Y'all know me, still the same O.G. but I been low-key
Hated on by the Lefties, cause I'm all cheese, I got deals under a G
No bass wheels and no chin rest keys, no bows, no perpetualmobiles.
OK, I'll stop there, but these are the Larsen Original violin strings. They're warm, clean, well balanced and have great response. You can hear them compared against a few other strings in the video.

Excelent idea to do a back to back comparison! Maybe we can get a video doing a comparison of all of them in the end and get some additional comments from Michael on his approach on matching strings depending on budgets and playing styles ( like which sets are more suitable to be combined or which are better suited as a whole set, obviously subjective but his opinion is very important). Knowing like which strings best serve your playing aims (orchestra, recital, etc.) really would come a long way from someone with Michael's experience.

Where is your Aurora review ? You should pack up your shop with these as well. They are affordable and worked very well on most the violins I tried them on. I also love the Il Canone ones.

I use Larsen virtuoso strings & believe it or not ,I've found (after trying just about every string on the market) that these strings actually sound better the older they get ! I know it sounds crazy especially coming from a guy who used to change strings every 6 months,I've had this set on over a year & they're still going strong. Excellent strings very well made.

Thank you for the in depth description. For my part I liked the sound when you played the Larsen Originals and the Warchal Amber strings best. I have a violin very similar to the artist which I purchased from a local violin shop years ago. I think your artist violin is perhaps an upgrade from mine but the tone is very similar. Since my instrument is what I learned on, I started with Preludes. I liked their forgiveness and playability. But I loved the sound of my teacher’s strings and tried the Larsen Originals. I love the complexity the Larsen’s bring. Great playing, Michael. I like your humor and skill. Keep up the good work. Best wishes to you all at Fiddlershop. Do you have a video with Larsen’s on a viola? I’d like to try them on my viola but would like to hear a demo first.

I would also love to see a video of the larsen strings on the viola. I've had the larsen a-string for years and has always loved it. But the rest have always been d'addario synthetic strings (of some sort). I've liked the combo but also feel like it's time to try something different :)

I'd pick the Larsen Tzigane over the original for Irish fiddle music. These, or Thomastik Spirocore steel strings, which I found out many pub musicians in Dublin are playing.

Michael, you played my Ferdinand Fischer violin when I picked it up today (thank you again, gorgeous to hear played by you), and you mentioned a Larson A string that many people like. Is this the one, or another Larson A? Also, I love the Warchal Ambers in your comparison, but wonder how much of their sound in this video is due to the older studio.
@Fiddlershop
@Fiddlershop 2 года назад
Pardon my delay here! But it was so nice meeting you, and yes, this is the A string (but for viola) that violists often use regardless of the other 3 strings: fiddlershop.com/products/larsen-viola-a-string And yes, that old studio was a little too generous with its reverb, so that probably made the Warchal sound a little extra good. Buuuuuttt, they are still very nice. 😃

Oh, yeah I need to get back in gear of doing these. But I LOVE Titanium Solo, and I used them for years before I started using PI's. Sometimes I miss their warmth and power, and incredible lifespan, but I liked just the shade more clarity and response of PI.

@@Fiddlershop great! I'm curious because I have an antique and every medium tension string I put on is scratchy and cracks under the pressure; I'm wondering if the virtuosos could help in that regard.
@marco27557
@marco27557 3 года назад
I tried larsen virtuoso on my violin and I would like to see the "scientific" version of it too, especially because I did not try the originals yet. In my opinion they are bright sounding strings, moreover the "medium gauge" has a lower tension than other brands' "medium gauge" and this can be great on some instruments. The sound is clear and even in all positions but not at all "cold". They may not be the warmest strings, but they are ok (and this depends on personal tastes and on the instrument). In my experience, I think they would be great on maybe some ancient violin (for the tension) or also some instruments that need something to be brighten. Personally I choosed to experiment other strings because I like more "neutral" sounding strings since I'm happy with the timber of my violin. However, I was not disappointed at all and actually they made me enjoy my instrument even with a brighter sound. I am now thinking to try the G D from Larsen original and A and E from virtuoso :) but this will be in a while from now

Il cannone, original or Tzigane? Which is better?
@Fiddlershop
@Fiddlershop 3 года назад
They each have different pros and cons, I think Tziganes are the darkest, and a little gritty, Originals lean dark and more rounded, while Il Cannone are the most focused, and cleanest. So, it will depend on what sound you think will pair well with your violin. Have fun exploring!
@ThomasTVP

I used the original Larsen many times in the past, but after recent tests I prefer the Tzigane for the broader, warmer tone.

Well, those strings are pretty bright, which could work for an old fiddle. But there's not much in terms of color and complexity- in general, you get what you pay for.
