I love that Bill's drums are different colors. It reminds me of the old Stephen Wright joke, "Hey, did you know your socks are two different colors?" "Yes, but to me they're the same because I go by thickness."
Every time I watch this, I hear another little idea, another little phrase, little nuance of Bill Stewart. And I watched this a countless times. What an amazing drummer!
Peter Bernstein is one of the few modern jazz guitarists that has a distinctive voice. You know him immediately when you hear him. Great sensitivity to phrasing and motive.
Bill Stewart is so underrated!!! This guy is one of the most distinctly recognizable players today!! His sound..the way he phrases, his touch!!!...You can spot his playing right away!!!
Fantastic musicians playing very tasteful music! PS: As a drummer, how not to recognize the immense talent of Bill Stewart, his creativity, his musicality, a true master. These guys are the cream of the crop!
just came back from a concert of these guys. What a fantastic trio! No showing off, just great musicianship, groove and lovely sound. A well spent night.
One of the best organ-guitar trios on the scene now or any time as far as I'm concerned. All three of these guys are giants on their instruments and I can't say enough about this. Those who feel it's necessary to avoid playing so-called "Straight ahead" should take their lessons from this. You can be fresh and hip and still swing and play changes! ' My hat's off to this great trio!
I agree with everything you say about this amazing trio. Gigants! Let me just add, that Goldings is a skilled bass player as well. The way he improvises, while he keeps the whole ensembelt together with feets and left hand - a great achievement. He is also a great jazz pianist; Listen to last album with John Schofield - Country for old men. Keep on swinging - in that trilling, intelligent way!
To me this is one of the greatest and long lasting trios out there. Incredible band that's really playing together and making the music sound great all the time. Yeah, gotta love it :-)
Great trio - love them. But this is the Village Vanguard, folks; you would think someone would have mastered this at a volume that could be listened to! I have everything cranked and I'm still in the other room. C'mon folks. No excuse for this today.
Bill Stewart is by far, if not the best, one of the best Jazz drummers of the 21st century... PERIOD!!!!!!! You simply can't play Jazz and Blues any better then this yo!!!!!!
In the 60s, at least on the east coast that I know of, it was the age of the great organ combos and it's such a joy to hear it alive and kickin' now but on the highest level, all around!!! Three masters of their respective "axes" who are great composers and leader individually but remarkably, they smoothly blend and fuse into a well-oiled music machine of superb sonic brilliance...WHEW!!!!!!!
Peter Bernstein when he gets down on the tune Danger Zone you see why he is a the best Guitar player on the planet hands down. Turn the lights down and let him play to the rhythm of the universe. He is the man.
Bill Stewart is such an awesome drummer. I saw him play here in Minneapolis w/ John Scofield a couple years ago. Man, I wish I had half his chops on the kit.
Top of the food chain right here... how lucky, HOW FREAKING LUCKY.. am I, because I hear this, I get to be with this, I hear it, I get it. So much fun. What a trio!
love this organ player! knew all the old and the new but larry I never knew.. damn europe! my favorite group to listen to on youtube at the moment.. jam on guys! 🎸😎
They're on a UK short tour. They played at my local club (Watermill, Dorking). Great gig. Many local UK musos came just to check out the band. Larry borrowed Ross Stanley's Hammond B3 and Leslie speaker. Great evening.
This is just too good. What a pleasure to have this superb trio so well documented- here and elsewhere. Their Live at Smoke DVD is epic, too. They were born to play together...
Great to hear Larry so soon after his master class at University of Denver and performance at Dazzle in Denver. Tune in to the NYE Jazz Set to hear his set from Dazzle.
Somebody stole the volume! LOL. This is a killer trio-A total favorite! Though we know the difficulties of live recording, this was done by WBGO @ the Vanguard, so I assume a good engineer was on hand. But before mastering for RU-vid, it seems nobody checked the VU meters (old school term lol). Just because they’re color coded now, doesn’t mean “make sure nothing hits Red”. A few DB peaks above Red on the meters (especially on louder tunes) IS the standard for digital, (& distortion is nil). This great performance is barely audible. Something I miss about mastering for vinyl and CD was you had to conform to one of the “rainbow book” standards (orange, red, etc). These ran the spectrum (pun!) from eq’ing to standardized volume across media. Now that everyone’s a “*home engineer”: standards have vanished. *Definition: “One who buys a lot of cool looking gear, but doesn’t use the best equipment they own: Their EARS!” 😂 Ok, I’ve ranted enough! It’s in the “Van Gelder” genome 🙂 No doubt from my late uncle Rudy. I just wish he or I had mastered this. :-} What a smoking band! Cheers. TVG.
Same group as on Bill Stewart's 1st solo outing on Blue Note, called "Snide Remarks". Brilliant trio. These guys just blend with each other so well. I notice Bill isn't using his famous hand-hammered brass Ludwig snare. No matter, it still has Bill's unmistakable tone. The groove is so deep it puts me in a trance. Big fan of Larry and Peter as well. Top notch NY jazzers. Doesn't get any better.
what a great sounding concert, you can really hear everything so clearly, great quality. The subtle reverb of Peter's guitar and the definition of the organ's bass notes. So goood.
freakin' awesome!!! I love this trio. I've seen this band live over here ( Holland) . it was a great concert. Top notch organ trio!! Thanks a million for the upload..
