CLIP DESCRIPTION:
While Jack (Arnold Schwarzenegger) humors Danny (Austin O'Brien) with his drug dealer theory, the two meet Benedict (Charles Dance).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Arnold Schwarzenegger appears as a pumped-up Shakespearian hero while an announcer bellows, "Something is rotten in Denmark -- and Hamlet is taking out the trash!" This gag sets the stage for the post-modernist action epic The Last Action Hero. The film concerns Danny Madigan (Austin O'Brien), a lonely eleven-year-old boy who escapes from his bleak New York City reality by glorying in the action adventure movies of his favorite film character, Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Danny's friend is an elderly movie projectionist, Nick (Robert Prosky), who lets Danny into the shabby Times Square movie theater where he works so Danny can see Slater's new movie. He hands Danny a magic ticket given to him years ago by Houdini, and when Nick rips the ticket and gives Danny the stub, Danny finds himself catapulted from the theater into the back seat of Slater's speeding sports car in "Jack Slater IV." Danny becomes Slater's helper as Jack battles a trio of nefarious bad guys --Benedict (Charles Dance), Vivaldi (Anthony Quinn) and The Ripper (Tom Noonan). But things get out of hand when Benedict steals Danny's magic ticket stub and transports himself into Danny's reality. Benedict and The Ripper proceed to wreak havoc along Broadway, forcing Slater to cross into reality to get the villains and, in the process, learn about blood and pain.

It didn't do well at the box office since it was released the week after Jurassic Park and I reckon that made people think it wasn't any good. I have the feeling people think it's just another typical action film and was probably marketed that way, when it's kind of a deconstruction/reconstruction of one. I absolutely adore it's self-awareness and self-parody but I can see how some people might be put off by it.

This movie is way smarter and more brilliant than people realized at the time of its release. "Could I speak to the drug dealer of the house please?" This line alone is a testament to that. Movie opened on a same weekend as Jurassic Park. Some movies go to obscure for years because they happened to have same release date as some other movie. Like Star Wars and Smokey And The Bandit. Swarzenegger wanted that movie would be released like a month after Jurassic Park, but studio guys rejected that. Also people expected new Arnie action movie from director of Die Hard and Predator (as it was marketed) and mostly got some kid named Danny Madigan

It blew my mind and Arnie was so cool in it and it was funny and awesome and action packed with lots of charm. And Danny was so relatable as a character because we all wanted to be that kid who was Jack/Arnie's sidekick. This movie is goofy as hell and over the top but it's all part of the charm. This film needs a sequel now, to address the current state of action movies... it would be absolutely perfect. Plus, THE WORLD NEEDS MORE ARNIE MOVIES!!!!!

I think Charles Dance is a time traveler. Even in 1994, he knew that he would be playing Tywin Lannister one day. Or he is just a terrific actor, or maybe both lol.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but this is the most underrated movie of all time. It's a fictional movie inside a fictional movie about a fictional movie character involving both the fictional movie character and the real-live actor who portrayed him AND his real self. Best line? The Grim Reaper. "I was only curious; he's not on any of my lists."

A movie based off satire of a parody which breaks the 4th wall inside itself. Gotta love the 90's.

I used to rent this on video from my local Cornershop so often I must’ve paid for it 10 times over. Eventually my parents bought it for me and I must’ve watched that film 100 times! It is such a great film that I still enjoy today. The sock draw bit is my favourite Arnie one-liner.
