Great reaction. I’m sure you are both unaware that Bird played his whole NBA career with an permanent injury to his right index finger which altered his shooting after college. The finger is shaped much like a boomerang, permanently bent down toward his thumb at a 45-degree angle. (If you pause the video when he puts his index finger up after the last shot in the 3 point contest, you’ll notice it’s notice straight) Two operations have failed to straighten it; he can bend it only halfway to his palm. There has always been a what if factor about Birds career about how much more he could have accomplished without the finger injury for he stated the ball never felt the same after the injury.

5 things that tell you everything about Larry "LEGEND" Bird.. 1 - He is actually left handed, but broke his hand in high school playing baseball and had to learn how to play right handed and played most of his career right handed. 2 - His back gave him problems since his freshman year in college and he was never healthy. His best, at his highest peek, was 80% and look at everything he did at 80% or less compared to everyone else. Think about what he would have accomplished if he had been fully healthy like Magic, Malone, Jordan, etc and he still was at the very least, their equal in almost every way on the court and proved it daily. 3 - He is, to this day, the biggest, nastiest, most brutal trash talker in the history of the game. He would literally tell you what he was going to do, tell you the play, and then do it and you couldnt stop it. 4 - Towards the end of the clip, the spot where he falls and hits his head then it skips to him coming onto the court? Those are both part of the same game. He fell, with a bad back that he nearly didnt even play the game because of, and broke his cheek and eye socket. Left for most of the 2nd half of the game, came back in the last 6 minutes of the game, took total control of that game, and won it for the Celtics. With a crippling back, broken cheek and eye socket, and a bad concussion. He played his entire career both college and pro, hurt. 5 - I call this the bonus and quite possibly the most important defining moment of his career that trumps pretty much every legend out there. Against the Atlanta Hawks, Larry Bird took over, dropped 60 points, and was so on fire, that he had the entire Hawks team celebrating whenever he made a shot. His shot for 60 from the sidelines had 4 Hawks players falling all over themselves with laughter and disbelief at how masterful he was on evey level and they all got fined for it and gladly paid it as they would later refer to it as the "price of admission to watch Larry Legend at his finest." You show me another player at any level in the pros where the opponents cheered and celebrated as if they were fans instead of the opponents? And his comment of "I saw God on the court tonight" when answering about his thoughts on Jordan is always left half finished. The rest of his statement is "But we got the all important W." Remember, Larry was a trash talker and he trashed Jordan when Jordan was still in college. His comment is taken out of context to pump up Jordan fans. Larry was trash talking Jordan. The Celtics and Bird trashed the Bulls and Jordan in that series and swept them and then went on to win the Championship. But no one ever talks about that fact, just taking his trash talk comment about God out of context. The only reason Jordan was in the McDonalds commercials was because after the first 4 Magic got hurt and couldnt fulfill his contract and Bird recommended Jordan. Otherwise its all Bird and Magic in those commercials.

Yeah Jordan's legacy is inflated by marketing, timing of the NBA boom, and lots of money to be made off him. Doesn't mean he's the best ever. Certainly one of them, though. And Larry also said after that 63 point game "Crazy to think a guy can score 63 and they still lose." But Larry knows that's not crazy because he himself said that he once was mad at Kevin and Robert and said "F you guys, I don't need you tonight." Larry scored 50 and they lost, and he ackowledged that had he involved them then they probably would have won.

Magic was a great player by any measure, but, Bird was just a bit better. Bird didn't play guard so Magic got a lot more assists than Bird, but, as you saw, his passing was superb. Bird was a better shot than Magic and could hit from long range. Magic, not so much. Bird was a better rebounder and led the league in FT% 4 times. First player ever in the 50-40-90 club. You only wanted who was better between Magic and Bird, but, I'd put Bird over everyone. Some were better shooters than Bird (darn few) but, no one was a complete package like Bird.

The thing that strikes me as a testiment to his greatness happened after he retired. He was coaching the Pacers and runing the guys through some drills and was just very unhappy with the outcome. Legend has it that he got upset and made a comment about their inability to pick up what he thought was so simple until someone finally spoke up and said something to the effect of "We ain't Larry Bird". Pro athletes in general make what they do look easy, legends and superstars like Bird take that to another level. As physical conditioning, medicines, rules and other things change, the athletes also change. Just a note: Bird avg for his career was 24.6, 10 reb, 6.3 assists, and just under 2 steals a game. He was 90% FT shooter and first to hit 50% fg, 40% 3pt, and 90% ft. A stat that will blow your minds is back then teams simply didn’t take many 3’s. Today’s avg attempts per game by both teams is over 10 TIMES what it was in mid 80’s so imagine today’s game which is far less physical and far more 3’s attempted. He’d have more ppg but probably fewer reb due to outside more often.

Today's game is weak it's not physical no defense. Imagine how many MJ Johnson and bird scores with no defense you can't touch him which MJ was actually accused of that but today it would be factually true. Magic had the easier road to the finals throughout the entire decade. 2)Magic CLEARLY was on the better team. When you say they just blocked the F out of Bird game over. That is how the whole world felt and then you see the impossibility of Larry Bird. The definition of clutch player.

Larry, every time. I used to watch him...you just can't believe. Listen to the greatest players tell their stories about his trash talk: he'd tell them exactly where he was gonna go and what he was gonna do...and then, he'd go do it. They couldn't stop him.

If you haven't seen it, look up the video in which Letterman interviews Larry Bird and Earvin Johnson together.

Larry Bird all the way. I never watched basketball, until I started watching Larry Bird play. He made basketball exciting. He will always be my all time favorite player. 💚💚💚

Lebron doesn’t even come in the range of Bird. He is but a mere shadow and imitator

I think the both of them are the greatest ever - equally. Both selfless, made their teammates better, didn't try to score all the points, loved to pass the ball to players in better position to score, and their rivalry not only saved the NBA, but it WAS the NBA for 12 years - Celtics vs Lakers. There are more qualities to judge who was the best of all time than stats or championships. These two were individually the total package and born leaders as well as great friends to this day. Bird was the first one to call Magic when he announced he had HIV. Amazing story...amazing players.

Bird was a cold blooded assassin at crunch time.

There are some players in clutch moments you DIDN’T want to handle the ball. Bird, Magic, Jordan. Those three were too freaking dangerous! They MADE basketball.
