LASER USS Gerald R. Ford Is Ready To Beat Russia | HELIOS
The lead ship of the US Navy fleet, the $13 billion 100,000-ton USS Gerald Ford Supercarrier, is the largest, most expensive, and most lethal aircraft carrier ever built. With the ability to host more than 75 aircraft at a time, the Supercarrier packs more airpower than the air forces of at least 60 different nations. Powered by two Bechtel A1B nuclear reactors, the carrier can sail the world for 25 years without refuelling. Therefore it is able to sail the world multiple times over without having to stop - a ship with truly unlimited range.
On the seas, the carrier is protected by an endless inventory of built-in defenses along with an armada of 10+ cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines. USS Gerald Ford is expected to have 9 sibling carriers just like it, in its class. It is also preceded by the Nimitz class of carriers which are of almost the same size and have similar capabilities - without the USS Gerald Ford in the picture, they would be the largest carriers in the world. With all of these, it’s quite clear that when it comes to aircraft carriers, the US stands out dominantly from the rest.

The question is , can USA Navy defend itself from Russian hypersonic missile Zircon that flies at speeds up to Mach 9 ( 3,1 km/s).I hope we never find out, because in direct confrontation between the USA and China , or Russia, there may not be a real winner. It all comes down to who is willing to sacrifice more, and it is hard to believe that anyone would come ahead .

For all US military technology that is publicly known, there is an exponentially level of technology that isn't publicly shared. I would guess that the real capabilities of the US military are 4 or 5 decades or more advanced than what is publicly known. Some time canceled programs aren't really canceled, they just go black.

@Bass 305 I have great reverence for the Vietnam Vets and are part of the reason I joined up. The way they were treated when they got home was unforgivable, I don't care for hippies to this day. I have a book I recommend to people who honor and respect vets, it's call Fearless: The Adam L. Brown Story. He was a DEVGRU Navy SEAL, aka SEAL Team Six, who before he joined was a crack and heroine addicted. Then what happened to him, as a regular SEAL, before making it to DEVGRU, should have eliminated him much less the crack and heroine. DEVGRU is the top 1% of the 20% who make it through BUDs. It's like comparing peewee football to the NFL. These guys are the Jedi of the special operations community. Read or listen to it if you can. You won't forget it and you'll recommend it too. Tell your dad that I thank him for his sacrifice because what he did and every service member does goes beyond service.

The real testing going on here in the US must be currently focusing especially on satellite use of lasers, because these can threaten the homeland over the horizon either as direct laser weapons or as part of a ground originated laser orbiting signal relay or control system and quickly brought into an attack. Beyond twenty miles or so (which is the line of sight for a light beam) either an attacker has to have attack aircraft capability or satellite capability to say launch a laser attack across the Pacific. Since the enemy satellites could move over the defending nation relatively quickly these maybe should be the first to be targeted by defenders. In such a fight of course, missiles might become absolutely useless and not part of the critical main battle weaponry. Does a nation like Russia have any capability like this? If not, they become really a third world power in military capability and would be prostrate, for instance, in a fight against NATO; this is one of many things that the Russians have foolishly given up, the capability to keep up cutting edge advances in armaments, because of their war in Ukraine and its fallout. Without satellite laser attack capability it may be harder to see how China wouldn't be at a disadvantage in a war involving lasers, say an attack on Taiwan involving the regional and western military alliances. Because absent the use of satellite lasers (or 'space drones'?) and missiles China doesn't have the range to mount an effective conventional attack against the US homeland, for instance, whereas the US is much better positioned in the Western Pacific to bring to bear conventional forces much closer to China, including laser powered aircraft and ships operating at closer effective range to enemy targets. And it can or will be able soon to set up laser defense capabilities for intercontinental ballistic missiles.

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't already have offensive satellites in space. The Star Wars program was "canceled," aka went black, and their were a lot more top secret space shuttle mission than public missions, not to mention rocket launches that didn't stop during the shuttle program. For example, the SR-71 first flew in 1964 and was semi retired in 1989. The public barely knew anything about it in the early 80s. How long was the stealth fighter thought to be a UFO before it was publicly announced?

@@phantom3093the U.S. officially removed itself from space non-proliferation treaty. Space based lasers would be very effective against intercontinental nuclear warheads. They wouldn’t be very effective at damaging land based targets. The atmosphere is very dense and dissipates Solar based light wavelengths. Laser will similarly be attenuated. No that it couldn’t blind sensitive equipment.

He was right ... the use of Electro Magnetic catapults make the Ford a poor platform. Traditional steam powered catapults, are low tech and reliable.. easy to repair at sea with common tools. Suppose a bomb hits a catapult- .. Which will be repaired more quickly? A steam powered catapult or an electro/magnetic catapult? You need to know when to embrace tech and when to reject it.
