I remember back in the late 70's Sparks was scratching out a living by playing a roadside tavern in Hurricane, West Virginia named "The Rose Garden." Like Doyle Lawson used to say, "If you didn't have a knife on you when you came thru the door, they'd give you one." Robby Ward, from Hurricane, I worked with him, told me at work one day; Hey, man, Sparks is playing the Rose Garden Thursday night.....I just couldn't believe it. Sure enough, he did. He played alone. Just him and that 1954. Martin guitar. Like Larry said in this interview, "It ain't always been easy ".....that was one of those nights. He was just promoting himself and scratching out a living. That night I requested, "You Could have Called" It was the best number of the night.
I remember as a teenager in 1974 Larry came to East Lansing Michigan and do a show at the Greyhound bus station. Couldn't have been more than 75 people there and he even took song requests
Larry…..If you are reading this, I want you to know that I think you are phenomenal! Love your music brother! Have it on in the house and the car all the time. LOVE IT!! I have to admit, I did not discover you until a few years ago. I love all kinds of music, and I did not get into Country and Bluegrass until a few years ago. I regret not having discovered you a long time ago. However, I’m making up for it now! Your songs DO paint a picture!!
