What an apt time for me to discover this story 🥴

Just re-read this tonight when it came to mind. Yes, I'm glad you looked at the Luke passage as a guide because that pretty much sums up the main character's inability to see the log in his own eye while feeling it's obvious the hypocrisy is in everyone else. On first reading it seems the reason is that you can't convince a crowd that is beyond convincing, but there's a whole other side going on in Rayber that only Rayber can't see, that he is in fact an even worse bigot, one who thinks he's fighting for black people when he expresses his underlying prejudices that betray this. I love the way O'Connor doesn't flinch when approaching the ugliness of the South in order to make a point against hypocrisy, or for redemption. This is one of those stories I find memorable long after I've read it.
