Larry Short on Art Linkletter TV show - 1963

When I was 5 I was filmed (unbeknownst to me at the time) in a pet store in Santa Monica, California, for a segment of Art Linkletter's early show, "Life With Linkletter." My brother (Don Short, 3 at the time) also appears in the background of the beginning part of the video.
Several months after this initial taping, I appeared on the show with Art Linkletter, Sebastian Cabot, Jane Meadows, and Carl Reiner.
Don and I are both employed now by World Vision, and this video was featured at Art Linkletter's 85th birthday bash in Beverley Hills, where I had the privilege of presenting a gift to Art on behalf of the 35,000 children who had appeared on his shows over the years, and on behalf of World Vision, with whom Art has partnered many times to bring help and hope to children suffering from natural and manmade disasters worldwide.
The gala was sponsored by the French Alzheimer's Foundation, and coordinated by Art's daughter, Sharon.
My memories of Art are of a truly kind man who loved children from the depths of his heart, and had an uncanny knack for communicating at our level. I hope this video honors his memory, which will live forever in our hearts!

@cynthiaesquibel3191
@cynthiaesquibel3191 5 лет назад
It wouldn't be the same (Or even close to the original!) Things have changed far too much. Most young children are exposed to so many things at too young an age and have lost the innocent spontaneity children should have as a result. Between social media , television, and modern adults, most children have few, if any, manners, or respect for adults, are either tongue-tied or rude and flippant (since this is considered "cute and sassy" today and is encouraged), and probably couldn't be bothered to put down whatever electrical gadget in their hands to answer a question, let alone have a conversation! On tv, movies, and real life, children today are almost always shown being rude, flippant, obnoxious, and even foulmouthed, all the while being applauded and praised by the adults filming them! I'll just keep finding the good old quality shows from days past...I know I wouldn't enjoy a show like this with most of today's children!!

@LarryShort
@LarryShort 2 года назад
Ha, I've thought that many times! I think the producers' goal was probably to fool the celebrities, hence the reward for wrong guesses. But it didn't make a whole lot of sense in this case. Sadly, the show didn't last past its first season in 1963. But subsequent shows (like "Life With Linkletter") I think were much better. It was just a huge blessing for me to meet Art (and Sebastian, Jane and Carl) and to have the whole experience. My parents did sell the projector when they were tight on cash, but I still have the 16mm reel. I also cashed in the $50 war bond that Art gave me and used the resulting $350 as part of my first tuition payment at college!

Actually, this was from Art's prime-time NBC game show, "THE ART LINKLETTER SHOW", on Mondays at 9:30pm(et) during the first half of 1963 [from the same producer of his "PEOPLE ARE FUNNY" series, John Guedel], which featured "hidden camera" situations, in which Art's panelists (in this edition, Carl Reiner, Jayne Meadows [Mrs. Steve Allen] and Sebastian Cabot) had to guess the outcome.

Larry, what happened to the Bell and Hower Movie Projector you received from Art? Was it eventually donated to World Vision, to be used in remote ares where they did not have TVs and VCRs, but still used movie projectors and white walls as projection screens? I am glad to hear that you put the $50 war bond to such good use, using it for paying tuition at Biola College, such a wonderful Christian School.

Kevin, a few years after the show I think my parents got in a tight spot financially and had to sell the projector. I'm not even sure I was aware of this until later. Hi Donna! Yes, I'm still here, in good health, happily married and retired. (And yes, I still have the original footage!) Actually, it's very original in that, during a conversation with Art's daughter Sharon (about 1998 I think) I discovered there had been a fire in the vault which contained the original reels for this show, and they were destroyed. She was very happy to discover I still owned one, and I happily shared it with NBC to make a copy of. They did so and returned it. As a result of that meeting, as a 41-year-old I also was invited to be a special guest at a fundraising dinner in Burbank for the foundation Art chaired for many years, the John Douglas French Alzheimer's Foundation. I believe the occasion was Art's 85th birthday, and I publicly represented the 35,000 children who had appeared on his shows. They showed this video during that dinner, and I was also privileged to present him with greetings on behalf of my employer, World Vision, for his steadfast lifesaving work for millions of children impacted by the great famine in Ethiopia in 1985.

Cashed it in my freshman year at Biola University for tuition. I think I got about $350 for it in 1975 or 1976.

I actually never heard what happened to the egg (or the poor daddy toucan!). I did get a couple of bowls of goldfish from the pet store.😃

Really? You did the honorable thing and you only got a $50 bond instead of the $200. You would've gotten the camera either way. I'm sure that was a lesson you learned to carry on in life. Hope the $50 bond allowed you to retire early in life. Just kidding. Loved the video. Thanks for sharing.

It was a great experience either way! And the $50 bond eventually became more than $300 and helped me get started at college.

@@LarryShort just wanted to say you were a darling sweet and smart little boy, seemed very gentle natured, just lovely to see this! I was born in 1952, so not sure how old I was when this was on but I do have fond memories of these shows and they were great. Art was so good with the kids and getting cute things out of them. Hope your life has been wonderful and exciting!❤️ Reta

@@retalbtaylor370 - Thank you, Reta! Yes, Art had an amazing gift with kids, and was truly a quality individual. and yes, I've lived a blessed life! I have an amazing wife, two wonderful kids of my own, and a delightful granddaughter. I'm happily retired and in good health (for an old guy of 65!). My faith is very important to me. Hard to think of what more I could ask for?

Yeah - it's a cheap way of giving a kid a gift - you pay 37.50 and it'll be worth 50 seven years later.

"War" bond? More like Savings Bond.

I could be wrong but I think it was actually called a war bond. As someone on this string mentioned, they had a lot of them left over after WWII.

Remember great ethics? 2020 people don't have it. Seriously...teach your children. I don't want to say it's to late. But look at our problems in the greatest country in the world. United States of America. I'm starting to get embarrassed. We are becoming a 3rd world country...spend more time teaching your children the Constitution of the United States of America.

Lots has gone wrong in America lately, no doubt about that. But I still think our kids represent the greatest hope for our future. I think daily about my granddaughter and other kids and young people I know. She, like so many, have an innocent faith and a commitment to do the right thing, no matter the cost.
