Paul buys Ruth a new hat as a gift knowing that she had already tried on but didn't buy because she thought it was too expensive. He hides the gift in the barn showing the hiding place to Lassie who reveals it to Ruth. When Timmy and Lassie inadvertently ruin the hat while playing, Ruth salvages it by using the pieces of her old hat, hoping that Paul won't notice.
