Today, my old buddy Austin Skinner takes the helm of the show. While we were in Las Vegas doing a 7-night residency, Skinner filmed on the street, on the stage, and backstage during our time there. I hope you enjoy it as we talk about everything from parts guitars, parts coupling, neck pockets, using the UA Dream 65 modeler, pre-gig warm-up, and my recently acquired 53 Tele-style guitar.
Gear used:
Mirage comp, XTS re-housed Mostortion, XTS modified GE-7, Mad Prof Deep Blue Delay, UA Dream 65, and Walrus Audio Canvas interface.
1953 Telecaster built by my old college buddy, B. Paisley, using a mix of old and new parts. Ron Ellis 52T and Standard Plus pickups

Strings:

I love the 9.5 Daddario set too. It’s not “balanced tension” but it does have some tiny adjustments. The rhythm sounds are tough enough and the high strings are pliable.

WOW, all this absolutely, terrific, wonderful, enthralling guitar information is “music to our ears”. This is a wonderful episode, all of you episodes are wonderful, but this is a guitar-heads dream😊

Good job Zac. Per usual, pleanty of sound advice (pun intended 😊) as well as simple explanations based on 30+ years of experience. There's a reason we haven't seen the "Ask a kid at Guitar Center" channel. LOL. Speaking of Vegas... There are two things I would safely bet on. The sun coming up tomorrow and the next episode of Ask Zac having some information I can use!!! Win win!

Hey Zac, regarding the arthritis in your thumb joint: if you cut cow's milk out of your diet, the pain should go away, and the joint heal after a few weeks. As we get older, our bodies are less able to process things like cow's milk, and the toxins in milk products can build up in joints, or at sites of old injuries. Switch to plant based milks for a while and see what happens.

I love scones, Zac! I mentioned that once to a co-worker from the U.K. and she asked if I'd ever had scones with clotted cream and jam. She brought me some the next day. Heaven. Oh yeah, and the guitar parts were cool.

Just a thought but maybe invest in one of those muffler/wind socks that you see on boom mics that should help with the wind and background noise a little. Not sure how youre recording sound on these. But love tue format of these vids. 10/10 on theory 7.5/10 for execution lol. Love your stuff mate! Cheers from the UK!

I have noticed that amp modelers like the Dream 65 and my TC electronic combo deluxe 65 ampworx are both brighter than the Strymon Iridium. The 65 dream is even brighter than the TC electronic combo deluxe 65 ampworx. That's why I have preferred the TC electronic combo deluxe 65 ampworx over the dream 65 and its half the price. The strymon and the TC electronic modelers handle overdrive better than the dream 65 in my opinion. The reverb on the TC Electronic modeler is fantastic.

Great analysis Mr Z! About the comments re heavy t bridges: I sold a Crook Paisley with the 6 screw Callaham bridge. Beautifully made instrument but that bridge along with the neck inserts changes what I like to hear in a T. Again to each his own! Notice your Paisley doesn’t have that bridge BTW. Keep up the great work!

Love the info and the “man on the street” vibe but the wind noise is crazy. Tried to listen while folding laundry in the next room (because life) and couldn’t catch a word of the cheap hardware section. But yes, I’m going to sit quiet and listen now. 😅

The less an instrument needs input from the player, the less it is theirs. The term "fundamental" actually takes out the "fun". The "fun" is in controlling the harmonic 'trash" made audible by either component qualities - OR system qualities (i.e. a "fuzz" pedal).

I never quite understood why Keith, Brent Mason, et all used heavy bridges on Teles. The crappy Tele bridge is so essential to the sound.

Zac, Nice change of pace, Good to se you out and about.... I think you need a more directional mic, the background noise is very distracting. But regardless I enjoyed this one....Thanks

After swapping out a guitar's body, neck, and pickups over time, is the guitar still considered the original guitar? I have a 2010 Squier Affinity Tele, Butterscotch Blonde. The nut width is 40mm and I want to replace the neck that has a nut width of 43mm.

How different is the Ron Ellis 50B from the 52T?
@AskZac
@AskZac 8 месяцев назад
52T is more steel guitar, 50B has a bit more of a gainy quality. Both can work for most things I would do

Guitar teachers should learn/teach pre jam stretches, especially for the left hand or neck/fret hand.

Your comments on body weight tell me that weight relief is less about tone than the overly weighty build. There needs to be a "standardized" way to assess resonant quality of finished instrument and assign appropriate levels of that metric to the components which affect the overall quality the most..
@Youtubemademeaddahandle
@Youtubemademeaddahandle 8 месяцев назад
There is an impedance to sound wave transfer from one medium to another as in neck to body. These are the two major components supporting string vibration. The goal is to diminish the loss of energy from the string which transfers energy generated by the player while contributing to vibrating.

@AskZac A cardioid or super cardioid lav would be best but even a more common omni lav would really help a lot. I nearly clicked away when watching this but the content was really good so I suffered through. I'm guessing you may have lost some people so I hope you can sort it out if you do this kind of thing again, which you should... it's a cool concept doing the location thing.
