything but STILL won! Give me a break!

And when he was with Larry and Larry saw he was on fire… Larry dished him the rock… he did the same with DJ and Parrish. He was the hand behind McHale beating the Celtics scoring record with 56… a ton of those points were passes from Larry… but then Larry hit 60 just games later… with the help of everyone else. They played a team sport and helped each other on the court.

Think on this: Larry hurt his back in 1985. The pain, according to his doctor should have been enough to end his career, as it wasn't a single injury, but a constant in the rest of his life. He was effectively playing through an injury for the rest of his career. And in the years following the injury to his back, he won multiple MVPs, a Championship, a Finals MVP, put up multiple 50-40-90 seasons, won multiple 3 point contests, and won Olympic Gold. The back half of his career is enough to be in the Hall of Fame. Then add his healthy seasons, and consider that he still had more to give. That's why this man has a case for GOAT.

I’m a big Larry Bird fan but allow me to retort about what you said when they were comparing Celtics and Lakers. I agree with most of what was said but to say Bird had no help against the Lakers? You better check again. The whole starting lineup for Boston were all Hall Of Famers. Ask a lot of the greats of the era about Kevin McHale. One of the greatest post players of all time. Dennis Johnson was the best Defensive player of his era. 8 straight year all defensive player. Robert Parish was a terrific player in an era that had to go up against Moses Malone, Kareem, Ewing. Watch Making The Case The 1986 Greatest Team of All time. Larry Bird made his team better. You need to do some research. Check it out. Thx

This young and extremely ignorant RU-vidr doesn't know hoops like Bo did Nike cross-trainers. Bird had no help against Lakers? That's the dumbest $#!% I've heard since Bron said he was the GOAT. Boston had the greatest front-court (Bird, McHale, Parish) ever assembled. And other than the hall-of-famer you mentioned (DJ) they also had another hall-of-famer (Walton) and an All-Star (Ainge). Kevin McHale looked a lot like Herman Munster but he wasn't a nice monster like Lily's husband. He and Hakeem had the two best back-to-bucket games I haver ever witnessed. No one else was in that discussion: though Philadelphia, Atlanta, Detroit, Houston and a couple of others we certainly dangerous and had their moments. Actually MJ respected Bird a lot. He never won a playoff game against him. MJ was a ball hog that took a long time to learn to play team ball. Jordan fans like to say Jordan had no help but he had a couple of the same teammates through his championship years and they did well. I like Jordan a lot but comparing stats doesn't really show you how good Bird was. Jordan scoring 63 didn't help him win because he took all the shots. Bird trusted his teammates to shoot the ball unlike Jordan. Jordan named himself Black J. Sports writers gave Bird his nicknames.

@@marykuettner752 His supporting cast during those championship years was very different than the one from his early years. He took more shots than anyone else because he was supposed to. Take the 86 matchup against the Celtics. Jordan averaged nearly 44ppg on 50.5% shooting, while the rest of the team shot 44% from the field. If you are over 6% more effective than the rest of the team, maybe you should be taking more shots. Another interesting point is that Jordan led the team in assist rate in the playoffs from his rookie season to his first retirement in 1993. @@marykuettner752 Paxson? Come on now. This is not the deadly and clutch Paxson from the early 90s. This version of him sucked, which is why he wasn't a starter when he got to the Bulls. Gervin played one season for the Bulls, which was his last one. He averaged 5 minutes per game in the playoffs against the Celtics, and averaged 0ppg. To call him a non factor would be an understatement. Woolridge was the only scoring help he had in 85 and 86,but he was an awful defender and didn't do much other than scoring. Oakley was a rookie in 86 and definitely the second best player on the team in 87 and 88. Great rebounder,I'd say an underrated passer, good and physical defender and a subpar scorer. He was used on the offensive end in the 87 playoffs ,attempting nearly 18 shots a game and averaging 20ppg against the Celtics. I wouldn't sleep on McHale because he was an ultra-reliable post player who consistently got the job done. The dude broke the Celtics scoring record with 56 points before Larry took it back with his famous 60-point game, and Charles Barkley has named McHale as the toughest opponent he ever played. It's worth watching some McHale highlights to realize he had brilliant footwork and post moves like a corkscrew, consistently scoring, and he's absolutely 100% comparable to Hakeem in that regard. Yeah, the Lakers admittedly had a better team because prime Magic and Kareem is already a cheat code, on top of having Worthy is almost unfair, but I would argue that the 1986 Celtics is absolutely one of the greatest teams that ever played in the NBA.

Philly won 58 or more games in 5 of those 6 years and the only year they won the division was when they had 65 wins and a championship. They even came in 2nd with 62 wins in 1981. Magic wasn't even necessarily the best player in a couple of his championships. Kareem was. That said, my top 3 are Jordan, Bird, and Magic and the order varies in different conversations

I’m from Kansas and before Bird…I was all in with Wilt Chamberlain…who played at Kansas in Lawrence…KU..the Jayhawks…and he still…after all this time …holds 70 some NBA records..like consecutive 30 point games….consecutive 40 point games….100 points in the game they played in Hershey, PA..in 1962 against the Knicks…and after the game…hitched a ride back to New York with a couple of them…pretending to be asleep in the back seat..he averaged 50.2 PPG that year…not slam dunks…but 12 to 15 foot jump shots…one year led the league in assists…and usually grabbed 25 to 30 rebounds every night…he was a scoring machine..not Jordan…

C's fan and a huge Bird fan. But, did you say he didnt have any help? The 86 team is prob best team ever. McHale was GREAT. Best back to the basket post player ever, and a great defender, Parrish is hugely underrated, He wasnt Kareem of course, but he played him solidly. DJ is hugely underrated by history. A top 5-10 guard type his whole career, playing both spots. Ainge was a really solid player on both ends, and Maxwell, Walton, Wedman, bench was solid. Lsakers had Magic and KAJ 2 top 5 ever with Worthy as a 3rd stud and really good talent in the other spots. Have to admit the Lakers were just a little better with 2 top 5 guys, but Larry had lots of help. The video briefly mentions how superior the East was then, LA had a much easier road as well. Those were great days. Good reaction.

In took 7 years for MJ to win a title with Bird in the league.. He entered in 84, bird blew out his back the summer before 85 and went on to win 2 straight MVPs, a title and multiple 50-40-90 years. The last three years of Bird's career were post dual achielles heel surgery, and he only played in 6 games in 89. His last year was 91, MJ's 1st title. Bird was the best player in the NBA from the 1st day he walked on the court in 80, all the way thru the 80s. He was FEARED. And tbh, I'd take Kobe over LeBron most of the time. Shooting and HEART.

I admire your channel, and I'm a huge Bird fan, but to be fair: Bird and MJ had two different styles of playing. Bird couldn't do the 1:1 moves and put the level of fear into the hearts of opponents as much as MJ did. Yes, they DID fear Bird, but they knew he was not as focused on his own game as much as Michael was. And it was right for Michael to have that kind of impact. Just as much as it was right for Bird to lay back and support his teammates in his game: the passing, especially. Michael was not as much a passer as a pure shooter and drive-for-the-hoop player, and it fit his style. The one part of the game that Bird has over just about EVERYONE else is that he saw the entire floor at any time and knew where his teammates should be, and he knew more about what the opponent was likely to do even if he wasn't covering the man. Bird was closer to Elgin Baylor than MJ, but Michael had Elgin's moves and hang time.

Remember, Bird played his entire NBA career with an injury to his index on his shooting hand. The finger is shaped much like a boomerang, permanently bent toward his thumb at a 45-degree angle. Two operations have failed to straighten it; he can bend it only halfway to his palm. You can get a good look at it when he hoists it up in the 3 point contest victory. That’s an injury he did not have in college and never had the same feel for the ball after it.

aj20tower. You said it all about Larry's leadership abilities. McHale himself said it was Bird's leadership that made him a better player than he ever thought he could be, doing things he never did before, attributing his H.O.F. entry to Larry; as did the Chief and find Dennis Johnson's lengthy statement on Larry as a leader. It's incredible. Magic didn't develop his teammates like Larry's leadership did because Bird's example of every way the game was played was as perfect as it could possibly have been. The last part of D.J.'s comments: "Last year, he took us unlikely ones and made us believe as a team. He brought our potential to the fore then, and he's doing it now with us this year. He wins; he doesn't lose. When you have a guy that far ahead of everyone; and yet what amazes me most about him is how patient he is working with our team because he can do it all by himself, but wants our involvement just as much." Larry has virtually no self as in self centeredness. Never has a team leader ever become remotely that close. And when you understand what Jerry West said that Bird played basketball more perfectfully than anyone ever did but also having the spiritual gift of clairvoyance and precognition you can see why he always knew where to be on the court for the best opportunity to do something incredible, made his so-called "trash talking" work in reality calling plays in advance constantly and his clutch shooting perfection missing only one shot by a half inch or less against the Lakers, a shot everyone thought was perfect, which was attributable to the Lakers leaving him unguarded, with 2 seconds on the clock altering the shot ever so slightly because there was no one there to attempt blocking the shot, which always previously occurred. So you can see aj20tower Bird would have had 4 championships like Magic had it been perfect like all others. The Western Division was considerably weaker than the Eastern Division was and Magic skills were not like Bird's, which he admitted, particularly in the ability to raise teammates to higher levels of play. His starting team was already all star Hall of Famers. They were better than Bird's starting team because they did not have to become world class all stars as they already were.

Is Larry better than Jordan`? Its a very layered question. As an individual player? No, I dont think so and the stats, while not THAT different, also support Mike. But from a *value* perspective, I dont think there has ever been a more valuable player than Larry. He came into the league as the ONLY addition to the Celtics and swung their record by over 30 wins. I dont remember the exact stat but they had a like 29-53 in 79 and in the after Larry joined they shot up to like 61-21. I believe its still the biggest turn around ever. Larry had ALOT of qualities that cant really be quantified and he had them in spades. His IQ, his toughness, his drive etc but most of all his ability to raise everyone around him. McHale and Parish are both on record saying they reached personal levels of playing they could not even have imagined due to Larry. If you removed Larry from the 80s Celtics I firmly believe they wouldve suffered more than the 90s Bulls wouldve if you removed MJ. In a straight up 1v1 comparison, no Larry isnt better than MJ. But as an all around player and team value, I think he is. This is why I dont rank my top three. Its Jordan, Magic and Larry, all sharing the no1 spot. Ive tried it for years but whatever argument I or anyone make, there is always a counter argument thats actually valid. If someone wanna put MJ at no1, thats fine... I agree. If someone wanna put Larry or Magic in no1 thats cool too. The only real truth is that we wouldnt have a league at all without Larry and Magic, you wouldnt even know Jordans name, Jordan then took what they created and just elevated it even further. These are the three best ballers of all time. Rank them however you see fit. Edit: Congrats on 1k subs btw :D

Here's my argument on why I take bird over Jordan and Lebron. Both are truly amazing players. Nothing can take that away from them, but when it comes to Bird. He just has more going for him. Bird was a complete player who played with injuries that would put todays players out for the season. His passing and court awareness is out of this world. His shooting goes second to none. His defense may have slacked when it came to most face to face confrontations, but was made up for with steals and rebounds. He was complete. Then add him doing it with the broken cheek bone and a back injury that he had to do stretch therapy prior to every game to line it up long enough to play that evening. So yeah. When it come to being the G.O.A.T, Larry is mine. A Complete Warrior.

Larry Bird was a top 10 (Probably higher than #10) player of all time. Yes, great scorer, great passer, excellent rebounder, clutch shooter, excellent free throw shooter. Where he doesn’t even match Jordan’s skills (not even close) is defensively. This is the area where comparisons end. Bird was not a particularly good defender. Great shooter, especially clutch managed to grab 10 boards with Kevin & Chief grabbing a combined 20 themselves and a great passer and assist guy not bringing the ball down the court. He dived hustled talked trash like no other and never quit or backed down. He dominated the 80s and the tail end his back was tore up. The man was feared and did it all with no weaknesses. "Basketball Jesus" was used because he and Magic ( MJ took over in 1988 ) "saved" the NBA and I get it. Don't like "Basketball" or "Black" Jesus being used, but I get it. I remember having to wait until after the 11 PM news to watch the FINALS of the NBA! Regular games had little appeal for a short period. One of the highest flyers in the history of the league got so bad off, steps had to be taken to save his life. David Thompson is one man you should check out. His vertical was 44" or 48", depending on his age. He was like the grandfather of Michael Jordan. Dr. J ( Julius Erving for you who don't know , incredible ) is MJ's "father". In the 70's David Thompson and Dr. J were the two coolest dunkers, but even they followed Connie Hawkins, the Hawk. He was smooth, could drive n dunk on you or shoot a smooth 15 foot jumper. My point is all these guys followed someone. The latest is not necessarily greatest as seems to be the case in ANY generation. Keep up the good work. You're gonna make it.

I can see a conversation about the GOAT being Michael Jordan or Larry Bird. For me, the conversation doesn’t include LeBron. Not saying he isn’t great at what he does, but he’s not tough; not a leader. I’ve been watching basketball since the late 60’s. I was a die-hard NY Knicks fan, but as soon as I saw Bird play, I knew he was something special. I don’t think anybody would disagree that every time he stepped on the court you knew something special was happening. He played with a broken back, he played with a broken face and double vision. Seems to me LeBron gets a muscle cramp and he is out for the rest of the game. The toughness just isn’t there anymore, in my opinion. It’s not really exciting anymore. Larry was in a league of his own. As I have said before, Michael Jordan comes as close as I can put him, but Bird is my GOAT and always will be. ☘️🐐

Mchale wasnt an athletic wing defender like pippen but he was arguable the best PF compared to tim duncan. Dude was known for being a great scorer in the post that could play solid defense too. Parish was also the same, DJ was a sharp shooting faclitating PG that had many clutch moments with bird and danny was a sharp shooter as well. The team was talented and the addition with bill walton in 86, that team can be argued as the best team in nba history.
