Thanks to the incredible generosity of Jason Koestner this is the most amazing Laserdisc Collection update I've ever done. He sent me not just one or two titles but two entire boxes of some of my ultimate wishlist titles including DTS discs, Japanese Star Wars variants but to my TOTAL amazement he sent my Laserdisc collecting grail. The disc I've wanted to get ever since discovering the format many years ago: The Japanese exclusive late release THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. I'm still speechless.

The Indiana Jones Japanese box set is beautiful. The original theatrical Star Wars trilogy is a good watch. I have seen the Special Editions many times through out the years. I do enoy the original theatrical trilogy though. Very cool to see the Japanese Laserdisc box set of Star Wars Original Trilogy.

Does this mean that you just got yourself a copy of the most elusive, and highly expensive LD for The World is not Enough? So happy for you, man. Now you have the entire run of the James Bond movies on LD.

Fantastic Pick-up Vid Spencer, some fine discs in there, reminded me I need to get that Indy Japanese Boxset & the Japanese SW Definitive set for those “making of” discs. That version of the Definitive set is not all that common actually! Congrats on The World is not Enough! I feel your pain there, I’ve bidded and missed out often on that one! Cheers, Rod

In my opinion I think my preferred way to watch Star Wars on Laserdisc unaltered would be the Japanese Special Collection laserdiscs, If I can try to find them, and the THX Remastered editions. I want to get the Technidisc edition of A New Hope but that one is way too expensive very rare to find so my best option would be the Special Collection laserdiscs from Japan.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Месяц назад
If you get the standard Fox special widescreen editions they use the same masters as the JSC and are rather close in quality for a fraction of the price. Just avoid the first pressing of Star Wars to avoid the shrinking ratio.

They're soo tempting and amazing in terms of LD quality but the pricetag is really daunting. Hopefully you get one of the Japan late releases someday. The sad part: Especially when most are available on common DVDs for less than a dollar that usually are the same or a similar video master...with one of those you can pretend its a rare LD. ;) That's what I used to do on TWINE.

I finally watched my copy of Ronin based on your recommendation. Certainly, good performances and stellar chase sequences. But the overall plot seemed like a standard, pointless McGuffin chase. DeNiro's character is apparently in deep cover, I take it the title is ironic.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Год назад
I can understand where you're coming from and I've encountered that sort of response before. I would say that over time and rewatches the film opens up a bit. The surface plot is rather simple and kept very unrefined. This serves a deeper purpose to convey the deep sort of death infused existence that all the characters of this world exist in. It's the one time I think a film perfectly captures the feeling of a great spy novel and remains a gripping action thriller as well. Other films do amazingly well at being perfect spy thrillers but aren't action films.

Pulp Fiction did have an AC-3 soundtrack in theaters (the Dolby Stereo Digital logo appears on many of the posters). Don’t know about DTS. I assume it’s based on whatever source was used for the AC-3 mix.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 10 месяцев назад
That’s true about the posters. I always went by the criterion laserdisc technical notes about how they made their ac3 from stems and the SR was taken from the printmaster.

Well, that was one of your finest LD collection videos yet. I would also like to get a hold of that second pressing of the Japanese Star Wars Definitive Collection box set especially for the fact that it contains the making ofs for all three films ( the only recent home video release where they've included them is for the Bluray boxset), the audio commentaries ( which are dubbed over in Japanese for the first pressing), and most importantly; they're rot free and not missing any footage. The Japanese Special Edition box set also looks rather nice ( identical to the UK PAL box set but for the fact that those discs slide out instead of being boxed inside and the flap of the front cover held by a piece of velcro). It edges out the US box set in that the UK, Japanese and French box sets ( the French one is in English with hard coded French subtitles), use the Drew Struzan artwork for each individual sleeve. The German box set looks more like the US box set in design, and with an identical booklet, albeit in German. The German box set also has a striking golden cover instead of the metallic one used in all the other SE box sets, which happens to be the same design as the one used for the UK VHS Widescreen box set. As for Star Wars box set variants, I happen to own the French box set for the original trilogy with the alternate European artwork you seem to like so much. Again, English with hard coded French subtitles. And yes, the artwork for those releases looks great on an LD cover. As for the rest of the discs Kostner sent you, they are the stuff of wishlist wet dreams for any serious LD collector. It doesn't get any better than that. And if you're looking to expand into Japanese variant territory, I recommend you check out the box sets for the Back to the Future trilogy and the T2 Special Edition, the latter being as good , if not even better than its US counterpart ( it has a 44-page booklet! ). Identical in every way, with the same extra content, with the only drawback being that the Audiocommentary is dubbed over in Japanese. When you started popping out those DTS LDs, I thought you were going to end up showing us some crazy special disc like the X-Men, or M-I 2 ones. I've seen those for sale on eBay ( the X-Men one on an auction not two weeks ago with a starting price of 1 €), and they go for crazy amounts. Finally, a very good video as always, Spencer, and I'm really happy that you finally got your Holy Grail. Your work on this channel makes us all LD, and physical media collectors alike, very proud. Keep up the good work. And congratulations once again.

16:43 Where did you learn that Jackie Brown was Tarantino’s first discrete mix? I feel like once ac3 and dts 5.1 came out, it became harder to figure out what mixes a film originally had since it was no longer as simple as finding out whether or not it had a 70mm blow up, and if those prints had a six track mix. The credits aren’t always accurate, and forums can rarely come to a consensus on these things, so I never know where to look for definitive proof.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 10 месяцев назад
It was later in the decade once discrete became fully accepted. Also his first two productions were lower budgets and if you look at both of them closely in terms of credits, release era and release materials they were matrix stereo only. Pulp Fiction got 5.1 later on video when they did a home 5.1 upmix on Laserdisc. The Usual Suspects was similar in that it was lower budgeted matrix stereo theatrically with a 5.1 upmix done for video. It’s hard to find this stuff out. I can’t tell for sure until I see some kind of official reference or credit-best of all is seeing a film print example to see what tracks it carries firsthand. But a good rule of thumb is for any lower budgeted film in the early 90’s it’s likely matrix stereo or even flat stereo only.
@wright96d
@wright96d 10 месяцев назад
@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Just looked at the credits for Pulp Fiction and it seems to have been a discrete 5.1 mix. It lists Dolby Stereo Digital, which as far as I know was the early name for Dolby Digital. I compared the LD 2.0 to the BD and the 2.0 has better dynamic range, but unfortunately I don't have any of the LD or DVD 5.1 tracks to compare against.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 10 месяцев назад
@@wright96d I hadn’t noticed the mention on the poster before. I always went by Criterions information on their laserdisc, which talked about their 5.1 mix having to come from original stems. They took the Dolby SR from the printmaster directly. It’s possible it could’ve gotten 5.1 theatrically in certain theaters but like a lot of early home video 5.1 transfers they did them straight from stems and not the theatrical version for various reasons. Unfortunately the early days 5.1 are so murky in terms of available information you pretty much have to wait and see until you can find something out on each title.
@wright96d
@wright96d 10 месяцев назад
@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader If you ever have the time, I would certainly be interested in hearing your thoughts on the LD 5.1 mix(es). The gun shots during the scene with Jackson’s “bible verse” are crazy loud on the 2.0 mix, but rather compressed on the BD 5.1.

Is Star Trek Insurrection worth owning on Laserdisc. Cheapest one i could find was the non bilingual Japanese issue. Some seller on Ebay had it for 60 bucks. I also can't find anyone who had reviewed the picture quality so its a blind buy. Love the Last Crusade Gatefold. I have the Letterbox i don't have the full frame. and i don't have either of the evergreen reissues. For Bond what i want is OHMSS, i haven't been able to find a Japan copy of any of those. And for some reason the US release is overly priced as well. Rarely shows up.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Год назад
If you can ever find a cheap Insurrection I’ll bet it’ll be a very good looking disc but I wouldn’t pay the crazy prices it goes for. The initial dvd likely uses the same transfer. The Japanese Bonds usually appear in batches with random titles.
