So I've been busy learning the in's and out's of my new laser engraver. While browsing online I came across some beautiful Japanese paper and wood lanterns and knew exactly what I wanted my first big project with my laser to be. In this video we take a look at the design, process, failures and final resulting lamp.

Sometimes it's the journey that has value, not just the destination. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot in the process so I don't regret taking the long but scenic route.

Very nice project. You could maybe use data from the touchpad to seed the randomization? (Not that it matters.)

Amazing! I love the concept, very simple but the patterns make it look more complex. Where can I find the files you mention in the video?

I would have used finger joints around the edges to make assembly a little easier (you could strap clamp the whole thing together since the fingers would have supported the back of each side)

I thought that was the way I was gonna do it at first but figured it'd mar the clean aesthetic. This way is more annoying to glue up but looks super clean once the burned edges are sanded.

Good stuff. How can I get a pcb like that? I would like to try this.
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 2 года назад
I have a few spare bare pcbs if you wanted one for the cost of shipping, but unfortunately I'm out of the microcontroller chips (lead times are ridiculous, and the alternative of buying scalper chips at 10x markup is unsavory).

@@sjm4306 I apreciate the offer but I was thinking more of, get the electronics together and make your own, kind of thing. I dont have the knowledge to do the electronics finding stuff myself. I appreciate your kind offer. I actually have an original lamp from Korea which used to do this and I tried taking it to two profesionals who couldnt manage to replicate this with led. So it was so interesting as a follower finding you did it in your last video.

which type of paper you used inside ? does it heat up when used for continuously for long time
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 10 месяцев назад
Just regular printer paper. The leds are low power so basically no heat.

DXF files only contain vector data (basically the bare image), not toolpaths/passes/power/speed. NC files contain that info, and so the laser cutter will only accept NC and not DXF. You have to import the DXF into a cam software like lasergrbl to generate the toolpath NC file which will then allow you to specify how many passes you want. It's similar to the concepts of STL vs gcode in 3D printing.

what is the thickness of wood you used for laser cutting this lamp ?? and what speed and power to cut
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 11 месяцев назад
I used 3mm plywood, 80% power and I cant remember the speed but I think it was like 500mm/min but maybe faster.
