Part 4: • Larry Holmes on Trevor...
Part 2: • Larry Holmes on Being ...
Part 1: • Larry Holmes on Droppi...
--------
Larry Holmes defeated Ken Norton for the heavyweight championship and defended his title seven times before facing Muhammad Ali. The former champ spoke on his title defenses, including the tough bout against Mike Weaver. Prior to the Ali fight, Holmes hadn't received the proper respect of a heavyweight champion due to the large shadow Ali cast over the division. Holmes admitted that he knew he was in a no-win situation against Ali because if he won, critics would shrug off the victory due to Ali's age.
Larry Holmes continued to speak on the bout against Muhammad Ali by explaining the circumstances surrounding the fight. While many believe Ali was dealing with Parkinson's Disease during that time, Holmes rejected that belief and claims Ali had his faculties during the fight. Holmes added that Ali didn't have Parkinson's until after their fight and claims he told Ali not to fight him but Ali wanted the money. According to the former champ, Ali was paid $10 million for the bout and he was paid $3 million even though he was the defending champion.
Larry Holmes described his 1980 victory over Muhammad Ali, which was the first time in Ali's career where he had a fight stopped. Holmes claimed Ali's trainer, Angelo Dundee, knew Ali had no chance against him because he knew all of Ali's habits after being his sparring partner. Holmes revealed that he wasn't hitting Ali with a closed fist for much of the fight despite attendees encouraging him to beat Ali up. The former heavyweight champ also described crying after the fight and going to Ali's dressing room to tell him he'd always be the greatest in his eyes.

This fight has parallels to when Rocky Marciano retired the Brown Bomber Joe Louis. One difference was the fact that Holmes already held a title when he fought Ali whereas Marciano was still climbing the ranks towards a title shot. Holmes cried after defeating Ali and Marciano cried after defeating Louis. Both were very concerned they may have seriously hurt the legends they looked up to.

Considering all heavyweights in boxing , I think Louis, Liston, Ali overall had the best jabs, not including Holmes. I agree, Holmes had the best jab in the history of heavyweight division. He used it so effectively especially along with his side to side movement. Like Robinson at welterweight, when in his prime I think Holmes could have beaten close to 95% of boxers in his division in the late 1970s, early 1980s just by using his jab. If you want to box, look at Holmes vs Shavers 1, textbook demonstration of effectively using the jab and movement.

I love Larry Holmes and I understand his bitterness being he was always in Ali's shadow, but saying Ali didn't have Parkinson's at the time of their fight is just delusional. You can watch Ali train for the fight and he literally couldn't even hit the speed bag. They loaded him with Thyroid medication which gave him good days and bad. When he came out to the ring they had to help him get through the ropes. And looking back now, health professionals say Ali had signs of Parkinson's as early as the mid 70s. Quoting Ali's long time ring side doctor, Freddie Pacheco (sp) "Everyone involved in getting Ali that fight should be charged with attempted murder" and he was right...

He might be able to pull off another miracle win. It soon became apparent that it wasn't going to happen. He just didn't have it anymore. I feel sorry for Holmes after he beat Ali. He respected Ali so much and felt bad, but what's worse is the people turned against Holmes just because he destroyed Ali. Larry was a great champion and one of the greatest boxers of all time. If Larry destroyed Ali and was showboating or whatever yeah I can understand the people giving Holmes some slack but C'mon man he fried for Ali and didn't wanna hurt him. Holmes is easily one of the GOATs along with Lennox Lewis, Ali, Foreman, etc.

Larry Holmes is in denial. Ali wasn't officially diagnosed with Parkinson's until 1984 but he was clearly deteriorating by the time he fought Holmes in 1980, and people forgot he fought Trevor Berbick a year later and actually looked better in that fight but still was a shell of his former self

@bxdale83
@bxdale83 3 года назад
It is hard to watch Ali's fight's after "The Thriller In Manilla". His skills started to erode in 1976 after that fight. His speech began to slow. He struggled with Ken Norton in the third fight and should've lost a decision, Jimmy Young outboxed him, and Earnie Shavers his chin saved him even though he stopped him late in the fight. I always said (in my opinion) that the fight that might have did harm to him was his fight with George Foreman because of all those hard body shots he took for 8 rounds. Ali was tough as nails but like you said it was to his own detriment

There's training footage of that fight where Ali can't even hit the speed bag. People might not know this, but Ali hid his Parkinson's diagnosis from the public so no one knew then he had it. Ali's long time ring side doctor, who wouldn't participate in the fight, said "Everyone involved in getting Ali this fight should be charged with attempted murder." I understand Larry's bitterness, being he was always unfairly in Ali's shadow, but he's really letting his competitive nature cloud his judgment here. It just is what it is.

Aging Ali fought Holmes in his prime to cover his personal expenses. Holmes never recovered from the aftermath of the fight because in his heart he knew that was not the real Muhammad Ali the great boxer. Mike Tyson revenged Ali's fight and Holmes realized what Ali felt during their match old vs new.
