If you think this was pretty, you should take a similar trip below the Lake Powell Dam. The vertical walls are 700' to 1,000' high. The water is just as clear, and just as cold. You take out at Lee's Ferry just before the bad rapids of the Colorado River going through the Grand Canyon.

This is so cool! I have lived in Las Vegas for near 15 years and just now i am planning this trip. I am using my own canoe and want to camp at least one night. I am getting information about the permits needed and if there is a way to launch right from hover Dam site or if in my case because i am not going in a tour group if i would have to paddle up river from Willow Beach then down again, leaving my car parked at Willow Beach, which allows you to do so for up to a week. We have been many times at Willow Beach and i have always watched those kayaks tours taking off and coming in but I never figured what was all about until recently once receiving my ultralight canoe and testing it in some distant Utah Lake for the purpose of one day planning a trip to Alaska or Canada to camping and portaging that I googled canoe portaging near Las Vegas and came up with Black Canyon! now I know! I would figure i will do a solo trip first and then encourage family to come alone..I want to measure how hard the paddling is. I have ultralight and extreme quality equipment but for my family would have to rent at least 2 kayaks for the kids as I already own one that wife can use. I think with the prices for rentals, if we buy the equipment needed in two or three trips it pays very well for it all, except mine equipment which being ultralight it is quite expensive.

Great video Cliff. I plan on kayaking from Willow beach to the Emerald cave this summer. I watched many videos and found yours to be the best, with good info and excellent video quality. What time should I arrive at the cave for best pictures? Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for the kind comments! I believe I was at the cave around noon, but that was already preplanned by the outfitter that took us down the river. It was a sunny day, so the sun was directly overhead and made the green water really glow. Enjoy the trip and safe paddling!

Excellent video! Other than GoPros, what other camera are you using?

Hi Chris Sgaraglino, Thanks for the feedback! I use two GoPro 6 cameras. The key to making shoots look more cinematic with a GoPro is to shoot in the linear mode, not the wide mode (only use that sparingly for the right situation). Most of what I shoot for these videos is from the GoPro's, but I also use the Sony RX10M4 and Sony RX100M5 for the best video, or shooting with a shotgun mic. I also use a DJI Spark drone for any of the aerial shots I do. I'll be down in the Clearwater area (Where I was born) the last two weeks of Sept shooting probably 4 videos. Paddle safely!!

How fun! The cold water will be a nice relief from the heat. I hear the current is a lot faster in the summer because they let more water through the dam, which makes for a quicker trip. You’ll have fun!

It’s a great trip, you would really enjoy it! I use a GoPro hero eight currently and a Sony mirrorless RX 100 VII. On videos where I fly a drone, I use the DJI Spark. With this outfitter, all you need to bring are your clothes and a towel. They provide lunch and everything you need for the trip.

@supersaltlee - I take my Sony Mirrorless camera with me, but I make sure I keep it in a dry bag, just in case . . . . I like the small magnetic closure Yeti drybag, it works awesome! The kayaks with the outfitter I used in Las Vegas were very stable, you would have to work to tip them.

Cliff how deep was the water along the trip?

Chris Hampton - Hey Chris, The water appeared to be very deep throughout the whole flow. You only saw the bottom when you ventured near the shoreline. Very clear water! My guess would be that the water is consistently 30 to 50 feet deep.

It’s the “Kayak Hoover Dam” trip - $209. Starts at 7 AM in the morning and ends at 2 PM. Enjoy the trip and safe paddling!

Lredski ‘s - No whitewater, it’s just flat water with varying speeds of current depending on the time of year and how much water they are letting out of the dam.

What kind of physical shape should one be in to do this trip?

Hi there Eric, it depends on how fast the current is and how much water they are letting through the dam. When I went, it was fairly low current. It is a 13 mile trip and at the end we had a headwind to head into. If you are comfortable paddling 10 miles in your personal kayak on any given day, you can make this trip no problem.

felipe patino - I believe you can use your own kayak, you just have to purchase a permit. I believe the state has arranged for all permits to be purchased through the few approved outfitters. There is no parking at the dam launch. You have 15 min to unload from the outfitters van, so it can get out for the next van to come down. Either way, you can use your own kayak, you just have to be transported to the launch point by the outfitter.
