Visiting the slowly-but-surely decaying Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, NY on an unseasonably warm day in March of 2022.
I was here a lot growing up, but it's emptied out in recent years, and redevelopment plans for the land are on the horizon. So I drove out to Long Island and took the opportunity to experience this fallen retail oasis in suburbia one last time.

Sad to see this mall close- it holds fun memories from long ago. Going to the movies with my friends, or just shopping, hanging out at the food court. I was very surprised they took the theater out.

I grew up in Levittown 1973-1988, and I lived at Mid Island Plaza for years, that was THE mall and it was only a 10 min. bike ride away or bus ride. And Roosevelt Field was the second major mall destination. I came to Sunrise on rare occasion over the years, back then mainly to meet up with friends who lived more on the south shore, or to hit up the movie theater. I didn't do much actual shopping there, honestly Roosevelt Field blew Sunrise away in terms of its having three bookstores, two record stores, back then, and other attractions. Later Field had a good Houlihan's or whatever and the food was good there. (in the 80s). I saw some movies in the early 90s at Sunrise and that was about the last time I ever bothered until six years ago when I was there and I could see already that tons of stores had closed, major anchors, and one small clothing vendor told me he was once also at the long dead Busy Bee Flea Market across the street, but that had shut down years ago, and that he was going to shut down soon because the mall had raised rents and stopped renewing leases, and that was the beginning of the End. The irony is that most other malls minus The Source on LI are doing ok right now: but Roosevelt Field, which should still be a major destination, has been a target for shootings, thefts, carjackings, gang fights, etc., and it's not a safe place to shop any longer. It's become a crap ghetto mall and this angers me more than anything. No security, and the cops just sit there with their fingers up their arses apparently helpless, or unwilling, to stop the violence and crime. This is how most of LI has become. It's not a good sign. Broadway Mall isn't a target for crime yet, but it's also showing signs of starting to die, a lot of smaller vendors are right now going out of business as we saw first hand about four months ago when my cousin who grew up in Levittown as well, came up and the bunch of us toured Broadway Mall. Meanwhile Tanger outlets (both) do great. ??? Though even those places have had crime and attacks there lately. Whereas I could walk to Mid Island Plaza or shop at R. Field in the 70s and 80s and never ever, worry about crime or being attacked or shot. Would ride our bikes to Nassau Mall in 1980 and never worry about a single thing.

That’s wild! I’ll definitely check out your videos! I sat on this one for a while, but I’m surprised the decline is happening so quickly

Thanks for video. I used to work there in Sunrise mall (aka Massapequa mall), at United Arists movie theatre, 1978 to 1979. Was there earlier in 2022 to videotape and take photos but battery ran out (went dead), so on New Years Eve, Saturday, December 31, 2022, my mother and I walked around Sunrise mall for hour or so, taking video (in 2d and in 3d) and taking photos (with iphone and with 3d camera in 3d and in 2d). As I saw videos on youtube, stating "mall closing end of year (2022), BUT black security guard told us that the mall IS NOT CLOSING. Heard mall will go through another phrase to reopen with stores. I took elevator down from top floor to bottom floor. Some people were still walking around, but not as many. I used to go to this mall A LOT! In 1976, saw 104 different movies; in 1977, saw 110 different movies, and in 1978, saw 147 different movies. (Maybe thats why I need glasses! LOL). Thank you for this video, and I thank others, for their videos. Memories, nostalgia. Happy New Year!

Why redevelop rather than work to restore the mall to former glory?

May I ask... What are the background music/songs in this video? They sound interesting...

Yeah sure, I used a few songs from an artist named "Sam Barsh" on Soundstripe. All their songs have a similar aesthetic

I’m not sure. I’ve heard that some of the stores with outside entrances were staying open but I don’t know exactly which

I went twice the past week and oh it's dead now. Minus four stores or so, Macy's, Backstage, Home Goods, the gym, and Dave and Busters. Dental clinic is also now gone, they moved to Copiague. The only reason I went down was to go to Macy's Backstage, since Furby B. said it was still open, and it was worth going there for some good clothing deals. I took some pics yesterday and omg it's a Dead Mall. Amazingly Macy's (both) seem to be making money, and getting shoppers in there. Home Goods too. I guess if not for the holidays, they'd have shuttered all of this stuff by now. No food court left, either. You cannot even find a soda machine in here.
