Holmes received $3 million plus $500,000 in training expenses.
Spinks received $900,000 plus $100,000 in training expenses.
Holmes was a 6 to 1 favorite.
The fight was televised live on HBO.
A full house of 11,192 watched the fight in the Riviera's outdoor arena.
According to HBO punch stats, Spinks landed 318 of 697 punches (46 percent) and Holmes connected on 248 of 567 (44 percent).
Spinks became the first reigning World Light Heavyweight Champion to win the World Heavyweight Championship.
Holmes entered the fight with a 48-0 record, needing just one win to tie Rocky Marciano's all-time undefeated heavyweight record of 49-0. After the fight, Holmes said, "I'm 35 fighting young men and Rocky was 25 fighting old men. To be technical, Rocky couldn't carry my jockstrap." Holmes was heavily criticized for the remark, and he later apologized.
Spinks' victory over Holmes was named Upset of the Year by The Ring Magazine

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

Larry was a shell of his former self. Slow reflexes, slow jab, tentative, hesitant, afraid to get hit. He took Spinks lightly, probably didn't train too hard, and he paid for it. By this date, 9/21/85, Mike Tyson had recently won his 8th fight in a row by KO. In 14 months he would be champion. Imagine if Larry had won this fight and continued to defend his title for another 14 months and met Tyson in November 1986. It would have been another Marciano vs. Louis massacre.

I do wish Holmes would have won his fight against Spinks. Holmes by this point was falling off, but he was still the undefeated champion of the world. Had he hung on a little longer, his fight with Tyson would have been legendary. Of course Tyson would have won. But even in their fight with Holmes having a 3 year lay off, Holmes had a much better showing than Spinks did.

@@kingdomofanimaria I’d say it would be close. Old Holmes had enough tricks to survive to round three. Prime Larry Holmes would need to survive to round 7. Tyson never knocked anyone out after the 7th round. So if they fought prime for prime, I have either Tyson winning by 7th round knockout, or Larry Holmes by decision. In this case I’m leaning Holmes by decision. Holmes is by far the most underrated champion of all time, just because he falls right in between Ali and Tyson.

What people forget is that Spinks was one of the 5 best light-heavyweight champions ever. But that division was just such a no man's land when it came to accolades and most importantly, paydays. Many great light-heavyweight champion took a shot at a heavyweight belt and failed. Billy Conn, Archie Moore, and Bob Foster to name a few. But Spinx was the first one to win it. And also this was just right before the cruiser-weight division was formed. So if you were 176 lbs in the early '80's you were a heavyweight. Seems pretty ridiculous now. I think Spinks was 200 lbs for this fight, but he still looks small. Frazier was about 205 in his first fight with Ali, and Holyfield was under 210 when he won it the first time against Douglass.

In Holmes younger years he was the Mike Tyson of his Day. Even Tyson admitted Holmes would have beaten him in his prime. In Tyson's own words "I did not beat the Larry Holmes of Yesterday the Larry Holmes of Yesterday would have killed me". The only thing was missing was Holmes vs Forman . Had Holmes and Forman fought each other in the early 1980's it would have been equal to Ail and Fraser. It's would be like King Kong vs Godzilla had Holmes and Forman fought each other in their prime.

Michael Spinks was the Usyk of his day but better. Undefeated, Undisputed Lineal light heavyweight champion in arguably the toughest light heavyweight era ever. It’s even more impressive than Usyk’s win over Joshua. The fact that he came from Light Heavyweight & beat an undefeated legitimate top 5 heavyweight of all time is impressive. Michael Spinks - what a fighter he was! P4P one of the greatest.
@poundforpoundboxing8943

Took the words out of my mouth, except that Usyk is still going! So IF Usyk would beat AJ the second time AND beat Fury, he could be considered one of the p4p greatest fighters of all time. So, Time Will Tell! Can’t wait for Usyk AJ 2
@tonyh8965

@@poundforpoundboxing8943 absolutely Spinks was a beast. Speed was blistering, skills, stamina, combinations & chin. He had it all. He was awkward too & his body type made him look the rubber man in the ring but he proved to be an astonishing fighter. Holmes was still world champion & the number 1 heavyweight in the world & he moved up & beat him. Ok the second was closer & maybe homes could of won but it was close! Holmes was a big, skilled, hard punching, granite chinned heavyweight & he couldn’t dent Spinks in 30 rounds. Spinks knocked out the European champion at the time after Holmes & the 6.7” hard hitting Gerry Cooney. What he did also at light heavyweight in such a tough era is phenomenal. I never agreed with the downplaying of Mike Tyson’s win… with comments like ‘he was just a light heavyweight’… to me it’s a legitimate great win for Tyson’s legacy & criminally underrated, but it wasn’t at the time. They call Holmes’ greatness, and he is, no doubt, but he couldn’t do anything with Spinks, he couldn’t outbox him, ruff him up or overpower him. Holmes was a bigger heavyweight than Tyson & a hard puncher. Tyson beats Spinks in a round & ‘he shouldn’t of been in there etc…’ doesn’t make any sense. Spinks was great & proved his heavyweight legitimacy by beating Holmes twice & knocking out Cooney, despite Cooney a inactivity it was still a good win. Tyson haters always downplay the win like it was nothing… but as I said being as Holmes was a bigger heavyweight, very skilled, chin etc… they’re actually slating Holmes too… just give credit to a peak Tyson.

He did fight shavers, Norton, weaver, Berbick, Cooney, Witherspoon, Bonecrusher, Spinks, Tyson, mercer, Holyfield etc… not even close to fury Holmes is miles away.

@@smoothcritical1 you naming wilder as greats? Who he beat? Usyk? As a cruiserweight he beat some ok names & at heavyweight beat AJ but none of these guys are up there with Holmes & don’t have the names on his record. Fury has beaten Klitschko who isn’t really his Gen as Holmes wasn’t in Tyson’s. Klitschko was at the end at 40 years old. Outside of that fury has fought wilder & Whyte. Imo greatness is given to easily today. Names mean something win or lose… you fought them. Mike Tyson has Berbick, Tucker, Thomas, Spinks, Holmes, Holyfield, Bonecrusher, Tubbs, Ruddock, Golota, Stewart, Lennox etc… all world class opponents of differing success but world class. Virtually all champions. When todays Gen have a list of that many world class opponents we can talk.

Tyson beat Spinks so fast because he was the best fighter in the world at that time. He made Spinks miss and countered with his own bombs. The Saddest night in the history of boxing and the end of one of the greatest undefeated streaks in the history of HW boxing. If he had managed to win this fight and retired then and there, Larry Holmes would've joined Rocky Marciano in the Pantheon of Invincible Heavyweights.
@angeloiodice9304
@angeloiodice9304 3 года назад
No doubt, Larry was great. This was a fateful night for him. The stars were not aligned in his favor. He had the heavy load of tying Marciano and then he went out on a limb saying Rocky couldn't carry his jockstrap which enraged the old time boxing world. (made Larry appear proud and arrogant because Rocky was dead and how can you compare fighters from different eras? And "Pride goeth before the fall) And, also Michael Spinx had "revenge" in the way that Larry beat his brother, Leon. And, Jinx Spinks does his unorthodoxed "gumby" and Larry can't figure it out. Wow, Spinks was just relentless and talkin' and fearless, and floppin' and getting in there and under and around Larry. He fought a great fight and a light heavyweight, to boot. What a nightmare..

I didn't get to watch this when it happened. When I heard the results, my initial reaction was, "uh oh -- Larry pissed off the wrong person within the inner sanctum of boxing." However, in re-watching this fight multiple times (and through a clearer lens) all these years later, Spinks won, and likely by more than the 1 point margin on 2 of the score cards. He didn't win on style points, but he consistently scored in ways that Larry didn't seem to have an answer for. It's hard to watch a legendary boxer age in the ring, and that's what happened in this fight.
