I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. He was always several moves ahead of the competition, best clutch shooter of all-time, #2 all-time with winning percentage (Jordan is #40), he had the passing gift, and he could beat you more ways than just shooting. Jordan was dangerous when he had the ball. Bird was always dangerous - with or without the ball. "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird." - Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley “I would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird, because you have to play the game as a thinker when you’re playing [Bird]. You have to get inside his mind. Larry wasn’t quick, he couldn’t jump really high, but there were just some sleepless nights.” -James Worthy on Larry Bird, via ESPN SportsCentury " The difference between Jordan and Bird was that Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. " - James Worthy “Larry Bird can’t jump, and he’s not that quick… But he makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition… Consequently, he doesn’t have a weakness.” - Michael Jordan Only one man dominated Jordan. His name was Larry Joe Bird. Bird even dominated Jordan after Bird hurt his back in 1989.

I laughed when you said you couldn't believe Larry Bird wasn't black, because I was reminded of a Nolan Richardson story he told during his Hall of Fame induction. He was driving his car, listening to the radio, and the game he had was Indiana State vs. New Mexico State. Nolan went to U-Tech, who were rivals with New Mexico, so he was rooting for Indiana State to beat them. All while he's driving and listening he says he keeps hearing this name come up over and over again..."BIRD!! BIRD!!! BIRD!!! BIRD DRIVES DOWN, OH DID YOU SEE THE PASS BIRD MADE? BIRD FOR THREE!! DID YOU SEE THAT?" Nolan says "Of course I can't see any of this, but I could just imagine it." When the game was over, Nolan said of Bird: "Damn that brother can play!!!!" The next day he gets the newspaper, and they have a story about New Mexico State vs. Indiana State and he finally gets to see what Bird looked like, and Nolan was like "DAMN!!!"

All the great stories of Bird are from other players, most of them the opposing players. One of my favorites is told by John Stockton when the Jazz were facing the Celtics in Utah. Larry goes up to the Utah bench right before the game, stood there and said, "I feel like...43." Then he walks away and the game starts, and he finishes with 43 points and the win. I mean who does that? LOL

If there is one thing to take away from 70s-90s basketball that you don't see as much today, it was low post swagger.... back then the game ran through the block down low. The centers and power forwards were the focus... and there were so many different approaches. Kareem had the skyhook, Bill Cartwright had that insane straight arm + pure wrist release, Robert Parrish and James Edwards had insane fadeaways, Ewing had that quick turnaround, Worthy with that spin into a fake on the baseline, McHale and Olajuwan with silky smooth up and under moves... every team worth a damn had a guy that could make you look silly down low. For better and worse, modern NBA players are just better pure shooters. You can survive in today's game without an 18ft jumper... almost everybody has to be at least a somewhat legit threat from 3pt.. so not taking anything away from modern players, they are much better overall shooters than guys from 30-50 years ago... but it's just not quite as entertaining to watch in my opinion.

McHale was a machine with those long arms and moves Olijuwan studied because few guys were contemporaries with the two of them in the paint. The 86 Celtics were arguably the best team ever. Bird was epic, but his team was incredible, too, from the General Manager on down. Chief running the floor, DJ setting the table and Ainge shooting and running with the best.

My favorite Bird trash talking story. They were 2 pts down, seconds left. Bird walks past opposing bench, says I have 43pts, I’m tired, gonna bust a 3 on y’all & go home. They get him the ball, he shoots a 3pt shot, while it’s in the air, turns & says, I told you so! Game over! 😂❤

Here is how I look at it, You have your greats and GOAT's if you will. But there is a group of players, that without them, the greats and GOATs can't exist. Larry Bird existed between both classes, He was one of the foundation players that the greats usually play off of, but he also could stand in the sun, on his own greatness. Bird was a transcending player that was excellent in all aspect, even if he lacked many of the gifts (Like speed) that many of the greats had, He made up for it in hard work and forcing those greats to actually play. BTW here is a stat many may not know, of all the rings MJ has, not a single one came off Birds back. Not even when he hit prime and had Pippen with him did they ever seal the deal in a playoff or finals.

Pistol Pete Maravich scored 68 against the New York Knicks who at the time were the best team in the NBA. Pistol Pete's name is rarely ever mentioned when it comes to considering one of the GOAT status. He was inventing shots that had never been done before by any player in the NBA. He was by far the GREATEST ball handler ever, then and now. If you've never seen any films of PPM I stronly suggest you check him out. He was way ahead of his time. The most astounding thing about his career was that he played with a congenitally defective heart. The defect took his life at the age of 40 by a heart attack. Le😎 San Francisco, Califusa

The best part of that game was that the only reason he scored 60 pts was because he told McHale to drop 60 the game before, and he didn't do it. This game deserves every bit of folklore it gets. That was Larry. And there are so many stories like this. The man would tell a defender just what he going to do, with major detail, then do it. Then shit talk. Probably already mentioned but Jordan has often said he learned his mental game from Larry. The slow, plodding hillbilly looking white guy was likely the most effective assassin this league has seen. God how I hated him back then. But you respected his game too. If you could beat the Celtics in spite of Larry it was a huge achievement.

@11DNA11
@11DNA11 Год назад
the 3 point wasn't a thing back then. Bird is statistically the most clutch player in NBA history, and it's not even close. He's also statistically a more efficent shooter than Curry is, which in itself is crazy to think about. Imagine Larry Bird in the 2023 NBA season. Luka is the closest player currently to Larry Bird. And then you realize how special of a player Luka is and can do some outrageous stuff on the court. And THEN you realize that Bird is faaaar ahead of Luka in all aspects of the game. Bird could do anything. He'd trash talk you into oblivion, tell you what the play was gonna be and then just do it like he told he was gonna. Probably the best passer in the league, if not best then the most creative atleast (close with Magic being in the same league). He could shoot and turn your lights out anywhere on the offensive zone. He was super tough, played half of his career with a bad back and still was the best player on that Celtics team every year. He once almost did a quadruple double. He was one steal off that and didn't even play on the 4th quarter. So he did an almost quadruple double in 3 quarters.

He wasn't "elite-level" athletic, but he was athletic enough and supposedly a "tall" 6'9" almost 6'10" with great footwork and spacing. His passes and shooting was so good and quick defenders respected them and bit on fakes. His off-the-ball movement was stellar as well.

First Kevin McHale was being guarded by a Old Teammate of Larry Bird when he was in college at Indiana University before he left and went to Indiana State. I grew up watching Bird, Magic and MJ. I’d have to rank Bird and MJ 1 & 2 but honestly couldn’t say which one is No. 1. They both had that killer instinct and Bird was definitely a tougher guy because MJ whines about the Pistons playing “MJ rules” against him. That wouldn’t have affected Bird, he’d still kick their asses! I’d say slight edge to Bird 🤷‍♂️ over MJ? 🤷‍♂️. Bird was definitely THE most feared by players and coaches. MJ didn’t quite bring that fear, especially to the Celtics and Detroit Pistons. Those 2 teams had MJ’s number and it wasn’t really until those teams declined that MJ started winning against inferior talent! Magic and the Lakers got older, Kareem retired. Bird retired and then MJ started winning. That’s how it seemed when I grew up watching the NBA. So many younger 1990’s NBA fans didn’t really see this, they were just in awe of MJ as he dominated players who were NOT Bird and Magic caliber players.

First off, here's a quick short about Bird at 60 ru-vid.comcWHlK0mpGQo?feature=share3 Second, vs Utah one game he was 1 steal away from what would've been only the 5th quadruple double in NBA history. 30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, 9 steals What's crazy about this is they were up so much after 3 quarters, Larry subbed himself out for the 4th quarter. Someone then informed coach KC that Bird was only short the 1 steal, told Larry and asked him if he wanted to go back in. Bird said naw, I've done enough damage.
