I am searching for the family of R.J. Leifson of Tacoma, Washington. Based on a search on Ancestry, I believe his name was Robert John Leifson. I purchased several silent 8mm films at a charity sale. The return addresses on them are for Mr. R.J. Leifson of Tacoma, Washington. If you are a member of the Leifson family, please contact me through my website www.BradDison.com. (click on "Contact Me")
This vintage film shows Las Vegas when the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop) were at the top of their game in Vegas. The film begins at the Leifson's home in Tacoma, Washington. The family loads things into the car, what I believe is a 1958 Pontiac Super Chief, and then drives south to Las Vegas. The group stops by a small café for hamburgers and beer. They arrive on the Las Vegas Strip and captured images of casinos including the Tropicana, the Flamingo (Ella Fitzgerald, Myron Cohan, and Frank Sinatra Jr. were performing), The Sands (Red Skelton and Vikki Carr were performing), the Dessert Inn (Maurice Chevalier and the Kim Sisters were performing), the Silver Slipper, Stardust (the Lido de Paris cabaret show), the Landmark, the Riviera (The George Burns Show, Jane Russell, Connie Haines, and Beryl Davis were performing), and the Sahara.

What a great film to "remember back then". I was 17 years old in 1964. We lived in Michigan and dad decided to take the family to California for summer vacation. We stayed in Las Vegas for two days and had a ball. To this day (I'm now 76) I can remember my mother and dad telling us about the Shecky Greene show they went to see at the Riviera.We stayed there, and my brother and I swam in the biggest pool I had ever seen. One of my top three vacations of all time. Thankyou so very much, all I have to remember that trip is some photos. I've now got this film on my favorites list.

My Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Floyd Woody lived at 4409 South Pecos Rd in 1964. He belonged to the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. She worked at the Desert Inn. I Iwas 17 years old, visiting from Toronto Canada and my Aunt got me tickets to see the Beatles. The tickets were $2.50 each.

@@markme4Thank you. Ive seen it on Google maps. When they bought the land in the early 50’s they had a travel trailer and built a ranch house. They had matched palomino horses and a barn they built on the land. They rode in parades such as Heldorado & the Rose Parada in California. I have a picture of the trailer sitting in the desert. Thanks again for commenting. John

We moved from LA back to Denver in June of 1964 and stopped for the night in Vegas. Interesting to think we may have seen these folks on our journey. My parents put us kids to sleep and they went and played the nickel slots. Couldn’t do that nowadays. Also, for all of you youngsters out, there the noise you hear is the sound of an 8 mm movie projector.

I lived there Sept61-Apr63, Apr65-Aug66 & Jan71-Aug72. To give you an idea of how small Vegas was when I first moved there in 61, there were only 26 traffic signals in all of Las Vegas Valley! From Apr86-Jul93 I had to go to Vegas about 7 or 8 times a year on business. During that whole time period, it was amazing to see just how fast Vegas was growing & changing!

3:30 Finally, my beloved Sahara! I used to love going to their cafeteria for the best buffet in Vegas! The last time we went, the cafeteria was closed, it was right before they shutdown and tore it down forever. My friend found a 5 dollar bill walking in to the lobby and she played the slots and won $100 bucks. That is lucky!

Interstate 15 back in 1964 was known as US91 and Interstate 515 was US93/US95. Interstate 215 at the southern boundary of the airport was part of NV146 before the realignment of NV146.

1964 was when houses were first built in my eastside neighborhood that was surrounded by desert for years. I wonder what residential area this video started. Around the Huntridge are very old houses,downtown had very old houses that have been converted into offices,Scotch 80s around Rancho is old.

At 2:09 - For “Little House On The Prairie” fans, under the Folies Bergere marquee, the lower marquee has the names Paul Gilbert and Jerry Colonna. Paul Gilbert was the father of Melissa Gilbert, who was born around that time.

Tropicana before the additonal wing, also before they had that beautiful tall waterfall fountain installed up front. The Landmark was finished in 1964 -- but did not open until 1968, so 4 years later! Of all the hotels shown here, only one survives as of August 2024. And if you want atmosphere like this today, you need to go to Laughlin, perhaps to Mesqurte, not Vegas. As Classy Old Vegas is toast.

Funny, in Barstow I-40 wasn't finished yet, still had to use US Route 66. BTW, if they took this trip just one year later.... Kodak had released the Super 8 system, the quality of the captured image would have been superior, the captured image with Super 8 being 40% larger than with Regular 8mm, also the normal frame rate is 18 fps instead of the really bad 16 fps, and of course you could have filmed at 24 fps and projected it back at the same frame rate as well.

This can’t be 1964. The Landmark Hotel (the Space Needle looking tower) wasn’t completed yet. Unless this is what it looked like before completion in 1969. It did get started in 1961 but lack of funding stopped it at 80% completed by 1962. It eventually got funding by none other than Howard Hughes and was finally opened in 1969. That would be amazing if this was actually caught on film during the time it just sat there incomplete! Awesome either way as it’s amazing to see a town the way it was 60 years ago! I wish I could go back and visit!
@costernocht

Great call! But it looks as though it isn't complete. There seems to be no glass enclosing the saucer at the top -- or on the sides, for that matter. My heart broke a bit when the Landmark was demolished in 1995. I was fascinated by it as a kid (and remember long, vacant stretches between hotels on the Strip).

I determined that it was 1964 based on a few things. On the reel was marked June 1964. To verify this, I compared the performers shown on the marquees and determined the date. It would be amazing to go back for a visit in time. :)
