In 1979, craftsmen and artisans labored for over a year to complete the massive stained glass interior dome for the Tropicana Hotel, but now a local artist hopes the ceiling can be saved before a new Major League Baseball stadium shatters a piece of Las Vegas history.

It's beautiful but -- created in 1979 -- it's not historically significant. Most museums wouldn't be interested due to the cost of extracting it. But if all the keyboard-curators here donated even 10 bucks, it would not only help offset the cost of removal, moving, and re-establishing it somewhere, it would be a show of public support that generates attention.

Omg, PLEASE!! 🙏🏼 And honestly it is SUCH a shame because Vegas has always been so superficial and commercial that I’m sure there have been countless pieces of artistic history (it is such a unique place regardless of how u feel about the commercialism) that it’s like, where are we in Las Vegas development as a city? Are we finally ready as a city to seriously invest in preserving our cultural history?? We finally have sports teams and a big dumb ass LED dome like are we ready to seriously start saving and giving honor to more of the history? With big money does come some beautiful artwork. it's not all fast produced superficial garbage.

Whose supposed to pay specialized workers to come and take each piece of glass out? How long does that take? So someone has to pay for the actual glass artwork, the company that can remove it, and the time of the building owner since they'll have to wait in this. So that's 4 mill for the art alone. Good luck.

I suppose my opinion as an outsider is meaningless, but it amazes me how a city as culutrally iconic as Vegas is so quick to disregard its history. So many iconic places demolished, sometimes replaced with nothing, sometimes replaced with a project that doesn't get finished for years, if ever. The fact that the idea of this ceiling being lost to demolition is even being discussed is kinda proof of the problem.
@Nope_handlesaretrash

Vegas is already drowning in history it has quite a few landmarks and iconic pieces of itself in preservation. Nobody gave two wet farts about this ceiling until they had a chance to get on the internet and express their opinions. 5 seconds after posting here most people will forget about it completely. Sure it looks nice but it's just the entrance lobby of a shabby hotel. It is in no way iconic to Vegas the way things like the Marlboro Man neon sign or the stratosphere are. Want to talk about architectural crimes painting all over the sides of the Luxor should have been considered a war crime.

I'm a Las Vegas resident. I've been born in this year since the 90s. I think it's a shame that they're taking away Las Vegas history and replacing it with a stupid baseball field. There's plenty more land somewhere else. We don't need a baseball field on the strip. It just makes the money go higher makes all the residents pay more intaxes. When? We can't even help our homeless population. Helping families that are struggling but we have money to build things like this. It's sad and it does make me sick it makes me feel like I don't even wanna be a Las Vegas resident anymore and I'm born and raised here and I love this city but no one wants to help. It would be cool if the city would buy that rooftop and use it as a promenade into the stadium.

They cut up, disassembled and put back together Abu-Simbel, an Egyptian monument on the Nile. I think they can handle saving this piece of art.

I would love to see the front of the Tropicana be left there and somehow incorporated into the stadium. Keep a piece of history while making new ones. But it would be cool to somehow at least get that glass ceiling taken out before they take down the casino and put the ceiling in the stadium or museum.

I suggest they, CBS & the City of Las Vegas, contact the Tiffany Jewelry company. That glass was created by Louis C. Tiffany and is actually priceless if one can document it's authenticity. Plus, the Smithsonian Museum could be of great help as if real, it becomes a United States treasure so that the public can see it forever.

this could go on a cruise ship or at least a portion of it. have seen similar art pieces on them. Get it stored at one of these museums that is willing to archive it, then work on all the cruise lines. they could be used over the dining room, in the grand artrium entrance, etc. So many have new ships coming out in upcoming years.

It's not really lost to history. Take a high resolution scan of it immediately. If we could get our hands on high resolution scans of things we've re-discovered from the past, we'd be so thankful for that.

A high resolution scan is one thing, a handcrafted work of art like stained glass is entirely another.

With the ability of laser scanning, the support structure , if needed could be easily recreated. As to the stained glass panels, if there can be a removal , repair and reinstallation of the stained glass windows in Notre Dame, then surely the same efforts can be used to save such a treasure.

Artistic touches and statements in construction are all but gone from spaces now, so it is crucial this be salvaged and given new life.

@Nirrrina

Yes they can disassemble it carefully. Then either include it in their new place or it could be saved by the museums until a good place could be found for it. Heck they could even take it down carefully & sell it to someone. At least it woukd be saved that way. I'd prefer a donation though. Which would allow them to save on their taxes too. I really hope they save it or allow someone else to save it. It's just too beautiful/expensive to demolish.

There is a compromise. Remove some of the panels and sell them to collectors and museums where a smaller piece could reasonably be displayed. The problem is that in taking it apart, lots of little pieces are going to get lost or broken. It would cost millions in removal, cataloging, reinstallation and then repair/replacement. This is just not a peice that can really be moved economically. Better to save a little than none at all.

I don’t live in Las Vegas, I think it should 100% be saved. They mentioned something about the new stadium, it would be cool as the ceiling of a food court area or something similar.

*_What a waste if they can't save it_* Short term, if they can prevent the entrance to Tropicana where artwork is located, from damage during implosion, it buys time. Then artwork can be documented, moved to new venue, and reassembled from documentation (photos, videos, 3D scans, etc)

As a commercial construction guy its a shame to see that stunning stained glass blown up. Hopefully somebody will step up to save at least a few panels.
@L33tSkE3t

I mean, it would not be that expensive to deconstruct the various panes of glass and store them until a proper use case could be found or plan for preservation drafted. That doesn’t seem unreasonable to me, especially in a city like Vegas where people are more accepting of different and interesting examples of architecture and exhibits due to the nature of the casino industry’s dominance there.
